Cross-age effects on forensic face construction

2015

This work was supported in part by an award from the UK Economic and Social Research Council (RES-000-22-4150) to Dr Charity Brown and Dr Charlie Frowd The own-age bias (OAB) refers to recognition memory being more accurate for people of our own age than other age groups (e.g., Wright and Stroud, 2002). This paper investigated whether the OAB effect is present during construction of human faces (also known as facial composites, often for forensic/police use). In doing so, it adds to our understanding of factors influencing both facial memory across the life span as well as performance of facial composites. Participant-witnesses were grouped into younger (19-35 years) and older (51-80 years)…

Sialic acid-containing glycoproteins on renal cells determine nucleation of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals

2001

Sialic acid-containing glycoproteins on renal cells determine nucleation of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals. Background The interaction between the surfaces of renal epithelial cells and calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD), the most common crystal in human urine, was studied to identify critical determinants of kidney stone formation. Methods A novel technique utilizing vapor diffusion of oxalic acid was employed to nucleate COD crystals onto the apical surface of living cells. Confluent monolayers were grown in the inner 4 wells of 24-well culture plates. To identify cell surface molecules that regulate crystal nucleation, cells were pretreated with a protease (trypsin or proteinase K) to a…

Purification of a cytochrome aa3 terminal oxidase from protoplast membrane vesicles of Micrococcus luteus

1994

Abstract A cytochrome aa 3 terminal oxidase was isolated from protoplast membrane vesicles of Micrococcus luteus grown under aerobic conditions. The purified complex showed similarities to cytochrome c oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) of the electron transport chain of mitochondria and many prokaryotes. The enzyme was solubilized by subsequent treatment with the detergents CHAPS and n- dodecyl -β- d - maltoside and purified by ion-exchange chromatography using poly- l -lysine agarose and TMAE-fractogel-650 (S) columns, followed by hydroxyapatite chromatography. The purified complex is composed of two major subunits with apparent molecular masses of 54 and 32 kDa. After purification the isolated enzyme …

Active oxygen species production in tobacco cells elicited by cryptogein*

1997

We analyse the relationship between active oxygen species (AOS) production and pH changes induced in tobacco cells by cryptogein, a fungal proteinaceous elicitor of defence mechanisms in plants. When tobacco cells were treated with cryptogein, an intracellular acidification, an alkalinization of the extracellular medium and a transient burst of AOS (H 2 O 2 ) were observed. Treatment of elicited cells with either diphenyleneiodonium (DPI), an inhibitor of the neutrophil NADPH oxidase, or Tiron, which scavenges O2 - , abolished AOS production. These data suggest the involvement of a NADPH oxidase-like enzyme leading to H 2 O 2 production through O 2 - dismutation. Although H 2 O 2 production…

Effects of Citrus Exocortis Viroid Infection on the Peroxidase/IAA-Oxidase System of Gynura aurantiaca and Lycoperszcon esculentum

1987

Summary The peroxidase/indoleacetic acid (IAA) oxidase system of plants of Gynura aurantiaca and Lycopersicon esculentum healthy and infected by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) was studied. In these hosts, the infection induced an increase of both enzymic activities, when they were measured between 40 and 50 d post inoculation. The analysis of isozyme composition by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and specific staining of peroxidase revealed an intensification of most of the zymogram bands as well as the premature appearance of one of the isozymes in the two plants investigated. All the tomato isoperoxidases exhibited IAA-oxidase activity when measured with the oxygen electrode. These resu…

Modification of the proteolytic fragmentation pattern upon oxidation of cysteines from ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase.

2003

The proteolytic susceptibility of the native CO 2 -fixing photosynthetic enzyme ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39, Rubisco) has been shown to increase in vitro after oxidative treatments that affect cysteine thiols. A limited incubation of oxidized (pretreated with the disulfide cystamine) Rubisco from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with subtilisin or proteinase K generated fragments of molecular mass about 53 kDa (band I in SDS-PAGE) and 47 kDa (band II) derived from the large subunit (55 kDa) of the enzyme. In contrast, proteolysis of the reduced Rubisco (pretreated with the free thiol cysteamine) produced only the 53 kDa band. The same fragmentation pattern was repr…

7-Nitroindazole protects striatal neurons against MPP+ -induced degeneration.

2006

The neuropathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) is the selective degeneration of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). In this study, using a microdialysis technique, we investigated whether an inhibitor of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), 7-nitrindazole (7-NI), could protect against DAergic neuronal damage induced by in vivo infusion of 1-methyl-4-phenylpiridinium iodide (MPP+) in freely moving rats. Experiments were performed over 2 days in three groups of rats: (a) nonlesioned, (b) MPP+-lesioned, and (c) 7-NI pretreated MPP+-lesioned rats. On day 1, control rats were perfused with an artificial CSF, while 1 mM MPP+ was infused into t…

Leukoma antiqua (Bivalvia) - A high-resolution marine paleoclimate archive for southern South America?

2018

The Patagonian Sea in the SW Atlantic is one of the most productive marine ecosystems worldwide. Besides its economic relevance, this shelf sea serves as a major sink for atmospheric CO2 and thus plays a major role in global climate. Despite that, the marine climate dynamics in that region remain barely known. Instrumental records only cover the last 30 years or so and high-resolution climate archives are currently not available. Here, we explore the possibility to obtain seasonally to inter-annually resolved paleotemperature data from shells of the bivalve mollusk, Leukoma antiqua collected alive from the shallow subtidal zone of the San Jorge Gulf. Results demonstrate that this species gr…

The essential oil composition of the endemic plant species Centaurea vandasii and chemotaxonomy of section Phalolepis (Asteraceae)

2021

In the present study, the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of the endemic plant species, Centaurea vandasii Velen (sect. Phalolepis, Asteraceae), collected in its locus classicus in Rhodope Mts, Bulgaria, was evaluated by GC-MS. The main components of the oil were hexadecanoic acid (18.3%), tetradecanoic acid (13.8%), caryophyllene oxide (12.1%) and germacrene D (8.4%). Furthermore, a complete literature review on the composition of the essential oils of all the other taxa of Centaurea, belonging to section Phalolepis, studied so far, was performed. HCA (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis) and PCA (Principal Component Analyses) were used in order to demonstrate chemota…
