Peripheral androgen blockade versus glandular androgen suppression in the treatment of hirsutism.

Hirsutism in women is often explained on the basis of abnormal peripheral androgen metabolism. To determine whether serum markers of ovarian, adrenal, or peripheral androgen production may be helpful determinants in the treatment of hirsutism and to compare the efficacy of treatment with dexamethasone or spironolactone, 20 hyperandrogenic hirsute patients were treated for up to 2 years. Eleven women who were selected on the basis of sensitivity to dexamethasone were treated with a daily dose of 0.37 mg dexamethasone and had androgen levels suppressed into the normal range. AbstractThis statement addresses the need to provide clinically relevant and practical guidance for long-term care staff working in care homes and other stakeholders engaged in the care of residents who require consideration for dexamethasone and oxygen therapy. It had been provided following a series of consensus discussions between the EDWPOP and the EuGMS in January and February 2021. Its main aim is to minimise morbidity and mortality from serious acute illnesses including COVID-19 requiring these treatments within the long-term care sector.

Effect of selected triterpenoids on chronic dermal inflammation.

The activity of four natural triterpenoids on a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate multiple-dose model of skin chronic inflammation was studied. Erythrodiol and ursolic acid were significantly effective. The most important features concerning structure-activity relationship and previous data on the effect of these triterpenoids on other inflammatory conditions are discussed.

Immunosuppression with glucocorticoids is a common treatment for autoimmune liver diseases and after liver transplant, which is however associated with severe side-effects. Targeted delivery of glucocorticoids to inflammatory cells, e.g. liver macrophages and Kupffer cells, is a promising approach for minimizing side effects. Glucocorticoids have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of certain types of liver diseases by delaying the development of cirrhosis. We report on a case of idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome complicated by AION. To our knowledge such an association hasn't been previously described. We suggest that scleral thickening caused obstruction of vortex veins followed by uveal effusion and compression of posterior ciliary arteries within their intrascleral tract, leading to AION. Nevertheless it can't be excluded that AION was the result of mechanical compression on ciliary vessels of optic disc by choroidal detachment. © 1996, Kluwer Academic Publishers. All rights reserved.
