Secukinumab efficacy in the treatment of nail psoriasis: a case series

2018

Nail involvement is frequent in patients with psoriasis, especially those with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and can significantly impair quality of life (QoL). It is typically difficult to treat compared with skin lesions, although several conventional treatment options are available. The aim of this article is to describe our experience in the treatment of nail psoriasis with secukinumab in a case series. Fifteen patients (11 males and 4 females), with moderate-severe plaque psoriasis and nail psoriasis, eligible for systemic therapy, and received secukinumab. The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) and body surface area (BSA) assessed cutaneous severity. Nail Psoriasis Severity Index (…

Liver Fat Content in People with Pituitary Diseases: Influence of Serum IGF1 Levels

2017

AbstractNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is commonly associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. NAFLD is also seen in patients with endocrinopathies. However, the relationship between endocrine diseases and the development of NAFLD is not well known. In this study, we set out to determine whether liver fat content (LFC) was associated with IGF1 levels in people with pituitary diseases (PD). Eighty-nine patients with pituitary diseases and 74 healthy controls were included in this study. LFC was measured using MRI. Hepatic steatosis was defined as LFC>5.5%. Patients with PD were older, and had a higher BMI than healthy controls. LFC was significantly higher…

Epidemiological analysis of human fascioliasis in northeastern Punjab, Pakistan.

2016

A coprological study was performed to assess human fascioliasis in 7200 subjects inhabiting rural communities of localities close to the capital city of Lahore in the northeastern part of the very highly populated Punjab province, Pakistan, a country where human infection had never been reported before 2005. The analysis of 1200 subjects including 50 subjects/month throughout a two-year study in each of six localities surveyed provided an overall prevalence of 1.18%, with a range between 0.67% and 1.75% according to localities. Infection rates did not differ according to gender, excepting a higher rate in females (1.13% vs 0.77%) in one locality. Prevalences according to age groups proved t…

New insights in the neurological phenotype of aceruloplasminemia in Caucasian patients

2017

Abstract Introduction The diagnosis aceruloplasminemia is usually made in patients with advanced neurological manifestations of the disease. In these patients prognosis is poor, disabilities are severe and patients often die young. The aim of our study was to facilitate recognition of aceruloplasminemia at a disease stage at which treatment can positively influence outcome. Currently, the neurological phenotype of aceruloplasminemia has been mainly described in Japanese patients. This ‘classical’ phenotype consists of cerebellar ataxia, hyperkinetic movement disorders and cognitive decline. In this study we describe the spectrum of neurological disease in Caucasian patients. Methods Data on…

Primary prophylaxis of invasive fungal infections with posaconazole or itraconazole in patients with acute myeloid leukaemia or high-risk myelodyspla…

2017

This is an observational-retrospective study comparing the real-world outcomes associated with posaconazole vs. itraconazole as prophylaxis treatments. Two hundred and ninety-three patient admissions attributable to 174 patients were included in the study. Patients were treated with itraconazole (n = 114 admissions; 39%) or posaconazole (n = 179; 61%). Antifungal prophylaxis failure (APF) due to treatment-related adverse events (in 34 out of 293 patient admissions; 11.6%) was more frequent in the posaconazole group (6.1% vs. 15.1%; P = 0.024). There were 9 patient admissions for episodes of APF due to probable/proven breakthrough fungal infection (primary endpoint): 6 and 3 in the itraconaz…

Body Mass Index and Associated Clinical Variables in Patients with Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity.

2019

Background: Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity (NCWS) is still a largely undefined condition, due to the lack of a diagnostic marker. Few data are available about the nutritional characteristics of NCWS patients at diagnosis. Aims: To evaluate the proportion of NCWS patients who were underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese at diagnosis, and to search for possible correlations between their Body Mass Index (BMI) and other NCWS-related disease characteristics. Patients and Methods: The clinical charts of 145 NCWS patients (125 F, 20 M, mean age 37.1 &plusmn

Phylogenetic analysis of an epidemic outbreak of acute hepatitis C in HIV-infected patients by ultra-deep pyrosequencing.

2017

Abstract Background The incidence of acute hepatitis C (AHC) among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) has increased significantly in the last 10 years. Several studies point to a social and sexual network of HIV-positive MSM that extends internationally. Objectives The aim of our study was to investigate the dynamics of HCV transmission in an outbreak of AHC in HIV-infected MSM in Barcelona by ultra-deep pyrosequencing. Study design Between 2008 and 2013, 113 cases of AHC in HIV-infected MSM were diagnosed in the Infectious Diseases Unit, Hospital Clinic, Barcelona. Massive sequencing was performed using the Roche 454 GS Junior platform. To define possible transmission networks, m…

Surgical treatment of localized gingival recessions using coronally advanced flaps with or without subepithelial connective tissue graft.

2015

Background A coronally advanced flap with subepithelial connective tissue graft is the gold standard surgical treatment of gingival recessions, since it offers a higher probability of achieving complete root coverage compared with other techniques. However, optimum short- and middle-term clinical results have also been obtained with coronally advanced flaps alone. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the results obtained by the surgical treatment of localized gingival recessions using coronally advanced flaps with or without subepithelial connective tissue graft. Material and Methods The reduction of recession height was assessed, together with the gain in gingival attachment apical…

Urinary levels of sirtuin-1 associated with disease activity in lupus nephritis.

2017

Identifying new markers of disease flares in lupus nephritis (LN) that facilitate patient stratification and prognosis is important. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze whether urinary SIRT1 expression was altered in LN and whether SIRT1 values in urine could be valuable biomarker of disease activity. In a cohort study, urinary pellets from 40 patients diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were analyzed. Clinical measures of lupus activity were assessed. The expression of SIRT1 was quantified by quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) and immunoblot, then compared between patients with active lupus nephritis, in remission and healthy controls. Association with lupus activi…

The utility of measuring tear film break-up time for prescribing contact lenses.

2017

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the clinical value of non-invasive keratograph tear film breakup time (NIKBUT) in the assessment of pre-corneal and pre-lens tear film quality for prescribing contact lenses (CLs). Methods Forty-six subjects aged 25.5 ± 4.3 (mean ± standard deviation) years were recruited. Visual acuity (VA), anterior eye health checks and NIKBUT were evaluated. On the following day, subjects were fitted with a daily Silicon Hydrogel (SiHy) CL in one eye and a Hydrogel (Hy) CL in the other. After four hours one material for both eyes was chosen based on a qualitative analysis which included VA, CL fitting and comfort. Information about the first and the mean NIKBUT was then cont…
