An on-line mass separator for fission-produced alkali isotopes

Abstract The design of an on-line mass separator installed at the TRIGA reactor in Mainz is described and its performance discussed. A tungsten oven, filled with about 2 g of 235U embedded in graphite, is exposed to a flux of 1.7 × 1011 thermal neutrons (s− cm−2) near the reactor core. After diffusion out of the graphite the fission-produced alkali isotopes are surface-ionized and electromagnetically mass-separated, the resolving power being about 750. Losses during the diffusion out of the target material are discussed. Due to these losses the maximum separator efficiency is about 5%, corresponding to a source strength of about 109 particles s−1 for the most abundant isotopes. The heaviest…

The determination of the magnetic properties of molecular magnets in environments similar to those used in spintronic devices is fundamental for the development of applications. Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecular cluster systems that display magnetic hysteresis of dynamical origin at low temperature. As they behave like perfectly monodisperse nanomagnets and show clear macroscopic quantum effects in their magnetic properties, they are extremely appealing candidates for the forthcoming generation of molecular devices: they have been proposed as efficient systems for quantum computation, ultra-high-density magnetic recording media, and molecular spintronic systems. Core–shell microgels are crosslinked nanosized spherical particles with a chemical composition that is different on the surface compared to the core region. By employing a core with special optical properties, e.g., a core labeled either with organic dye molecules or noble metal clusters (see Figure), these particles are perfectly suited as optical tracers in diffusion measurements. Here, the shell may be important for several reasons: (i) as a protective coating to suppress any influence of the labels on particle mobility, (ii) to optically separate individual particles even at high concentrations, and (iii) to compatibilize the particles with e.g., polymeric chains. In asymmetric ABC triblock copolymers with C being the matrix-forming majority component, the formation of cylindrical morphologies is governed by the sum of the volume fractions of the components A and B (Φ A + Φ B ) as well as by their ratio (Φ B /Φ A ). The paper describes the morphologies of various polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (SBM) and polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymers (SEBM) in dependence on these parameters. Plasmonic Core–Satellite Assemblies as Highly Sensitive Refractive Index Sensors

Highly sensitive and spectrally tunable plasmonic nanostructures are of great demand for applications such as SERS and parallel biosensing. However, there is a lack of such nanostructures for the midvisible spectral regions as most available chemically stable nanostructures offer high sensitivity in the red to far red spectrum. In this work, we report the assembly of highly sensitive nanoparticle structures using a hydroxylamine mediated core–satellite assembly of 20 nm gold nanoparticle satellites onto 60 nm spherical gold cores. The structural properties of GaN/AlN core-shell nanocolumn heterostructures.

International audience; The growth and structural properties of GaN/AlN core-shell nanowire heterostructures have been studied using a combination of resonant x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy experiments. For a GaN core of 20 nm diameter on average surrounded by a homogeneous AlN shell, the built-in strain in GaN is found to agree with theoretical calculations performed using a valence force field model. It is then concluded that for an AlN thickness up to at least 12 nm both core and shell are in elastic equilibrium.
