Synthesis of highly functionalized 9,10-phenanthrenequinones by oxidative coupling using MoCl5.

The strong oxidative power of molybdenum pentachloride gives rise to an efficient oxidative C-C bond formation of benzil derivatives to the corresponding 9,10-phenanthrenequinones. A highly complementary method to previous approaches was developed. The required derivatives are accessible in a modular fashion and in excellent yields. By this approach the orchid-derived natural product cypripediquinone A was synthesized for the first time.

Semiconductive and Magnetic One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers of Cu(II) with Modified Nucleobases

Four new copper(II) coordination complexes, obtained by reaction of CuX2 (X = acetate or chloride) with thymine-1-acetic acid and uracil-1-propionic acid as ligands, of formulas [Cu(TAcO)2(H2O)4]·4H2O (1), [Cu(TAcO)2(H2O)2]n (2), [Cu3(TAcO)4(H2O)2(OH)2]n·4H2O (3), and [Cu3(UPrO)2Cl2(OH)2(H2O)2]n (4) (TAcOH = thymine-1-acetic acid, UPrOH = uracil-1-propionic acid) are described. While 1 is a discrete complex, 2-4 are one-dimensional coordination polymers. Complexes 2-4 present dc conductivity values between 10(-6) and 10(-9) S/cm(-1). Protein structure prediction assisted with sparse NMR data in CASP13

CASP13 has investigated the impact of sparse NMR data on the accuracy of protein structure prediction. NOESY and 15 N-1 H residual dipolar coupling data, typical of that obtained for 15 N,13 C-enriched, perdeuterated proteins up to about 40 kDa, were simulated for 11 CASP13 targets ranging in size from 80 to 326 residues. For several targets, two prediction groups generated models that are more accurate than those produced using baseline methods. Real NMR data collected for a de novo designed protein were also provided to predictors, including one data set in which only backbone resonance assignments were available. 3-acetylaltholactone and related styryl-lactones, mitochondrial respiratory chain inhibitors.

A novel furano-pyrone, 3-acetylaltholactone, and two other known styryl-lactones, altholactone and 5-acetoxyisogoniothalamin oxide, have been isolated from Goniothalamus arvensis (Annonaceae) stem bark. We report here the isolation and structural elucidation of these compounds with furane-pyrone and styryl-pyrone skeletons, postulating also for the first time their mechanism of cytotoxicity based on inhibition on mammalian mitochondrial respiratory chain.

Abstract A novel, general, and versatile method of diversification of the P1′ position in phosphinic pseudodipeptides, presumable inhibitors of proteolytic enzymes, was elaborated. The procedure was based on parallel derivatization of the amino group in the suitably protected phosphinate building blocks with appropriate alkyl and aryl halides. This synthetic strategy represents an original approach to phosphinic dipeptide chemistry. Study of the influence of the bridge on the magnetic coupling in cobalt(II) complexes.

Two new cobalt(II) complexes of formula [Co(2)(bta)(H(2)O)(6)](n) x 2nH(2)O (1) and [Co(phda)(H(2)O)](n) x nH(2)O (2) [H(4)bta = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, H(2)phda = 1,4-phenylenediacetic acid] have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 is a one-dimensional compound where the bta(4-) ligand acts as 2-fold connector between the cobalt(II) ions through two carboxylate groups in para-conformation. Quantum Chemical Parametrization and Spectroscopic Characterization of the Frenkel Exciton Hamiltonian for a J-Aggregate Forming Perylene Bisimide Dye

Quantum chemical and quantum dynamical calculations are performed for a bay-substituted perylene bisimide dye up to its hexameric aggregate. The aggregate structure is determined by employing the self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) approach including dispersion corrections. It is characterized by a stabilization via two chains of hydrogen bonds facilitated by amide functionalities. Focusing on the central embedded dimer, the Coulomb coupling for this J-aggregate is determined by means of the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to be -514 cm(-1). Asymmetric Allylation/Pauson-Khand Reaction: A Simple Entry to Polycyclic Amines. Application to the Synthesis of Aminosteroid Analogues

Asymmetric allylation of o-iodoarylsulfinylimines has been achieved in high diastereoselectivities. The thus-obtained o-iodoarylhomoallylic sulfinamides participate in a subsequent Sonogashira coupling followed by a diastereoselective intramolecular Pauson-Khand reaction. In this way, tricyclic amines showing a unique benzo-fused indenyl backbone were obtained. The methodology has been applied to the synthesis of amino steroid analogues.

Molecular Dynamics Computer Simulation of Cooling Rate Effects in a Lennard-Jones Glass

We present the results of a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture. We simulate a quench of the system from a liquid state at high temperatures to a glass state at zero temperature by coupling the system to a heat bath that has a temperature that decreases linearly (with slope -γ) with time. We investigate how the residual density of the system varies as a function of the cooling rate γ and rationalize our results by means of the dependence of the coordination number of the particles on the cooling rate.

Dynamics of a Supercooled Lennard-Jones System: Qualitative and Quantitative Tests of Mode-Coupling Theory

We present the results of a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a supercooled binary Lennard-Jones mixture. By investigating the temperature dependence of the diffusion constant and of the intermediate scattering function, we show that the ideal version of the mode-coupling theory of the glass transition is able to give a good qualitative description of the dynamics of this system. Using the partial structure factors, as determined from the simulation, as input, we solve the mode-coupling equations in the long time limit.
