Juvenile sudden cardiac death due to congenital coronary ostial valve-like ridges: A case report and literature review
2023
Coronary artery anomalies are a heterogeneous group of congenital disorders affecting the coronary pattern with a characteristic (origin, number, number of hosts, course, etc.). They are rarely found in the population. We report the case of a 21-year-old male who died from sudden cardiac death caused by an isolated coronary ostial obstruction, secondary to a rare anomaly, the presence of a valve-like ridge consisting of a small fold in the Valsalva aortic sinus. The study provides a brief literature review on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and clinical and medico-legal issues in coronary artery anomaly cases that may be helpful in forensic practice when dealing with sudden cardiac death i…
Spectral shapes of forbidden argon β decays as background component for rare-event searches
2018
The spectral shape of the electrons from the two first-forbidden unique ${\beta }^{-}$ decays of 39Ar and 42Ar were calculated for the first time to the next-to-leading order. Especially the spectral shape of the 39Ar decay can be used to characterize this background component for dark matter searches based on argon. Alternatively, due to the low thresholds of these experiments, the spectral shape can be investigated over a wide energy range with high statistics and thus allow a sensitive comparison with the theoretical predictions, in particular at low electron energies where the shape of the computed β spectrum has a slight dependence on the value of the weak axial-vector coupling constan…
Microscopic calculation of the $\beta^-$ decays of $^{151}$Sm, $^{171}$Tm, and $^{210}$Pb with implications to detection of the cosmic neutrino backg…

The electron spectral shapes corresponding to the low-$Q$ $\beta^-$-decay transitions $^{151}$Sm$(5/2^-_{\rm g.s.})\to\,^{151}\textrm{Eu}(5/2^+_{\rm g.s.})$, $^{151}$Sm$(5/2^-_{\rm g.s.})\to\,^{151}\textrm{Eu}(7/2^+_{1})$, $^{171}$Tm$(1/2^+_{\rm g.s.})\to\,^{171}\textrm{Yb}(1/2^-_{\rm g.s.})$, $^{171}$Tm$(1/2^+_{\rm g.s.})\to\,^{171}\textrm{Yb}(3/2^-_{1})$, $^{210}\textrm{Pb}(0^+_{\rm g.s.})\to\,^{210}\textrm{Bi}(1^-_{\rm g.s.})$, and $^{210}\textrm{Pb}(0^+_{\rm g.s.})\to\,^{210}\textrm{Bi}(0^-_{1})$ have been computed using beta-decay theory with several refinements for these first-forbidden nonunique (ff-nu) $\beta^-$ transitions. These ff-nu $\beta^-$ transitions have non-trivial electro…
Nanofibrillar scaffold resists to bile and urine action: experiences in pigs
2020
Biomaterial-based-scaffolds’ functions are to replace anatomical and functional features loss of an injured tissue. They can replace native tissue after their reabsorption. Material and methods. In our experimental procedures we utilized the PHEA-PLA+PCL scaffold in 2 female pigs to assess its resistance to bile and urine. Results. Both pigs survived to surgical procedures. After a month fibres appeared unchanged in term of form and dimension at electronic microscopy. Cells and ECM factors were founded inside the scaffold in a microscopical evaluation. Conclusion. Planar and tubular scaffolds were colonized by cells and extracellular matrix elements. The study conducted on pig suggested tha…
Possible association of sudden infant death with partial complement C4 deficiency revealed by post-mortem DNA typing of HLA class II and III genes
1989
Based on evidence of an increased rate of respiratory infections in sudden infant death (SID) infants as well as the observation of familial occurrence, we analysed in a retrospective study class II and class II genes of the major histocompatibility complex in 40 cases of SID by Southern blot analysis of DNA obtained post mortem from tissue samples. In 24 cases, the parents were interviewed and confirmatory human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) and DNA typing was carried out. Using HLA-DR beta and -DQ beta probes, no evidence of an abnormal HLA-DR frequency distribution in SID infants was detected (P = 0.97). Using DNA probes for the tandemly arranged complement C4 and steroid 21-hydroxylase genes…
Impact of stage migration on bladder cancer: A slow but steady improvement in the long term survival rates after radical cystectomy in the last 25 ye…
2016
INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES: Bladder cancer (BCa) is a heterogeneous disease with up to 25% of incidental diagnoses reported to be found muscle invasive at first episode. Numerous markers and an increased awareness have been recorded in the recent years. We sought to evaluate if those considerat ions may determine a change in BCa clinical presentation at radical cystectomy (RC) over years in a single high volume tert iary referral center. MATERIAL & METHODS: The study relied on 2,003 consecutive BCa pat ients treated with RC and extended pelvic lymphadenectomy (PLND) at a single inst itution between January 1990 and December 2014. Pat ients were st ratified into tertiles according to …

PATIENT’S COMPLIANCE TO INTRAVESCICAL BCG IN ROUTINE CLINICAL PRACTICE, RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF 411 CONSECUTIVE PATIENTS.
2014
Aim of the study BCG maintenance for at least one year is advocated by urological guidelines as the best intravesical regimen in high-risk non muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), conservatively treated. Noteworthy, a relevant percentage of patients does not complete the planned treatment even if toxicity accounted for less that 10% of drop outs in recent multi-institutional trials. The aim of this study was to analyze the reasons for treatment interruption in everyday clinical practice. Materials and methods Consecutive patients affected by T1HG NMIBC undergoing conservative management with adjuvant BCG entered the study. The Connaught BCG strain was administered intravesically, at the …
