D3 Dihedral Logistic Map of Fractional Order
2021
In this paper, the D3 dihedral logistic map of fractional order is introduced. The map presents a dihedral symmetry D3. It is numerically shown that the construction and interpretation of the bifurcation diagram versus the fractional order requires special attention. The system stability is determined and the problem of hidden attractors is analyzed. Furthermore, analytical and numerical results show that the chaotic attractor of integer order, with D3 symmetries, looses its symmetry in the fractional-order variant.
Shape optimization for Stokes problem with threshold slip boundary conditions
2017
This paper deals with shape optimization of systems governed by the Stokes flow with threshold slip boundary conditions. The stability of solutions to the state problem with respect to a class of domains is studied. For computational purposes the slip term and impermeability condition are handled by a regularization. To get a finite dimensional optimization problem, the optimized part of the boundary is described by B´ezier polynomials. Numerical examples illustrate the computational efficiency. peerReviewed
Local cubic splines on non-uniform grids and real-time computation of wavelet transform
2017
In this paper, local cubic quasi-interpolating splines on non-uniform grids are described. The splines are designed by fast computational algorithms that utilize the relation between splines and cubic interpolation polynomials. These splines provide an efficient tool for real-time signal processing. As an input, the splines use either clean or noised arbitrarily-spaced samples. Formulas for the spline’s extrapolation beyond the sampling interval are established. Sharp estimations of the approximation errors are presented. The capability to adapt the grid to the structure of an object and to have minimal requirements to the operating memory are of great advantages for offline processing of s…
Developing and testing a discrete event simulation model to evaluate budget impacts of diabetes prevention programs
2020
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the most rapidly increasing non-communicable diseases worldwide. Lifestyle interventions are effective in preventing T2D but also resource intensive. This study evaluated with discrete event simulation (DES) the relative budget impacts of three hypothetical diabetes prevention programs (DPP), including group-based contact intervention, digital program with human coaching and fully automated program. The data for simulation were derived from research literature and national health and population statistics. The model was constructed using the iGrafx Process for Six Sigma software and simulations were carried out for 10 years. All simulated interventions produc…

Failure Load and Collapse Mode of an RC Beam in a Large Collapsed Roof
2021
The present work focused on the determination of the collapse load and of the failure mode of a collapsed framed structure constructed in the South of Italy and failed in 2004 under its self-weight. Information available was the results on extensive experimental test campaign, for the determination of mechanical properties of concrete and steel bars of beams, floors and columns involved in the failure. Moreover, draws of original design with construction details and design rules valid in Italy at the time of construction were found. A simple monodimensional beam model for prediction of load-deflection curve, able to include degradation of constituent materials (concrete, steel and bond) was…
Modeling friction between shearing brittle surfaces with a discrete element method
2018
Hauraiden materiaalien murtuminen on eräs materiaalifysiikan peruskysymyksistä.
Modeling Political Corruption in Spain
2021
Political corruption is a universal phenomenon. Even though it is a cross-country reality, its level of intensity and the manner of its effect vary worldwide. In Spain, the demonstrated political corruption cases that have been echoed by the media in recent years for their economic, judicial and social significance are merely the tip of the iceberg as regards a problem hidden by many interested parties, plus the shortage of the means to fight against it. This study models and quantifies the population at risk of committing political corruption in Spain by identifying and quantifying the drivers that explain political corruption. Having quantified the problem, the model allows changes to be …
Emotional expression in music: contribution, linearity, and additivity of primary musical cues
2013
The aim of this study is to manipulate musical cues systematically to determine the aspects of music that contribute to emotional expression, and whether these cues operate in additive or interactive fashion, and whether the cue levels can be characterized as linear or non-linear. An optimized factorial design was used with six primary musical cues (mode, tempo, dynamics, articulation, timbre, and register) across four different music examples. Listeners rated 200 musical examples according to four perceived emotional characters (happy, sad, peaceful, and scary). The results exhibited robust effects for all cues and the ranked importance of these was established by multiple regression. The …
