Gendered Use of the Hedge in Academic Discourse
2013
This paper discusses the distribution of hedges in academic texts in relation to the gender of the writer. The assumption prior to the analysis concerned possible differences in communicative practices between male and female writers reflected in the hedging of their propositions. The textual material covers 20 research articles, 10 written by male and 10 by female authors, published in the Journal of Linguistics in the years 2001–2010. Metadiscourse as “discourse about discourse” is connected with the communicative, social and personal involvement (Hyland 2000). Hedges, as indicators of the writer’s stance, should reveal characteristics of particular writing styles based on powerful or sup…

L’acqua, la roccia, la santa. Santuari femminili in Iran tra zoroastrismo e sciismo
2021
The topic of the paper is Bībī Šahrbānū’s Shia shrine near Ray (Iran) which shows a continuity of places of worship and ritual practices from the pre-Islamic period to the Islamic one. It was a place of worship dedicated originally to Anāhīd, the Zoroastrian goddess of water and fertility, protector of the royalty of the ancient Persian empires. The symbolic connector element is the water, sacred to the goddess Anāhīd, and important in the Shia worship of Bībī Šahrbānū, but also in the Zoroastrian sanctuaries near Yazd, such as that of Bānū-Pārs and Pīr-e Sabz.
The role of age and emotional valence in word recognition: an ex-gaussian analysis
2015

Introduction. Ecological immunology.
2009
12 pages; International audience; An organism's fitness is critically reliant on its immune system to provide protection against parasites and pathogens. The structure of even simple immune systems is surprisingly complex and clearly will have been moulded by the organism's ecology. The aim of this review and the theme issue is to examine the role of different ecological factors on the evolution of immunity. Here, we will provide a general framework of the field by contextualizing the main ecological factors, including interactions with parasites, other types of biotic as well as abiotic interactions, intraspecific selective constraints (life-history trade-offs, sexual selection) and popula…
Interactive evolution for cochlear implants fitting
2007
International audience; Cochlear implants are devices that become more and more sophisticated and adapted to the need of patients, but at the same time they become more and more difficult to parameterize. After a deaf patient has been surgically implanted, a specialised medical practitioner has to spend hours during months to precisely fit the implant to the patient. This process is a complex one implying two intertwined tasks: the practitioner has to tune the parameters of the device (optimisation) while the patient's brain needs to adapt to the new data he receives (learning). This paper presents a study that intends to make the implant more adaptable to environment (auditive ecology) and…
Spotlight on the Survival Processing Advantage': An FNIRS Study on Adaptive Memory
2015
International audience; In the present study, participants had to rate words for their relevance in an ancestral survival scenario (e.g., is bottle relevant in the fictious scenario of being stranded in the grasslands of a foreign land without basic supplies) and for their pleasantness (e.g., is bottle a pleasant word?). A distractor task lasting a few minutes followed and the participants were then tested on their recall of the words. We used fNIRS to bilaterally monitor the dorsolateral-prefrontal cortex (DLPFC, known to be involved in strategic encoding) during the processing of verbal material in these two deep encoding situations. At the behavioral level, we replicated the survival pro…
