Cultural Policies of Safeguard of Traditional Heritage. The Sicilian Case

The paper reconstructs an experience of cooperation between the University of Palermo and the Department of Cultural Heritage, Natural Heritage and Public Education of the Sicilian Regional Government, that took place at the end of 1970s. This experience is still regarded as a model of good practice based on the connection “culture and development” and focused on the recovery of traditional heritage. The author proposes an evaluation on short, medium and long-term effects on the Sicilian territory, dealing with notions such as memory and history, and discussing on the mechanism of objectivation of one’s own culture.

Comparative linguistics seems to suggest that the gap between two languages can be filled by grammar. But mapping the structural gaps between languages hardly makes for the more fundamental gap that is created by the writing of a new text, a supposedly identical addendum to the first. Evolutionary advantage conferred by an eukaryote-to-eukaryote gene transfer event in wine yeasts

Although an increasing number of horizontal gene transfers have been reported in eukaryotes, experimental evidence for their adaptive value is lacking. Here, we report the recent transfer of a 158-kb genomic region between Torulaspora microellipsoides and Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine yeasts or closely related strains. This genomic region has undergone several rearrangements in S. cerevisiae strains, including gene loss and gene conversion between two tandemly duplicated FOT genes encoding oligopeptide transporters.
