The muon magnetic moment

1981

Muon mass and muon magnetic moment are not calculabIe within the theory of Quantum Eiectrodynamics; they rather define the reference acaie in which masses and energies should be determined when muons are used to test QED or to search for anomalous muon coupiings which couid provide the "raison d'@tre" for the muon. Oniy the anomaious part of the muon magnetic moment experimentaily determined with remarkable precision I), can be oaIculated 2~" Theory and experiment agree preciseiy once corrections being appiied for hadronic and weak processes which poiiute the immaculated fieid of QED at high momentum transfers. First observation of trapped high-field seeking ultracold neutron spin states

2011

Ultracold neutrons were stored in a volume, using a magnetic dipole field shutter. Radial confinement was provided by material walls. Low-field seeking neutrons were axially confined above the magnetic field. High-field seeking neutrons are trapped inside the magnetic field. They can systematically shift the measured neutron lifetime to lower values in experiments with magnetic confinement. ISSN:0370-2693 ISSN:0031-9163 ISSN:1873-2445

Static freezing transition at a finite temperature in a quasi-one-dimensional deuteron glass.

1996

The dipolar freezing process of a quasi-one-dimensional betaine deuteron glass was studied using linear and nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy. The linear response as measured for frequencies $5\mathrm{mHz}l\ensuremath{\nu}l200\mathrm{MHz}$ was analyzed using the recently invented $\ensuremath{\delta}$ plot, providing evidence for a static freezing transition near 30 K. Measurements of the ergodic to nonergodic transition as well as of the incipient divergence of the nonlinear susceptibility yield independent confirmation of this quasistatic freezing transition temperature. The critical exponent describing the nonlinear behavior is found to be $\ensuremath{\gamma}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\p…

Comment on "Highly nonlinear, sign-varying shift of hydrogen spectral lines in dense plasmas".

2004

The shift of hydrogen and hydrogenlike spectral lines in dense plasmas, calculated with the full computer simulation method, in nonquenching, classical path, dipole approximation for plasma-emitter interaction, is equal to zero. In the paper commented on, Escarguel et al., Phys. Rev. E 62, 2667 (2000) the electron concentrations ${N}_{e}$ and the corresponding temperature values T are shown to have been determined incorrectly.

Electric polarizability of nuclei from a longitudinal sum rule

1998

The nuclear electric polarizability is theoretically analyzed using a sum rule derived from the longitudinal part of the forward Compton amplitude. Beyond the leading dipole contribution, this approach leads to the presence of potential-dependent terms that do not show up in previous analyses. The significance of these new contributions is illustrated by performing an explicit calculation for a proton-neutron system interacting via a separable potential.

Time reversal violating Magnetic Quadrupole Moment in heavy deformed nuclei

2018

The existence of permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) and magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs) violate both time reversal invariance (T) and parity (P). Following the CPT theorem they also violate combined CP symmetry. Nuclear EDMs are completely screened in atoms and molecules while interaction between electrons and MQMs creates atomic and molecular EDMs which can be measured and used to test CP-violation theories. Nuclear MQMs are produced by the nucleon-nucleon T, P-odd interaction and by nucleon EDMs. In this work we study the effect of enhancement of the nuclear MQMs due to the nuclear quadrupole deformation. Using the Nilsson model we calculate the nuclear MQMs for deformed nuclei o…

Benchmark calculations of electromagnetic sum rules with a symmetry-adapted basis and hyperspherical harmonics

2020

We demonstrate the ability to calculate electromagnetic sum rules with the \textit{ab initio} symmetry-adapted no-core shell model. By implementing the Lanczos algorithm, we compute non-energy weighted, energy weighted, and inverse energy weighted sum rules for electric monopole, dipole, and quadrupole transitions in $^4$He using realistic interactions. We benchmark the results with the hyperspherical harmonics method and show agreement within $2\sigma$, where the uncertainties are estimated from the use of the many-body technique. We investigate the dependence of the results on three different interactions, including chiral potentials, and we report on the $^4$He electric dipole polarizabi…

Enhanced nuclear Schiff moment in stable and metastable nuclei

2019

Nuclei with static intrinsic octupole deformation or a soft octupole vibrational mode lead to strongly enhanced collective nuclear Schiff? moments. Interaction between electrons and these Schiff moments produce enhanced time reversal (T) and parity (P) violating electric dipole moments (EDM) in atoms and molecules. Corresponding experiments may be used to test CP-violation theories predicting T,P-violating nuclear forces and to search for axions. Nuclear octupole deformations are predicted in many short lived isotopes. This paper investigates octupole deformations in stable and very long lifetime nuclei such as 153Eu, 235U, 237Np and 227Ac, which can ease atomic experiments substantially. T…

Separation of proton polarizabilities with the beam asymmetry of Compton scattering

2013

We propose to determine the magnetic dipole polarizability of the proton directly from the beam asymmetry of low-energy Compton scattering based on the fact that the leading non-Born contribution to the asymmetry is due to the magnetic polarizability alone; the electric polarizability cancels out. The beam asymmetry thus provides the simplest observable with a clean separation of the magnetic polarizability from the electric one. Introducing polarizabilities in a Lorentz-invariant fashion we compute the higher-order (recoil) effects of polarizabilities on beam asymmetry and show that these effects are most suppressed in forward kinematics. With the prospects of precision Compton experiments…

Lifetime measurements and shape coexistence inDy144

2010

The known level scheme of {sup 144}Dy has been extended and lifetime measurements have been made with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. Reduced transition probabilities and deformations have been determined for four low-lying transitions. These states form part of the first observed band crossing, giving information on the change in nuclear deformation resulting from the rearrangement of h{sub 11/2} protons in the nucleus. Two bands built upon excited 10{sup +} states have been assigned pi(h{sub 11/2}){sup 2} prolate and nu(h{sub 11/2}){sup -2} oblate configurations with tau=12(2)ps and 0.01<tau < or approx. 16ns, respectively. These long lifetimes are reasoned to be a result of sha…
