Conditional connection explored: the case of Sicilian cusà

Abstract Stemming from a wh-question, the Sicilian marker cusà (cu sa ‘who knows’) expresses several epistemic meanings, which can also reach the realm of conditionality. The paper explores the discourse profile of cusà as it emerges from the analysis of diachronic data (from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) and present-day informal Sicilian, namely spoken Sicilian and present-day informal Sicilian as written by speakers on the web. The present work moves from a wider project on Italian as L2 competence of a group of foreign unaccompanied minors (MSNA) included in the literacy courses of the Scuola di Lingua Italiana per Stranieri dell’Università di Palermo (ItaStra). The article focuses on the analysis of a narrative speech corpus from native/non native face to face conversations. The narratives involve in particular the experience of migration. In this perspective, a special attention will be paid on the interaction turns, the discourse and pragmatic competence, and the use of linguistic constructions typical of story-telling (the use of conjunctions, verb tense conjugation and adverbs).
La crisi del dibattito pubblico nell'Italia contemporanea: il discorso populista

In this paper I discuss the current state of the so called populist political discourse in Italy. In particular my purpose is to shed light on some features of this kind of discourse in order to show the relation between language and policy in the discourse of populism. In this perspective I will follow the eight key points that, according to Diamanti & Lazar (2018), identify the actual populist movements, in order to verify if – and, in that case, which – linguistic traits characterize their discourse.The analysis will be focused on the semantic and argumentative aspects of the discourse of some of the most important political actors in contemporary Italy.

In this paper I discuss some features of Italian political discourse after the ending of the so called ‘berlusconismo’ (that is, the specific communicative style of Silvio Berlusconi, the leader of Italian right wing for almost two decades). In particular, I display the figure of Matteo Renzi, the current Italian Prime Minister and Secretary of PD, the most important Italian political party. In my work, I try to pinpoint the peculiarity of Renzi’s discourse strategies. In this vein, I suggest to use the notion of ‘disphasic discourse’, in order to underline the strong decrease of styles, genres and textual types variability characterizing his ways of communicating. Galdós was experiencing in his formation and in his first stage of production the narrative space of the press. The short story “El artículo de fondo” was published in 1871 in Revista de España, in 1879, in three installments in El Océano and reappears in 1889 in a collection of brief narrative texts that accompany his Torquemada en la hoguera. This study tries to focus, on the one hand, the variants introduced by the author, especially in the last edition, in order to evaluate the process of maturation of galdosian writing. On the discursive self-construction of expats, behavior and values

Considering that learners engage in the creation of new educational scenarios, often using digital media, travelogues have been analysed because they represent the digital development of a well-established genre within tourism discourse. This study focuses on the discursive construction of expats as 1) integrated tourist and 2) travelogue writers. I consider the occurrence of an Us as opposed/assimilated with a Them in the expression of values, behaviors and spaces by analyzing a corpus made up of articles taken from the most accessed travel webzines for expats at the time of the research. Dynamic aphasia in PSP: A deficit in generating a fluent sequence of novel thought

We report a patient (KAS) who presented with pure dynamic aphasia in the context of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). KAS had the hallmark propositional language impairment in the context of preserved naming, reading, repetition and comprehension skills. The severity of KAS's propositional language deficit was demonstrated to be comparable to other dynamic aphasic patients. Remarkably, despite virtually abolished propositional speech, KAS was unimpaired on word and sentence level generation tasks that required a single response.
