Kinetically Controlled Sequential Growth of Surface-Grafted Chiral Supramolecular Copolymers.

We report a facile strategy to grow supramolecular copolymers on Au surfaces by successively exposing a surface-anchored monomer to solutions of oppositely charged peptide comonomers. Charge regulation on the active chain end of the polymer sufficiently slows down the kinetics of the self-assembly process to produce kinetically trapped copolymers at near-neutral pH. Sacrificial Synthesis of Hydroxy-Telechelic Metathesis Polymers via Multiblock-Copolymers

The synthesis of well-defined telechelic ring-opening metathesis polymers has been achieved by Sacrificial Synthesis. With the formation of cleavable triblock-copolymers, precise control over the molecular weight and the degree of functionalization was achieved. Introducing cleavable monomers that can be addressed separately, sequential deprotection was accomplished which opened the path to more sophisticated polymeric materials bearing different substituents at their respective chain ends. Sacrificial penta- and heptablock-copolymers are also presented which allow the synthesis of well-defined telechelic polymers in good yields and significantly improved initiator efficiency.

Interfacial tension of demixed polymer solutions: augmentation by polymer additives

The interfacial tension between phase separated polymer solutions increases pronouncedly upon the addition of asmall amounts of incompatible polymers. This feature is demonstrated by means of measurements with solutions of polystyrene in cyclohexane and the folloowing additives: poly(styrene-block-dimethylsiloxane), polyisobutylene and polydimethylsiloxane. Theoretical considerations based on a correlation between the lenth of the tie lines and the corresponding interfacial tension corroborates this finding

Synthesis and characterization of polymeric derivatives of the folic acid antagonist, Methotrexate, N-[4-(N-methyl-2,4-diamino-6-pteridinylmethylamino)benzoyl] glutamic acid (1a), a widely used antitumor agent, are described. Surface and bulk ordering in thin films of a symmetrical diblock copolymer

Amphiphilic diblock copolymers have the ability to adapt their surface's molecular composition to the hydrophilicity of their environment. In the case of about equal volume fractions of the two polymer blocks, the bulk of these polymers is known to develop a laminar ordering. We report here our investigation of the relationship between bulk ordering and surface morphology/chemical composition in thin films of such an amphiphilic diblock copolymer. Precise structural investigation of symmetric diblock copolymer thin films with resonant soft X-ray reflectivity

Symmetric diblock copolymers are known to form lamellar structures in the bulk of an organic thin film. Polymer/polymer and polymer/substrate interfaces play a critical role in this application. Here, we report the investigation of multiple buried interfaces by using a novel technique resonant soft X-ray reflectivity which benefits from enhanced contrast between different polymers near the carbon K-edge. This allows us to obtain a precise interface structure. We also present an alternative method to determine optical constants of polymers by fitting X-ray reflectivity of polymers with known structural parameters at specific soft X-ray energies. pH-sensitive hydrogel based on a polyaspartamide derivative

A pH-sensitive hydrogel was prepared by UV irradiation technique. Starting polymer was obtained from alpha,beta-poly (N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) partially derivatized with glycidyl methacrylate (PHG). The PHG copolymer was cross-linked by UV irradiation in the presence of methacrylic acid (MA) to form a pH sensitive hydrogel. The cross-linked matrix shaped as microparticles was characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometry, XPS, X-ray diffraction, SEM and particle size distribution analyses.
