A Topic-Case Driven Methodology for Web Course Design

2008

A topic-case driven methodology for a web course design and realization process is based on software engineering metaphors for capturing the necessary steps in creating web courses by means of a content-based development method. The methodology combines instructional issues to design phases that guide teachers and instructors to design and implement online courses. The methodology has been used by students of computer science, teacher education as well as professional university educators from different educational fields. The results from these experiences have been reported as case studies. In this chapter, the methodology is introduced with the summarized results from three case studies.

Global ELT coursebooks: A comparative study to examine if there has been any shift in proportion of cultural content in a 1st and 4th edition of Engl…

2020

In the context of English as a global language, more and more people are learning it for the purposes of L2 to L2 communication. Criticism of global coursebooks is that they still operate within an ESL, native-speaker model. This article explores the arguments that these textbooks are culturally biased in favour of the target culture. The literature and studies show that publishers have not reacted to the changes that have happened to the international nature of English, nor have they made any amendments to the content of global coursebooks in reaction to criticism. A comparative content analysis was conducted on a first edition of English file (Latham-Koenig and Oxenden 1996) and a fourth …

Oral errors, corrective feedback and learner uptake in an EFL setting

2012

Oppilaiden kielelliset virheet ovat luonnollinen osa luokkahuonediskurssia vieraiden kielten oppitunneilla. Opettaja antaa usein korjaavaa palautetta (corrective feedback) oppilaidensa virheisiin, ja parhaassa tapauksessa palaute auttaa oppilaita oppimaan virheistään. Tutkielma pyrkii kartoittamaan erilaisia opettajien käyttämiä keinoja, kun he antavat korjaavaa palautetta oppilaiden puheessa tekemiin virheisiin. Aineisto koostuu kahdeksasta englannin tunnista (yhtee…

Linguistic Repertoires and Semiotic Resources in Interaction: A Finnish Manager as a Mediator in a Multilingual Meeting

2010

This article examines professional communication in a multilingual meeting in a small company in Finland within ethnographic, sociolinguistic, and discourse analytic frameworks. English is used as a lingua franca by a group of Finnish and Chinese business professionals. The aim is to study how language is used with other semiotic resources to construct meaning in interaction. In particular, with the focus on an individual participant who was the mediator in the meeting, the goal is to analyze participants’ role alignment and interpersonal relationships. The results show that business professionals’ roles are renegotiable in a meeting and by means of language accompanied by embodied actions …

Medical English in Italian University Courses in Sports Sciences: Some Issues in Focus

2014

Over the last few decades, the increasingly rapid progress of medical science and technology, together with the growing importance of English as the language of international communication, has made the study of medical English a crucial segment in the curriculum of medical undergraduates. In Italy, medical topics are studied not only in medical degree courses but also in those of sports sciences. This paper focuses attention on some medical English-related issues in sports sciences degree courses in Italian universities. More precisely, the work is divided into four main parts. The first part raises the terminological question concerning the denomination of the discipline “lingua inglese”/…

William Penn, solicitor of the Quakers, and the interplay between legal and religious language

2008

English law is repeatedly referred to in the works of the Quaker leader William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania and a great advocate of religious tolerance. A literary and linguistic analysis of the works of William Penn, therefore, can give a vivid, interesting picture of the religious debate which characterized the political arena in 17th and 18th century England, especially as far as legal, political and religious discourse and terminology are concerned. The first part of my paper deals with the importance of law for William Penn and among Friends, underlining how such relevance was given expression in 17th century Quaker literature. Secondly, it concentrates on the interplay between l…

Discourse between teacher and student : The effect of teacher s style of communication on learning environment as viewed in literature and the cinema

2009

2017

Multiparametric MRI-based Dosimetric Parameters Best Predict Short-term Time Course of PSA After Iodine 125 Permanent Prostate Implantation for Local…

2012

International audience; D90% and V150% of the entire prostate are recognized as the best dosimetric predictors of outcome after 125 I permanent prostate implantation (PPI). The purpose of this study was 2-fold: 1) to determine the relationship between dose-volume parameters of the Dominant Intraprostatic Lesion (DIL) when compared to the prostate and early biochemical outcome after PPI; 2) to define if dose-volume parameters of the central gland (CG), the peripheral zone (PZ) and the DIL could best predict PSA bounce occurrence. The time course of PSA and mechanisms of bounces still remain unclear after PPI. Patients who had a higher dose in the DIL had a worse PSA level at 1 year which is …
