The Concept of Culture in Media Studies: A Critical Review of Academic Literature

This study examines the way culture has been researched in media studies and suggests how critical intercultural communication could contribute to the field. A literature review was conducted and articles (N=114) published in peer-reviewed journals between 2003 and 2013 were collected. Results show that studies dealing with media and culture do not systematically define the concept of culture. Findings also indicate that culture is oftentimes taken for granted instead of being problematized and addressed as a source of struggle. Advantages of using a critical intercultural communication framework to examine culture are discussed.

Parental and professional agency in terminations for fetal anomalies: analysis of Finnish women's accounts

This study explores the construction of parental and professional agency in the written accounts by women who have undergone selective abortion (N=8). The analysis of the data was based on qualitative, linguistic discourse analysis. The accounts indicate that the mothers themselves exhibited both strong and weak agency during the process of prenatal diagnosis. The role of the professionals was usually discussed in these accounts concerning only the phases of pregnancy when something out of ordinary had been detected. Bakalaura darbā tiek pētīti līdzekļi finanšu terminoloģijas mācīšanai. Teorētiskajā daļā apskatītas terminoloģijas un leksikas galvenās īpašības, mācīšanas metodes un aktivitātes, analizēts finanšu diskurss. Empīriskās daļas mērķis ir noskaidrot, kuras metodes un aktivitātes ir piemērotas finanšu terminoloģijas mācīšanai pieaugušajiem. Pētījuma dati tika iegūti analizējot novērojumus un studentu progresu. Aizvien vairāk aktualizētā sociālā atbildība un izpratne par vides jautājumiem ne tikai veido globālās izmaiņas sociālo tīklu lietotāju paradumos un uzvedībā, bet arī nosaka īpašu digitālo diskursu. Šis pētījums aplūko īpašības vārdu dažādību cilvēka-vides attiecību diskursā. Tamdēļ šī darba mērķis bija izpētīt īpašības vārdu tipus un to lietojumu ar vides jautājumiem saistītā saturā dažādās sociālo mediju platformās. Šī pētījuma mērķis bija analizēt lingvistiskās un paralingvistiskās iezīmes sociālo tīklu tīmekļa vietnēs Facebook un Twitter publicētajās aviokompāniju reklāmās. Entre la sintaxis y el discurso: el caso de 'a lo mejor' y 'al menos' en la conversación coloquial

This paper studies the Spanish forms a lo mejor (maybe) and al menos (at least) from a modular perspective, revisiting the categorization of a lo major and al menos according to the involved linguistic level and analyzing the relations between the adverbial uses of these forms and the discursive ones. Such relations show that the forms a lo mejor and al menos can be considered bicategorial lexical items, what is implemented by a corpus study based on data from spoken language.

“Travailler plus pour gagner plus” (“Work more to earn more”) was a slogan of right-wing candidate Nicolas Sarkozy during the 2007 French presidential election, which proposed exempting overtime working hours from taxation. In this article, I develop a cultural analysis of this political slogan. Its linguistic interest lies in its poetic and theatrical dimensions. The slogan is embedded in a rich cultural context: it refers to a doxa in right-wing discourse, according to which the “social model” should be replaced with a liberal model that also rescues the “value of work”.
