Racemic S ‐(ethylsulfonyl)‐ dl ‐cysteine N ‐Carboxyanhydrides Improve Chain Lengths and Monomer Conversion for β‐Sheet‐Controlled Ring‐Opening Polyme…

2020

The secondary structure formation of polypeptides not only governs folding and solution self-assembly but also affects the nucleophilic ring-opening polymerization of alpha-amino acid-N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs). Whereby helical structures are known to enhance polymerization rates, beta-sheet-like assemblies reduce the propagation rate or may even terminate chain growth by precipitation or gelation. To overcome these unfavorable properties, racemic mixtures of NCAs can be applied. In this work, racemicS-(ethylsulfonyl)-dl-cysteine NCA is investigated for the synthesis of polypeptides, diblock and triblock copolypept(o)ides. In contrast to the polymerization of stereoregularS-(ethylsulfonyl)-…

Combining inulin multifunctional polycation and magnetic nanoparticles: Redox-responsive siRNA-loaded systems for magnetofection

2019

Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) are recognized as one of the most promising agents for theranostic applications. Among methods designed for siRNA delivery, magnetofection, that is, nucleic acid cell uptake under the influence of a magnetic field acting on magnetic nucleic acid vectors, is emerging as a unique approach to combining advantages such as strong improvement of the kinetics of the delivery process and the possibility of localizing nucleic acid delivery to an area where the magnetic field is applied. This paper reports on the preparation of siRNA loaded magnetoplexes&mdash

Establishing the relative importance of sympatric definitive hosts in the transmission of the sealworm, Pseudoterranova decipiens: a host-community a…

2001

The importance of a given host to a particular parasite can be determined according to three different criteria: host preference, host physiological suitability and host contribution to transmission. Most studies on the sealworm Pseudoterranova decipiens have focussed on the latter factor, but few attempts have been made to develop a quantitative transmission model evaluating the relative importance of each host. The purpose of this study was to propose a flow-chart model to study sealworm transmission within a seal community. The model was applied to hypothetical data of four seal species acting as definitive hosts of P. decipiens sensu stricto in eastern Canada: harp seal Phoca groenlandi…

Correct oligomerization is a prerequisite for insertion of the central molecular domain of staphylococcal α-toxin into the lipid bilayer

1995

Staphylococcal alpha-toxin is a primarily hydrophilic molecule that binds as a monomer to target membranes and then aggregates to form amphiphilic oligomers that represent water-filled transmembrane channels. Current evidence indicates that a region located in the center of the molecule inserts deeply into the bilayer. In the present study, we sought to determine whether membrane insertion was triggered by the oligomerization process, and whether insertion correlated with pore formation. Double mutants of alpha-toxin were prepared in which His-35 was replaced by Arg, and cysteine residues were introduced at positions 69, 130 and 186. Substitution of His-35 with Arg rendered the toxin molecu…

Criteria for Defining Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as a Predominantly Hyperandrogenic Syndrome: An Androgen Excess Society Guideline

2006

Abstract Objective: The Androgen Excess Society (AES) charged a task force to review all available data and recommend an evidence-based definition for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), whether already in use or not, to guide clinical diagnosis and future research. Participants: Participants included expert investigators in the field. Evidence: Based on a systematic review of the published peer-reviewed medical literature, by querying MEDLINE databases, we tried to identify studies evaluating the epidemiology or phenotypic aspects of PCOS. Consensus Process: The task force drafted the initial report, following a consensus process via electronic communication, which was then reviewed and crit…

Immunohistochemical expression of glucose transporter 1 in keratin-producing odontogenic cysts

2016

Background: Keratin-producing odontogenic cysts (KPOCs) are a group of cystic lesions that are often aggressive, with high rates of recurrence and multifocality. KPOCs included orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst (OOC) and parakeratotic odontogenic cysts, which are now considered true tumours denominated keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOTs). GLUT1 is a protein transporter that is involved in the active uptake of glucose across cell membranes and that is overexpressed in tumours in close correlation with the proliferation rate and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging results. Methods: A series of 58 keratin-producing odontogenic cysts was evaluated histologically and immunohistochemi…

Embryo classification method based in time-lapse analysis is associated with blastocyst quality

2012

groups: 87.7%(10434/11893), 87.4%(2674/3060), 80.2%(1350/1683) and 81.0%(634/783). Abnormal fertilization rate was significantly lower in 9598% group(6.9%,54/783) than other groups(16.1%,1918/11893; 13.8%,421/ 3060; 11.4%,192/1683). Good embryo, pregnancy and implantation rates were no significant differences among four groups(48.9%,61.6%,43.5%; 48.9%,62.1%,43.5%; 50.0%,57.6%,42.3%; 53.1%,62.5%,45.7%). CONCLUSION: Sperm morphology does not affect normal fertilization, embryonic development and clinical outcome.

Premedication with oral solution of simethicone plus N-acetylcysteine to improve the quality upper GI endoscopy: Initial experience

2020

Introduction: To assess the efficacy and safety of simethicone with or without N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as premedications before gastroscopy. Materials and methods: Patients were randomized into 5 groups. Endoscopic visibility was evaluated in 4 districts (esophagus, gastric body, fundus and antrum) using a visual scale, graduating from 1 to 4 points. Results: There was no significant difference on the rate of positive findings when comparing simethicone with simethicone plus NAC and with water, respectively. Simethicone plus NAC showed better total mucosal visibility score than simethicone alone. Both simethicone plus NAC and simethicone alone offer more benefit than water. The procedure tim…

Italian familial defective apolipoprotein B patients share a unique haplotype with other Caucasian patients.

2001

Familial defective apolipoprotein (apo) B-100 together with familial hypercholesterolemia are the two common genetic conditions that cause hypercholesterolemia. Familial defective apolipoprotein B-100 is due to mutations around codon 3500 of the apo B gene. The most-characterized mutation is a G>A transition at nucleotide 10,708 that results in the substitution of arginine by glutamine at codon 3500 (Apo B Arg3500Gln). Two other mutations are caused by a C>T transition, one at nucleotide 10,800 (Apo B Arg3531Cys) and the other at nucleotide 10,707 (apo B Arg3500Trp). In the present study we describe three new Italian cases of familial defective apolipoprotein B-100 (Apo B Arg3500Gln), one f…

Comparative analysis of stress responses of H9c2 rat cardiomyoblasts following treatment with doxorubicin and tBOOH

2011

Abstract Cardiotoxicity is the major dose-limiting adverse effect of anthracyclines and is hypothesized to result from damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) or inhibition of topoisomerase II. Here, we comparatively analyzed the effect of doxorubicin and the organic peroxide tertiary-butylhydroperoxide (tBOOH) on stress responses of rat cardiomyblast cells (H9c2). Moreover, we investigated the impact of serum factors and the novel prototypical protein kinase CK2 inhibitor resorufin on the sensentivity of H9c2 cells exposed to doxorubicin or tBOOH. Measuring cell viability by use of the WST assay as well as cell cycle progression and apoptotic death by FACS-based methods, we found t…
