Observation of dark dot splitting pattern in terbium gallium garnet

We have observed a new polarisation pattern in terbium gallium garnet which is both laser excited and mechanically stressed. The pattern can be characterized by a splitting from a “one dot” structure to a “two dots” structure. We have found that the new pattern is very sensitive to the orientation and the strength of the external forces applied to the sample. Thanks to this sensitivity and to the image simplicity, this new effect may be used in a vectorial force sensor and actuator.

Recent Advances in Static Output-Feedback Controller Design with Applications to Vibration Control of Large Structures

Static output-feedback controller design for vehicle suspensions: an effective two-step computational approach

In this study, a novel two-step methodology is applied in designing static output-feedback controllers for a class of vehicle suspension systems. Following this approach, an effective synthesis of static output-feedback controllers can be carried out by solving two consecutive linear matrix inequality optimisation problems. Static output-feedback control for vehicle suspensions: a single-step linear matrix inequality approach

In this paper, a new strategy to design static output-feedback controllers for a class of vehicle suspension systems is presented. A theoretical background on recent advances in output-feedback control is first provided, which makes possible an effective synthesis of static output-feedback controllers by solving a single linear matrix inequality optimization problem. Preparation methods to optimize the performance of sensor discs for fast chemiluminescence ozone analyzers.

Fast ozone (O(3)) measurements (1-50 Hz) in the atmosphere are required for airborne studies and for the measurement of ground-based O(3) fluxes by the eddy covariance technique. Fast response analyzers, based on heterogeneous chemiluminescence, need dye coated sensor discs on which the chemiluminescence is generated. In this study, we present three new preparation methods for those sensor discs. Physically-based radiative transfer models (RTMs) help understand the interactions of radiation with vegetation and atmosphere. However, advanced RTMs can be computationally burdensome, which makes them impractical in many real applications, especially when many state conditions and model couplings need to be studied. An Automatic Differentiation Based Approach to the Level Set Method

This paper discusses an implementation of the parametric level set method. Adjoint approach is used to perform the sensitivity analysis, but contrary to standard implementations, the state problem is differentiated in its discretized form. The required partial derivatives are computed using tools of automatic differentiation, which avoids the need to derive the adjoint problem from the governing partial differential equation. The augmented Lagrangian approach is used to enforce volume constraints, and a gradient based optimization method is used to solve the subproblems.
