SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM AND BLOOD-PRESSURE CONTROL IN ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSION

1978

Abstract In normotensive subjects an inverse correlation was observed between an index of sympathetic nervous activity (the plasma-noradrenaline concentration during physical exercise) and reactivity to exogenous noradrenaline. This relationship was invariably disturbed in age-matched patients with essential hypertension. Multiple-regression analysis revealed a highly significant correlation between the combination of both factors and the height of mean arterial blood-pressure ( r =0·91). The findings suggest that sympathetic nervous activity and pressor response to noradrenaline together form an important determinant of the arterial blood-pressure level. An inverse relationship could be de…

Somatostatin-receptor scintigraphy in Graves' disease: reproducibility and variance of orbital activity.

2000

Somatostatin-receptor (SSTR) scintigraphy using the single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) technique allows the assessment of orbital inflammation in patients with Graves' disease. Previous studies showed differences in orbital octreotide uptake already 4 hr after injection. In this study, analysis of inter-/intra-observer variance and reproducibility in the evaluation of orbital SPECT images was performed. First, SPECT data of one representative female patient with clinically active Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO), obtained 4 hr after intravenous injection of 110 MBq 111In-pentetreotide and processed by filtered backprojection, were analyzed. Transverse SPECT images were reconstruc…

The impact of maternal emotional intelligence and parenting style on child anxiety and behavior in the dental setting

2012

Objective. The present study investigated the correlations between maternal emotional intelligence (EQ), parenting style, child trait anxiety and child behavior in the dental setting. Study design. One-hundred seventeen children, aged 4-6 years old (mean 5.24 years), and their mothers participated in the study. The BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory and Bumrinds parenting style questionnaire were used to quantify maternal emotional intelligence and parenting style. Childrens anxiety and behavior was evaluated using the Spence Childrens Anxiety Scale (SCAS) and Frankl behavior scale. Results. Significant correlation was found between maternal EQ and child behavior (r=0.330; p<0.01); but n…

Intrasubject repeatability of corneal power, thickness, and wavefront aberrations with a new version of a dual rotating Scheimpflug–Placido system

2014

Purpose To determine the intrasubject repeatability of a recently introduced dual-camera rotating Scheimpflug–Placido imaging system (Galilei G4) in determining corneal thickness, power, and wavefront aberrations in young healthy subjects. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Prospective evaluation of diagnostic technology. Methods The study comprised right eyes of 25 subjects aged 20 to 40 years with a spherical equivalent ranging from −4.25 to +1.00 diopters. The central corneal thickness, thinnest point value and location, anterior and posterior surface curvatures, total corneal power, and corneal wavefront aberrations were measured for distance vision using the dual S…

Study between anb angle and Wits appraisal in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)

2013

Objectives: To analyse the ANB and Wits values and to study correlations between those two measurements and other measurements in diagnosing the anteroposterior maxilo-mandibular relationship with CBCT. Study Design: Ninety patients who had previously a CBCT (i-CAT®) as a diagnostic register were selected. A 3D cephalometry was designed using one software package, InVivo5®. This cephalometry included 3 planes of reference, 3 angle measurements and 1 linear measurement. The means and standard deviations of the mean of each measurement were assessed. After that, a Pearson´s correlation coefficient has been performed to analyse the significance of each relationship. Results: When classifying t…

Material and Methods: The study was conducted with 14 subjects with SBC detected on panoramic radiographs. In order to evaluate lesions volumetric dimensions, CBCT images for each patient were captured. Files in Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format were transferred into a medical image processing program (ITK-SNAP 2.4.0) and volume in mm(3) of t…

Development and Validation of the AdT-Physio Scale: A Tool to Assess Adherence and Perception of Physical Therapist Intervention in Patients With Cys…

2019

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to measure patient adherence to physical therapist intervention and to report psychometric properties in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Methods This observational, multicenter, qualitative, and cross-sectional study was divided into 2 phases: development of scale items (content validity) and assessment of psychometric properties (construct validity, reliability, and convergent/discriminant validity). Recruited were 121 patients with CF (aged ≥16 years). Sociodemographic characteristics, lung function testing, Coping with Stress Self-Efficacy, brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced inventory, and the scale of …

Repeatability of whole-cornea measurements using an anterior segment imaging device based on OCT and Placido-disk

2017

Current advances in refractive surgery require high accuracy of corneal measurements. We aim to evaluate the repeatability of topographic measurements using an integrated Placido disk - OCT device.Thirty right eyes of thirty healthy and young subjects were included. The topographic parameters of simulated keratometry, asphericity, minimum pachymetry, white-to-white distance, spherical aberration and corneal elevation were studied. Three measurements were taken by the same observer using the Visante omni device. The coefficient of repeatability (CoR), coefficient of variation (CoV) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated to assess the repeatability. The Bland-Altman grap…

Precision of a commercial hartmann-shack aberrometer: limits of total wavefront laser vision correction.

2012

Purpose To assess the intrasession and intersession precision of higher-order aberrations (HOAs) measured using a commercial Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor (Zywave; Bausch & Lomb) in refractive surgery candidates. Design Prospective, experimental study of a device. Methods To analyze intrasession repeatability, 1 experienced examiner measured 30 healthy eyes 5 times successively. To study intersession reproducibility, the same clinician obtained measurements from another 30 eyes in 2 consecutive sessions at the same time of day 1 week apart. Results For intrasession repeatability, excellent intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were obtained for total ocular aberrations, total HOAs, a…

Neural net classification of REM sleep based on spectral measures as compared to nonlinear measures

2001

In various studies the implementation of nonlinear and nonconventional measures has significantly improved EEG (electroencephalogram) analyses as compared to using conventional parameters alone. A neural network algorithm well approved in our laboratory for the automatic recognition of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was investigated in this regard. Originally based on a broad range of spectral power inputs, we additionally supplied the nonlinear measures of the largest Lyapunov exponent and correlation dimension as well as the nonconventional stochastic measures of spectral entropy and entropy of amplitudes. No improvement in the detection of REM sleep could be achieved by the inclusion of …
