Association between toenail scandium levels and risk of acute myocardial infarction in European men: the EURAMIC and Heavy Metals Study

The association between scandium status and risk of acute myocardial infarction (MI) was examined in a multicentre case control study in 10 centres from Europe and Israel. Scandium in toenails was assessed in 684 cases and 724 controls less than 70 years of age. Mean concentrations of toenail scandium were 6.74 micro/kg in cases and 7.75 microg/kg in controls. Scandium among controls, adjusted for age and centre was positively associated with concentrations of lycopene and oleic acid in adipose tissue (P = 0.002 for both nutrients). Previous studies have shown that students have difficulties building the macro-structure from expository texts in English (as L2). The usual cause pointed out is a lack of language proficiency. Thus, instructional methods have focused on providing students with the necessary vocabulary and grammar knowledge. This study proposes and validates an instructional approach which improves students’ L2 processing on the macro-structural level, focusing on reading strategies rather than on vocabulary or grammar. Metrics for evaluating modularity and extensibility in HMAS systems

Nowadays, software systems are more and more frequently designed in order to realize complex dynamical behavior for solving complicated problems. Holonic Multi Agent Systems (HMAS) is spreading for the development of such systems since they allow to manage system requirements in terms of behaviors and organizational patterns. Traditional software engineering metrics are not useful for measuring HMAS ar- chitectures since they do not consider different nested levels of organizational structures. We want to contribute to this issue proposing some metrics for evaluating modularity and extensibility of HMAS architectures.
