Studies in murine experimental Leishmania major infection have helped to understand the requirements for efficient development of T helper (Th)1/cytotoxic T (Tc)1-mediated protection against the parasite. As such they have revealed that Fc gamma receptor (Fc gamma R)I and Fc gamma RIII-mediated uptake of L. major amastigotes by dendritic cells (DC) is an important prerequisite for Th1 development. In addition, DC-derived cytokines contribute to adequate T-cell education. First Report of Botrytis Blight on Medinilla magnifica and Various Species of Mandevilla and Allamanda in Italy.

Medinilla magnifica Lindl., Mandevilla splendens (Hook.) Woodson, the hybrid Mandevilla × amoena ‘Alice du Pont’ (pink allamanda), and various species of Allamanda, such as A. cathartica L. and A. blanchetii A. DC. (purple allamanda), are grown in Sicily as ornamentals. After a frost in early December 2001, a sudden wilt of container-grown cuttings of these tropical species was observed in a plastic-covered production greenhouse, with ≈30% of M. magnifica plants and 70% of Mandevilla and Allamanda plants affected. Metagenomic Analysis of Milk of Healthy and Mastitis-Suffering Women.

Background: Some studies have been conducted to assess the composition of the bacterial communities inhabiting human milk, but they did not evaluate the presence of other microorganisms, such as fungi, archaea, protozoa, or viruses. Objective: This study aimed to compare the metagenome of human milk samples provided by healthy and mastitis-suffering women. Methods: DNA was isolated from human milk samples collected from 10 healthy women and 10 women with symptoms of lactational mastitis. <strong>The mesothoracic wings of Afrotropical Scutelleridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera): morphology and taxonomic significance</strong>

Mesothoracic wings have been examined and compared in 32 species representing 20 genera of Afrotropical Scutelleridae. Morphological characters of the corium are described. Three main types of mesothoracic wing venation patterns can be recognized. The taxonomic significance of forewing characters in Scutelleridae is briefly discussed.

First report of Phytophthora palmivora as a pathogen of olive in Italy

Olive (Olea europea L.) is an economically important crop in Italy and is planted on about 1 million ha. The Apulia, Calabria, and Sicily regions of Southern Italy account for about 70% of the production. Many new plantations have been established during the last 10 years. In summer 1999, 1- to 2-year-old olive trees (cv. Carolea) with decline symptoms were observed in new plantations in Catanzaro Province (Calabria). The symptoms associated with the root rot were leaf chlorosis, defoliation, wilting, twig dieback, and eventual plant collapse. In some cases, more than 40% of the trees were affected. Association of Marginal Leaf Scorch with Sodium Accumulation in Salt-stressed Peach

The effect of specific ion toxicity during salt stress was tested in the present study. The experiment was repeated twice, in 1996 and 1998, with `Nemaguard' peach seedlings and rooted cuttings grown in hydroponics under two NaCl concentrations (50 and 30 mm). Foliage was separated in symptomatic and symptomless leaves and the amount of sodium (Na+) and chloride (C1–) was determined. Significantly higher Na+ content was found in symptomatic than in symptomless leaves in both experiments, whereas in only two of the six cases was Cl– content higher in symptomatic than in symptomless leaves. A diterpenoid with antifeedant activity from Scutellaria rubicunda

Abstract Two diterpenoids have been isolated from Scutellaria rubicunda subsp. linneana : (11 S ,13 S ,15 R and S , 16 R ,19 S )-6 α -acetoxy-19-tigloyloxy-2 α ,19;4 α ,18;11,16;15,16-tetraepoxy-neo-clerodan-15-ol (scutecyprol B) and (11 S ,13 S ,15 R and S , 16 R ,19 S )-6 α -acetoxy-2 α ,19;4 α ,18;11,16;15,16-tetra-epoxy-neo-cleroda-15,19,diol (scutalbin C). Both compounds were tested for antifeedant activity against larvae of some species of Lepidoptera. Scutecyprol B shows potent activity at 100 ppm.

Scuteparvin, a new neoclerodane diterpenoid from Scutellaria parvula

Abstract The diterpenoid fraction occurring in the acetone extract of the aerial parts of Scutellaria parvula has been investigated. Only one neoclerodane diterpenoid, scuteparvin, was isolated and its structure elucidated as 4α,18-epoxy-6α- trans -cinnamoyloxy- neo clerod-13-en-15,16-olide, a new natural product. Scuteparvin is quite similar to the already known ajugarin V from Ajuga remota , the only difference being the occurrence of a trans -cinnamoyl ester system instead of an acetate on the 6α-OH group. This finding confirms that the genera Scutellaria and Ajuga are closely related taxonomically.
