Observation of Time-Reversal Violation in the B0 Meson System
2012
Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states ($B^0$ or $\bar{B}^0$), and $J/\psi K_S^0$ or $c\bar{c} K_S^0$ final states (referred to as $B_+$ or $B_-$), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow B_-$ and $B_- \rightarrow \bar{B}^0$, as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs produced in $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameter…
Bilinear R-parity violation with flavor symmetry
2012
Bilinear R-parity violation (BRPV) provides the simplest intrinsically supersymmetric neutrino mass generation scheme. While neutrino mixing parameters can be probed in high energy accelerators, they are unfortunately not predicted by the theory. Here we propose a model based on the discrete flavor symmetry Lambda(4) with a single R-parity violating parameter, leading to (i) correct Cabbibo mixing given by the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin formula, and a successful unification-like b-tau mass relation, and (ii) a correlation between the lepton mixing angles theta(13) and theta(23) in agreement with recent neutrino oscillation data, as well as a (nearly) massless neutrino, leading to absence of neutri…
Patterns in words and languages
2004
AbstractA word p, over the alphabet of variables E, is a pattern of a word w over A if there exists a non-erasing morphism h from E∗ to A∗ such that h(p)=w. If we take E=A, given two words u,v∈A∗, we write u⩽v if u is a pattern of v. The restriction of ⩽ to aA∗, where A is the binary alphabet {a,b}, is a partial order relation. We introduce, given a word v, the set P(v) of all words u such that u⩽v. P(v), with the relation ⩽, is a poset and it is called the pattern poset of v. The first part of the paper is devoted to investigate the relationships between the structure of the poset P(v) and the combinatorial properties of the word v. In the last section, for a given language L, we consider …
Concrete thermal energy storage for linear Fresnel collectors: Exploiting the South Mediterranean’s solar potential for agri-food processes
2018
Abstract Italy is celebrated in the world for its agri-food industries while the process of production of pasta is highly energy demanding and requires both electrical and thermal energy simultaneously. Because most of the Italian factories producing pasta are located in the Southern part of the country, the direct use of thermal energy generated from the sun would be particularly profitable. In this study, the authors examine the possibility of generating by a Solar Industrial Process Heating plant the thermal energy required annually by an existing factory that produces durum wheat pasta located in Sicily (Italy). The hypothesized plant scheme consists of an array of Fresnel linear solar …
Can be GPR technique useful for strength characterization of concrete?
2010
The possibility of material characterization through the GPR measurements, taking into account the integration with the ultrasonic technique, has been studied and possible relationships between the permittivity of materials and their bulk density are discussed. We present here two different approaches. The first one describes an attempt to correlate the mechanical strength of concrete (as well the ultrasonic velocity) with the permittivity of the material. A series of samples of concrete, characterized by different material properties, were used for georadar and ultrasonic measures, seeking correlations among experimental data. The second approach illustrates the comparison between GPR and …
Relations among Henstock, McShane and Pettis integrals for multifunctions with compact convex values
2013
Fremlin (Ill J Math 38:471–479, 1994) proved that a Banach space valued function is McShane integrable if and only if it is Henstock and Pettis integrable. In this paper we prove that the result remains valid also in case of multifunctions with compact convex values being subsets of an arbitrary Banach space (see Theorem 3.4). Di Piazza and Musial (Monatsh Math 148:119–126, 2006) proved that if \(X\) is a separable Banach space, then each Henstock integrable multifunction which takes as its values convex compact subsets of \(X\) is a sum of a McShane integrable multifunction and a Henstock integrable function. Here we show that such a decomposition is true also in case of an arbitrary Banac…
A CHARACTERIZATION OF THE WEAK RADON–NIKODÝM PROPERTY BY FINITELY ADDITIVE INTERVAL FUNCTIONS
2009
AbstractA characterization of Banach spaces possessing the weak Radon–Nikodým property is given in terms of finitely additive interval functions. Due to that characterization several Banach space valued set functions that are only finitely additive can be represented as integrals.
Radon-Nikodym derivatives of finitely additive interval measures taking values in a Banach space with basis
2011
Let X be a Banach space with a Schauder basis {en}, and let Φ(I)= ∑n en ∫I fn(t)dt be a finitely additive interval measure on the unit interval [0, 1], where the integrals are taken in the sense of Henstock–Kurzweil. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for Φ to be the indefinite integral of a Henstock–Kurzweil–Pettis (or Henstock, or variational Henstock) integrable function f:[0, 1] → X.
Variational Henstock integrability of Banach space valued functions
2016
We study the integrability of Banach space valued strongly measurable functions defined on $[0,1]$. In the case of functions $f$ given by $\sum \nolimits _{n=1}^{\infty } x_n\chi _{E_n}$, where $x_n $ are points of a Banach space and the sets $E_n$ are Lebesgue measurable and pairwise disjoint subsets of $[0,1]$, there are well known characterizations for Bochner and Pettis integrability of $f$. The function $f$ is Bochner integrable if and only if the series $\sum \nolimits _{n=1}^{\infty }x_n|E_n|$ is absolutely convergent. Unconditional convergence of the series is equivalent to Pettis integrability of $f$. In this paper we give some conditions for variational Henstock integrability of a…
Measurable selectors and set-valued Pettis integral in non-separable Banach spaces
2009
AbstractKuratowski and Ryll-Nardzewski's theorem about the existence of measurable selectors for multi-functions is one of the keystones for the study of set-valued integration; one of the drawbacks of this result is that separability is always required for the range space. In this paper we study Pettis integrability for multi-functions and we obtain a Kuratowski and Ryll-Nardzewski's type selection theorem without the requirement of separability for the range space. Being more precise, we show that any Pettis integrable multi-function F:Ω→cwk(X) defined in a complete finite measure space (Ω,Σ,μ) with values in the family cwk(X) of all non-empty convex weakly compact subsets of a general (n…
