Collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) have been studied extensively during the past few years. In this paper, the concept of virtual reality (VR), and its value for group work are critically examined. To ground the discussions, experiences from a virtual reality project, from 3D chats, and from present CVE applications are analysed in the light of human communication. Abstract Technical developments in electronic communication and computing coupled with new understanding of relationships between computers and work processes has given impetus to a significant amount of research in the area of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Much of this work, however, lacks strong theoretical foundations, and there is no clear definition of CSCW, the major research questions of the field, or appropriate strategies for research. Common artefacts have been identified as fundamental characteristics for framing activities in workplaces. Mike Robinson's article 'Design for unanticipated use...' conceptualised and defined the dimensions of common artefacts as consisting of predictability, peripheral awareness, implicit communication, double level language and overview. These dimensions have often been used in explaining unexpected uses of different applications and systems. In this paper we present the SAMPO-approach for modelling and analyzing office information systems. We emphasize the collective features of office work and the role of communications in coordinating the collective efforts. The approach is based on the language action view where language is seen as a means of doing things. The approach also accepts the fact that collective work includes both harmony and conflict and tries to capture both of these features.

Training new electronics engineers presents several major challenges. This paper proposes a new approach for practical lessons in second-level analog electronics, where students get a closer view of real-world practices in electronic engineering. The authors describe and evaluate a more dynamic way of teaching practical lessons in analog electronics in the first year of an electronic engineering degree. The method consists of creating a virtual company that contracts students to develop prototypes. Analizar las estrategias y las actividades creativas que el profesorado de música realiza en sus aulas mediante un software construido por las personas investigadoras que facilita la creación sonora colaborativa en contextos docentes. Método. El trabajo se ha realizado mediante un enfoque exploratorio-descriptivo a través de una experiencia didáctica desarrollada durante 12 semanas en aula y después se encuestó a 27 docentes de educación primaria y secundaria.
