Electroplated Indium Bumps as Thermal and Electrical Connections of NTD-Ge Sensors for the Fabrication of Microcalorimeter Arrays

We are developing a method to build arrays of Ge-based microcalorimeters for soft X-rays detection using micro-photolithographic techniques. A key element of the process is the electrical and thermal connection between the germanium sensors and the interconnection electrical tracks, that lay on a substrate acting as mechanical support and thermal sink. The geometry of the sensors, that have a square base truncated pyramid shape, makes feasible a connection through indium soldering. CDTE AND CDZNTE PIXEL DETECTORS FOR X-RAY SPECTROSCOPIC IMAGING

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) wide band gap semiconductors for x-ray detectors have experienced a rather rapid development in the last few years. Among the traditional x-ray detectors based on silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge), CdTe and CdZnTe detectors show higher detection efficiency at high energies and good room temperature performance and are well suited for the development of compact detection systems and pixel arrays for simultaneous measurements of photon interaction position and energy. Development and applications of transition-edge sensors

This thesis focuses on the theory, development and applications of Transition- Edge Sensor (TES) arrays. The main results are the design and development of a fabrication process for a 256 pixel X-ray TES detector with a novel geometry and the development of a measurement setup for TES detectors used in elemental analysis with Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) measurements. In the early stages of this thesis we fabricated a small scale 32 pixel TES array, but for an actual application purposes the pixel count and the consistency of the fabrication needs to be higher. Filters for X-Ray Detectors on Space Missions

Thin filters and gas-tight windows are used in space to protect sensitive X-ray detectors from out-of-band electromagnetic radiation, low-energy particles, and molecular contamination. Though very thin and made of light materials, filters are not fully transparent to X-rays. For this reason, they ultimately define the detector quantum efficiency at low energies. Time-dependent current-voltage characteristics of Al/p-CdTe/Pt x-ray detectors

Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of Schottky Al/p-CdTe/Pt detectors were investigated in dark and at different temperatures. CdTe detectors with Al rectifying contacts, very appealing for high resolution x-ray and gamma ray spectroscopy, suffer from bias-induced polarization phenomena which cause current increasing with the time and severe worsening of the spectroscopic performance.
