Assessment of allyl isothiocyanate as a fumigant to avoid mycotoxin production during corn storage

2016

The occurrence of fungi and mycotoxins in foods modify sensorial properties and represents a health risk for consumers, and the use of natural antimicrobials may be an alternative to reduce this problem. The objective of this study was evaluate the potential of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) in inhibit the production of mycotoxins in corn kernels by Aspergillus parasticus, Fusarium tricinctum, Fusarium verticillioides, Alternaria alternata and Gibberela zeae. Kernels were treated with gaseous AITC at 50, 100 or 500 μL/L during 48 h in hermetic flasks. Then, flasks were opened for 24 h and 100 g of corn were inoculated with 105 conidia/g of either fungal species. Flasks were kept at 23 °…

The Vibrio choleare haemolysin anion channel is required for cell vacuolation and death

2002

SummarySeveral strains of Vibrio cholerae secrete ahaemolytic toxin of 63kDa, termed V. cholerae cytolysin (VCC). This toxin causes extensive vacuo-lation and death of cells in culture and forms ananion-selective channel in planar lipid bilayers and incells. Here, we identify inhibitors of the VCC anionchannel and show that the formation of the anionchannel is necessary for the development of the vacuoles and for the cell death induced by this toxin. Using markers of cell organelles, we show that vacuoles derive from different intracellular com-partments and we identify the contribution of lateendosomes and of the trans -Golgi network in vacuolebiogenesis.Introduction The Gram-negative bact…

Azido and thiocyanato bridged dinuclear Ni(II) complexes involving 8-aminoquinoline based Schiff base as blocking ligands: Crystal structures, ferrom…

2020

Abstract The use of two 8-aminoquinoline-based tridentate N3-donor rigid Schiff base ligands (L1 and L2) with Ni(II) in the presence of the pseudohalides, NaN3 and NaSCN results in the crystallization of the two novel Ni(II) dimers: [Ni2(L1)2(µ1,1′-N3)2(N3)2] (1) and [Ni2(L2)2(µ1,3-NCS)2(NCS)2] (2). Both complexes are centrosymmetric Ni(II) dimers where the Schiff base ligands coordinate the octahedral Ni(II) centres in a mer configuration with one terminal and two bridging pseudohalide ligands in the remaining positions. Complex 1 shows Ni(II) ions connected by a double µ1,1′-N3− bridge whereas in complex 2 the Ni(II) ions are connected by a double µ1,3-NCS− bridge. The magnetic properties…

A Simple System Based on a Thiourea-Modified Fluorescein for ω-Amino Acid Discrimination

2015

A thiourea-modified fluorescein derivative was synthesized by reaction of fluorescein isothiocyanate with 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethan-1-ol. UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy studies demonstrated that this heteroditopic receptor was able to discriminate among linear aliphatic ω-amino acids with different chain lengths.

Isocratic high-performance liquid chromatographic determination of tryptophan in infant formulas.

1996

The application to infant formulas of a method for tryptophan determination by isocratic HPLC with UV detection at 254 nm, after derivatization with phenyl isothiocyanate, was studied. Protein was hydrolysed by barium hydroxide at 120 degrees C for 8 h, followed by derivatization with phenyl isothiocyanate, HPLC and UV detection at 254 nm. The optimum chromatographic conditions (pH, ionic strength of elution solvent and eluent ratio) were established. The analytical parameters (linearity, precision, accuracy of derivatization and limits of detection and quantification) were determined. The values obtained demonstrated that the method is useful for determining the tryptophan content of infan…

Isobaric Vapor–Liquid Equilibria for the Extractive Distillation of Ethanol + Water Mixtures Using 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Dicyanamide

2011

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) for the binary systems ethanol + 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([emim][DCA]) and water + [emim][DCA] as well as the VLE for the ternary system ethanol + water + [emim][DCA] have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The effect of [emim][DCA] on the ethanol + water system has been compared with that produced by another ionic liquid reported in the literature on the basis of the variation of solvent activity coefficients in ionic liquid (IL) + molecular solvent binary systems. From the results, [emim][DCA] appears as one of the best entrainers for the extractive distillation of the ethanol + water mixtures, causing the azeotrope…

1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Dicyanamide as a Very Efficient Entrainer for the Extractive Distillation of the Acetone + Methanol System

2012

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) for the ternary system acetone + methanol +1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([emim][DCA]) as well as the two solvent + IL binary systems have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The addition of [emim][DCA] to the solvent mixture produced a salting-out effect greater than that produced by other ionic liquids, showing that this ionic liquid is, until now, the best IL tested as an entrainer for the extractive distillation of the acetone + methanol mixtures, causing the azeotrope to disappear for an ionic liquid mole fraction as low as 0.031, at 100 kPa. This behavior can be explained on the basis of the influence of the IL concent…

Antikonvulsiva, 1. Mitt. Thiocarbamoylbutyroguanamine

1986

Anticonvulsivic Agents, I: Thiocarbamoylbutyroguanamines The thiocarbamoylbutyroguanamines 3a-c are accessible by addition of butyroguanamine (1) to the isothiocyanates 2a-c. In vitro antifungal activity of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) against Aspergillus parasiticus and Penicillium expansum and evaluation of the AITC estim…

2015

Abstract Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are natural compounds derived from cruciferous vegetables produced by enzymatic conversion of metabolites called glucosinolates. They are potentially useful antimicrobial compounds for food applications have been shown to be promising agents against cancer in human cell culture, animal models, and in epidemiological studies. In this study, the antifungal activity of the allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) was evaluated on two mycotoxigenic fungi as Aspergillus parasiticus and Penicillium expnsum , aflatoxins (AFs) and patulin (PAT) producers, employing an assay on solid medium. Also an approximation of the risk evaluation associated to the intake of food treated with…

Kinin receptor status in normal and inflammed gastric mucosa

1997

No documented studies have been reported on the presence of B1 and B2 kinin receptors in the mammalian gastric mucosa. This first study aimed to immunolocalise sites of B1 and B2 kinin receptors in the human pyloric gastric mucosa and to evaluate its role in gastritis. Biopsies were obtained from patients with dyspepsia during endoscopic examination of the patient. The diagnosis and grading of the gastritis was performed on histological examination. Sections were immunostained for both B1 and B2 receptors using rabbit anti-human B1 and B2 kinin receptor antibodies. Control tissue was obtained from partial gastrectomy specimens, following surgical excision of the antrum for duodenal ulcers. …
