The role of the European Society of Human Genetics in delivering genomic education

2021

The European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) was founded in 1967 as a professional organisation for members working in genetics in clinical practice, research and education. The Society seeks the integration of scientific research and its implementation into clinical practice and the education of specialists and the public in all areas of medical and human genetics. The Society works to do this through many approaches, including educational sessions at the annual conference; training courses in general and specialist areas of genetics; an online resource of educational materials (EuroGEMS); and a mentorship scheme. The ESHG Education Committee is implementing new approaches to expand the r…

Still, results on the reaction of people with a diagnosis of pathological health anxiety (i.e., hypochondriasis) are scarce. Methods In the present study, we investigated the course of (health) anxiety related to SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 in comparison to (health) anxiety related to other severe diseases (e.g., cancer) in a sample of 12 patients with the diagnosis of pathological health anxiety during the “first wave” of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Context of validation of non-formal and informal learning in Spain: a comprehensive view

2019

The system of validation and accreditation of professional qualifications in Spain is offered as a certification opportunity, especially for vulnerable groups. The procedure is presented as an evaluative proposal that allows some inequalities associated with training and employment to be addressed. In this article we analyse whether this system really fosters social cohesion, considering the political situation that frames the procedure and the educational approach underlying it. The research methodology combines the documentary analysis and interviews with the application of the Delphi method. The most relevant results show that the socio-political context is favourable to competences accr…

Epidemiologische Perspektiven der Migrationsforschung am Beispiel von Krebserkrankungen

2008

Epidemiologic research on migration and health in Germany is increasingly focusing on chronic diseases. Migrant studies can help to identify causes of diseases. They also help to identify health inequalities and can thus contribute to improvements in health care. With regard to cancer, descriptive studies among Turkish migrants and ethnic German immigrants from the Former Soviet Union have shown overall low, but slowly increasing cancer rates as compared to autochthonous Germans. For individual cancer sites such as stomach cancer, migrants appear to experience higher risks than the comparison population. Epidemiologic approaches studying cancer care and services for migrants, as well as ana…

Religijny język ekologiczny encykliki Laudato si' papieża Franciszka

2017

Announced in 2005, the encyclical of Pope Francis: Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home, is a dramatic appeal to change the attitude towards the environment and to take action to save it. The analysis was carried out from the viewpoint of ecolinguistics, and the criterion of the so-called environmental adequacy. At the center of attention was the problem of anthropocentrism, which for ecolinguists is the main “contamination ” of the language and the source of improper relations between man and nature. The encyclical is, however, a text functioning within Christianity, which is particularly blamed for the preservation of anthropocentric vision of the world within the culture. The analysis…

Foundations for Esports Curricula in Higher Education

2021

Esports has generated an industry of increasing economic and cultural importance. In recent years, universities and other higher education institutions have responded to its growth by establishing programmes of study which aim to satisfy the needs of innovators operating in the area. However, there is not yet consensus on what an esports curriculum should include. Despite being a technology-driven sector with ethical and professional dimensions that intersect computing, current ACM and IEEE curricula do not mention esports. Furthermore, existing courses tend to provide teaching and training on a wide variety of topics aside from those traditionally in computer science. These include: live e…

Zeitlicher Ablauf der ACTH-induzierten Stimulierung der Corticosteroidbiosynthese

1969

The time course of ACTH action was studied during incubation of quartered rat adrenals by estimation of corticosterone production and secretion rates. The results suggest a two step action of ACTH during the acute stimulation of corticosteroid biosynthesis: A modest initial stimulation was observed within the first 30 min of exposure to ACTH which was overlapped by a marked secondary stimulation between 30 and 60 min.
