Immunoreactivity using anti-ERG monoclonal antibodies in sarcomas is influenced by clone selection.
2014
The aim of the present study was to explore ERG immunoreactivity in a series of sarcomas, GIST and malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT), considering the not fully elucidated specificity and sensitivity of this antibody. Paraffin-embedded tissue microarrays from those tumors were stained with anti-ERG against the C-terminus [(EPR3864(2)] and N-terminus (Clone 9FY). EPR3864(2) was positive in almost all angiosarcomas, and MRT.GIST were positive in a large proportion of cases (38.4%), and more than half the synovial sarcomas (52.7%) revealed EPR3864(2) staining. Several chondrosarcomas, osteosarcomas, rhabdomyosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) presented EPR3864(2) expression in a l…
Abstract: Vascular occlusion has multiple, diverse clinical manifestations, some of which can have grave consequences for patients. It also has a wide variety of causes, including thrombi, which we recently addressed in part I of this review. In this second part, we look at additional causes o…
Diamondoid Nanostructures as sp 3 ‐Carbon‐Based Gas Sensors
2019
Diamondoids, sp3 -hybridized nanometer-sized diamond-like hydrocarbons (nanodiamonds), difunctionalized with hydroxy and primary phosphine oxide groups, enable the assembly of the first sp3 -C-based chemical sensors by vapor deposition. Both pristine nanodiamonds and palladium nanolayered composites can be used to detect toxic NO2 and NH3 gases. This carbon-based gas sensor technology allows reversible NO2 detection down to 50 ppb and NH3 detection at 25-100 ppm concentration with fast response and recovery processes at 100 °C. Reversible gas adsorption and detection is compatible with 50 % humidity conditions. Semiconducting p-type sensing properties are achieved from devices based on prim…
Selective Preparation of Diamondoid Phosphonates
2014
We present an effective sequence for the preparation of phosphonic acid derivatives of the diamondoids diamantane, triamantane, [121]tetramantane, and [1(2,3)4]pentamantane. The reactions of the corresponding diamondoid hydroxy derivatives with PCl3 in sulfuric or trifluoroacetic acid give mono- as well as didichlorophosphorylated diamondoids in high preparative yields.
Dynamic stabilization of the magnetic field surrounding the neutron electric dipole moment spectrometer at the Paul Scherrer Institute
2014
The Surrounding Field Compensation (SFC) system described in this work is installed around the four-layer Mu-metal magnetic shield of the neutron electric dipole moment spectrometer located at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The SFC system reduces the DC component of the external magnetic field by a factor of about 20. Within a control volume of approximately 2.5m x 2.5m x 3m disturbances of the magnetic field are attenuated by factors of 5 to 50 at a bandwidth from $10^{-3}$ Hz up to 0.5 Hz, which corresponds to integration times longer than several hundreds of seconds and represent the important timescale for the nEDM measurement. These shielding factors apply to random environmental noise f…
Informal physics teaching for a better society: a mooc-based and context-driven experience on learning radioactivity
2020
Abstract The general objective of teaching physics is to provide the learners with useful knowledge, in terms of both interdisciplinary scientific concepts and practical problem-solving skills. In this work, we report the experimental evidence, collected during a first year physics class in an upper secondary technical school, for the urgent necessity to adopt an informal and inquiry-based strategy to teach physics effectively, in particular to all those students living in degraded socio-economic environments. Within the pedagogical framework of “Learning by Doing” and the paradigm “Learning by Teaching”, we have explored the benefits of the students’ participation to an informal ICT-based …
A molecular study of Neophyllaphis varicolor (Hemiptera, Aphididae) in Costa Rica
2019
The genus Neophyllaphis (Takahashi) (Aphididae: Neophyllaphidinae) is composed of 18 species; however, in the Americas only nine species have been reported previously. A new species, Neophyllaphis varicolor Miller & Halbert, was described in 2014 in USA. Colonies resembling those of this new species have been observed in Costa Rica on Podocarpus spp. In order to determine if N. varicolor is also present in Costa Rica, we sampled Neophyllaphis colonies from Podocarpus falcatus and P. chinensis. Additionally, we sampled individuals from Podocarpus sp. in Spain and Vietnam. DNA of each sample was extracted and used to amplify and sequence the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and elongation…
Elaboration of NMT and GSM standards : from idea to market
2002
The focus of this study is on elaboration of NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) and GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) standards. It seeks to understand the standard-making process from a system's philosophy to market entry. The specific objectives of the study are 1) to reconstruct the original ideas of innovation, 2) to reconstruct standardization processes of NMT and GSM systems, 3) to reconstruct interplay and impact of key players during standardization process, and 4) to explain success of NMT and GSM standards. Analyzing processes of two successful mobile communication standard-making aims to reveal what were the specific Nordic standardization practices and principles, and what…
In an ideal world who should carry the can for wrongdoing business?
2018
Purpose This paper aims to analyze the main international rules against economic crime and to verify if Italian legislation provides for appropriate measures according to own needs at a national level. Design/methodology/approach The research uses a comparative approach by examining the existing legislations on a global, European and Italian level for finding analogies and differences between them. Findings The research has discovered a wide variation in the legislative interventions against economic crimes and in the kind of imposed sanctions. Nevertheless, there seems to be a trend toward penalties, with a high degree of uniformity between the different levels of protection. Research lim…
