Visible-ultraviolet vibronic emission of silica nanoparticles

2014

We report the study of the visible-ultraviolet emission properties and the structural features of silica nanoparticles prepared through a laboratory sol-gel technique. Atomic force microscopy, Raman and Infrared investigations highlighted the 10 nm size, purity and porosity of the obtained nanoparticles. By using time resolved photoluminescence techniques in air and in a vacuum we were able to single out two contributions in the visible emission: the first, stable in both atmospheres, is a typical fast blue band centered around 2.8 eV; the second, only observed in a vacuum around the 3.0-3.5 eV range, is a vibrational progression with two phonon modes at 1370 cm(-1) and 360 cm(-1). By fully…

Near-field observation of evanescent light wave coupling in subwavelength optical waveguides

2002

International audience; We report the observation, in the range of visible frequencies, of the coupling of light into integrated waveguides of subwavelength cross-sections together with a subwavelength detection at the output, of such guides. Coupling in is produced by controlling the focusing of a laser beam totally reflected at the surface of the sample. Several tens of micrometres long dielectric ridges have been efficiently excited with this technique. The phenomenon is observed in direct space by a Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope which also allows to test the principle of detection in a subwavelength volume.

Addressing and imaging high optical index dielectric ridges in the optical near field

2001

Experimental observation of light coupling between ${\mathrm{TiO}}_{2}$ integrated waveguides of subwavelength cross section and pure three-dimensional evanescent light fields is reported. This near-field optical phenomenon is produced by controlling the location of the focusing of a laser beam totally reflected at the surface of the sample. The phenomenon is observed in direct space with a photon scanning tunneling microscope. Dielectric ridges several tens of micrometers long have been efficiently excited with this technique. Upon excitation, the extremities of the linear dielectric wires display intense light spots localized both inside and around the ridge. For ridge lengths up to $30\e…

Detailed balance analysis of area de-coupled double tandem photovoltaic modules

2015

Published version of an article in the journal: Applied Physics Letters. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4906602 This paper describes how layers of area de-coupled top and bottom cells in photovoltaic tandem modules can increase the efficiency of two-terminal tandem devices. The point of the area de-coupling is to allow the number of top cells to differ from the number of bottom cells. Within each of the layers, the cells can be horizontally series-connected and the layers can then be currentor voltage-matched with each other in a tandem module. Using detailed balance modeling, it is shown that two-terminal tandem modules of this type can achieve the same t…

Coupling of Nanoparticle Dynamics to Polymer Center-of-Mass Motion in Semidilute Polymer Solutions

2017

We investigate the dynamics of nanoparticles in semidilute polymer solutions when the nanoparticles are comparably sized to the polymer coils using explicit- and implicit-solvent simulation methods. The nanoparticle dynamics are subdiffusive on short time scales before transitioning to diffusive motion on long time scales. The long-time diffusivities scale according to theoretical predictions based on full dynamic coupling to the polymer segmental relaxations. In agreement with our recent experiments, however, we observe that the nanoparticle subdiffusive exponents are significantly larger than predicted by the coupling theory over a broad range of polymer concentrations. We attribute this …

Effects of anodizing surface treatment on the mechanical strength of aluminum alloy 5083 to fibre reinforced composites adhesive joints

2021

Abstract In this study, the anodizing process based on the use of tartaric sulfuric acid solution (TSA) was carried out on metal substrate to evaluate for the first time its effect on the adhesion strength and corrosion resistance of aluminium alloy (i.e., AA5083) to fibre (i.e., basalt or glass) reinforced composite adhesive joints for nautical applications. Furthermore, some TSA anodized samples were soaked in a NaOH solution to investigate the influence of this post-immersion step on the joint performances. With the aim to improve the fibre-matrix adhesion in the composite substrate thus further increasing the overall mechanical response of the joint, glass and basalt fibres were treated…

Non-ideal mixing behavior in dibutyl phosphate-propylamine binary liquids: Dielectric and nuclear magnetic resonance investigations

2021

Abstract Owing to the amphiphilic nature of their constituent molecules, binary mixtures of pure liquid surfactants are usually characterized by enhanced nano-segregation and thus can exhibit interesting transport properties and complex macroscopic behavior. In this ambit it was recently shown by Turco Liveri et al. (J. Mol. Liq. 263 (2018) 274–281) at room temperature that mixtures of short aliphatic chains compounds, such as dibutyl phosphate (DBP) and n-propylamine (PA) liquids, due to their ability to allow for phosphate-to-amine proton transfer, display ionic liquid–like behavior with composition-dependent enhanced conductivity, viscosity, and magnetically-induced birefringence. To und…

Coupled hydro-mechanical analysis of compacted bentonite behaviour during hydration

2021

Abstract This study analyses the response of compacted bentonites upon hydration based on a coupled hydro-mechanical elasto-plastic framework. As an alternative to multi-porosity interpretation, the framework was selected based on the experimental evidence of adsorbed water behaviour in bentonites and the volumetric response at saturated states, apparently independent of its initial state. Based on these premises, a water retention model was formulated using an explicit distinction between adsorbed water and free water, enabling the postulation of the water properties and behaviour depending on its state. In order to effectively account for the transition between unsaturated to saturated st…

ELECTRON-PHONON COUPLING IN HEAVILY DOPED SILICON

2001

The coupling constant in electron-phonon interaction is a very important issue in nanoscale applications. We have measured this constant in heavily doped silicon. Electron-phonon interaction is proportional to T6 and the coupling constant is found to be 1.5 × 108 W/K5m³, which is about one tenth of the value in normal metals.

Conductive Fused Porphyrin Tapes on Sensitive Substrates by a Chemical Vapor Deposition Approach.

2019

Abstract Oxidative polymerization of nickel(II) 5,15‐diphenyl porphyrin and nickel(II) 5,15‐bis(di‐3,5‐tert‐butylphenyl) porphyrin by oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) yields multiply fused porphyrin oligomers in thin film form. The oCVD technique enables one‐step formation, deposition, and p‐doping of conjugated poly(porphyrins) coatings without solvents or post‐treatments. The decisive reactions and side reactions during the oCVD process are shown by high‐resolution mass spectrometry. Owing to the highly conjugated structure of the fused tapes, the thin films exhibit an electrical conductivity of 3.6×10−2 S cm−1 and strong absorption in the visible to near‐infrared spectral regio…
