Sensitivity in topic development and meaning making in a process consultation contract meeting

2013

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the discursive practices used when the agenda for a consultation process was negotiated in a contract meeting. The paper illustrates the role of sensitivity in meaning making practices, that is, how displays of sensitivity were intertwined with topic development.Design/methodology/approachThe paper offers an in‐depth analysis of naturally occurring conversation in a meeting between a consultant and two client managers. The audio‐recorded data is analyzed by utilizing methodology introduced and developed in the traditions of Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (CA).FindingsThe authors show how both the consultant and the clients displayed…

A practical protocol for calibration of nutrient removal wastewater treatment models

2011

Activated sludge models can be very useful for designing and managing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, as with every model, they need to be calibrated for correct and reliable application. Activated sludge model calibration is still a crucial point that needs appropriate guidance. Indeed, although calibration protocols have been developed, the model calibration still represents the main bottleneck to modelling. This paper presents a procedure for the calibration of an activated sludge model based on a comprehensive sensitivity analysis and a novel step-wise Monte Carlo-based calibration of the subset of influential parameters. In the proposed procedure the complex calibration i…

Parameter Sensitivity and the Quality of Model Predictions

1994

Using SIM-PEL, a comprehensive model for the pelagic compartment of lake ecosystems, we analyse synergistic toxicant effects in lake ecosystems. We show, that — even for a rather simple model — model predictions may be strongly dependent on the time horizon of the prediction and on the quality of input parameters. For longer time spans, small errors in parameter estimation may lead to qualitatively wrong prediction of toxicant effects. Monte Carlo simulations allow to take errors in parameter estimation into account, but they need rather good estimates of parameter variance.

Optimization of fluorescence enhancement for silicon-based microarrays

2008

An optical technique for the enhancement of fluorescence detection sensitivity on planar samples is presented. Such a technique is based on the simultaneous optimization of excitation and light collection by properly combining interference and reflectance from the sample holder. Comparative tests have been performed in microarray applications, by evaluating the proposed solution against commercial glass-based devices, using popular labeling dyes, such as Cy3 and Cy5. The proposed technique is implemented on a substrate built with standard silicon technology and is therefore well suited for integrated micro total analysis systems (microTAS) applications.

A topological substructural approach for the prediction of P-glycoprotein substrates

2006

A topological substructural molecular design approach (TOPS-MODE) has been used to predict whether a given compound is a P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrate or not. A linear discriminant model was developed to classify a data set of 163 compounds as substrates or nonsubstrates (91 substrates and 72 nonsubstrates). The final model fit the data with sensitivity of 82.42% and specificity of 79.17%, for a final accuracy of 80.98%. The model was validated through the use of an external validation set (40 compounds, 22 substrates and 18 nonsubstrates) with a 77.50% of prediction accuracy; fivefold full cross-validation (removing 40 compounds in each cycle, 80.50% of good prediction) and the predictio…

Spatial Search by Continuous-Time Quantum Walk with Multiple Marked Vertices

2015

In the typical spatial search problems solved by continuous-time quantum walk, changing the location of the marked vertices does not alter the search problem. In this paper, we consider search when this is no longer true. In particular, we analytically solve search on the "simplex of $K_M$ complete graphs" with all configurations of two marked vertices, two configurations of $M+1$ marked vertices, and two configurations of $2(M+1)$ marked vertices, showing that the location of the marked vertices can dramatically influence the required jumping rate of the quantum walk, such that using the wrong configuration's value can cause the search to fail. This sensitivity to the jumping rate is an is…

The decay

2010

In this paper the potential for the discovery of new physics in the exclusive decay B ¯ d → K ¯ ⁎ 0 μ + μ − is discussed. Attention is paid to constructing observables which are protected from uncertainties in QCD form factors and at the same time observe the symmetries of the angular distribution. We discuss the sensitivity to new physics in the observables including the effect of CP-violating phases.

Reconciling high-transverse-momentum dimuon production with quantum chromodynamics

1979

It is shown that by taking into account nuclear effects in a phenomenological model-independent way, the recent Fermilab data for of muon pairs may be reduced to values compatible with quantum-chromodynamics predictions. The sensitivity of this reduction to uncertainties in the assumed nuclear dependence are discussed.

Hilbert–Schmidt speed as an efficient figure of merit for quantum estimation of phase encoded into the initial state of open n-qubit systems

2021

AbstractHilbert–Schmidt speed (HSS) is a special type of quantum statistical speed which is easily computable, since it does not require diagonalization of the system state. We find that, when both HSS and quantum Fisher information (QFI) are calculated with respect to the phase parameter encoded into the initial state of an n-qubit register, the zeros of the HSS dynamics are actually equal to those of the QFI dynamics. Moreover, the signs of the time-derivatives of both HSS and QFI exactly coincide. These findings, obtained via a thorough investigation of several paradigmatic open quantum systems, show that HSS and QFI exhibit the same qualitative time evolution. Therefore, HSS reveals its…
