Method for Computing Scattering Matrices

2021

Chapter 4 presents statement and justification of a method for approximate computing a waveguide scattering matrix. As an approximation to a row of such a matrix, a minimizer of a quadratic functional is suggested. To construct the functional, one has to solve a boundary value problem in a bounded domain obtained by cutting off the cylindrical ends of the waveguide at distance R. The minimizer tends to the scattering matrix row at exponential rate as R increases to infinity.

Pappus type theorems for motions along a submanifold

2004

Abstract We study the volumes volume( D ) of a domain D and volume( C ) of a hypersurface  C obtained by a motion along a submanifold P of a space form  M n λ . We show: (a) volume( D ) depends only on the second fundamental form of  P , whereas volume( C ) depends on all the i th fundamental forms of  P , (b) when the domain that we move D 0 has its q -centre of mass on  P , volume( D ) does not depend on the mean curvature of  P , (c) when D 0 is q -symmetric, volume( D ) depends only on the intrinsic curvature tensor of  P ; and (d) if the image of  P by the ln of the motion (in a sense which is well-defined) is not contained in a hyperplane of the Lie algebra of SO ( n − q − d ), and C …

UML-Based Metamodeling for Information System Engineering and Evolution

2003

In modelers’ practice metamodels have become the core of UML-based metamodeling environments: metamodels form the basis of application domain descriptions, and they are instantiated into models. In the context of information system engineering and interoperability, we have developped two operations on metamodels: metamodel integration and measure of semantical distance between metamodels. In this paper, we explore application of these operations to information systems’ evolution.

Spectral Approach to Equivalent Statistical Quadratization and Cubicization Methods for Nonlinear Oscillators

2003

Random vibrations of nonlinear systems subjected to Gaussian input are investigated by a technique based on statistical quadratization, and cubicization. In this context, and depending on the nature of the given nonlinearity, statistics of the stationary response are obtained via an equivalent system with a polynomial nonlinearity of either quadratic or cubic order, which can be solved by the Volterra series method. The Volterra series response is expanded in a trigonometric Fourier series over an adequately long interval T, and exact expressions are derived for the Fourier coefficients of the second- and third-order response in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the first-order, Gaussian…

CVBEM application to a novel potential function providing stress field and twist rotation at once

2013

AbstractIn this paper, complex variable boundary element method (CVBEM) is used for the solution of de Saint-Venant’s torsion problem in homogenous isotropic elastic beams with a generic cross section, considering a complex potential function related to the stress field. Generally, CVBEM, when used for torsion problems, leads to evaluation of the stress field divided by the twist rotation. The latter has been evaluated by performing a domain integral. In this paper, taking advantage of the aforementioned potential function, it is possible, by applying CVBEM, to evaluate the complete stress distribution and the twist rotation of the cross section and the torsional stiffness factor, performin…

The ∞-Eigenvalue Problem

1999

. The Euler‐Lagrange equation of the nonlinear Rayleigh quotient \( \left(\int_{\Omega}|\nabla u|^{p}\,dx\right) \bigg/ \left(\int_{\Omega}|u|^{p}\,dx\right)\) is \( -\div\left( |\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u \right)= \Lambda_{p}^{p} |u |^{p-2}u,\) where \(\Lambda_{p}^{p}\) is the minimum value of the quotient. The limit as \(p\to\infty\) of these equations is found to be \(\max \left\{ \Lambda_{\infty}-\frac{|\nabla u(x)|}{u(x)},\ \ \Delta_{\infty}u(x)\right\}=0,\) where the constant \(\Lambda_{\infty}=\lim_{p\to\infty}\Lambda_{p}\) is the reciprocal of the maximum of the distance to the boundary of the domain Ω.

Direct imaging of current-induced antiferromagnetic switching revealing a pure thermomagnetoelastic switching mechanism in NiO

2021

We unambiguously identify the origin of the current-induced magnetic switching of insulating antiferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers. Previously, different reorientations of the Neel order for the same current direction were reported for different device geometries and different switching mechanisms were proposed. Here, we combine concurrent electrical readout and optical imaging of the switching of antiferromagnetic domains with simulations of the current-induced temperature and strain gradients. By comparing the switching in specially engineered NiO/Pt device and pulsing geometries, we can rule out spin-orbit torque based mechanisms and identify a thermomagnetoelastic mechanism to dominate t…

User experience-based information retrieval from semistar data ontologies

2019

The time necessary for the doubling of medical knowledge is rapidly decreasing. In such circumstances, it is of utmost importance for the information retrieval process to be rapid, convenient and straightforward. However, it often lacks at least one of these properties. Several obstacles prohibit domain experts extracting knowledge from their databases without involving the third party in the form of IT professionals. The main limitation is usually the complexity of querying languages and tools. This paper proposes the approach of using a keywords-containing natural language for querying the database and exploiting the system that could automatically translate such queries to already existi…

Zonation by ammonites and foraminifers of the Vraconnian-Turonian interval: A comparison of the Boreal and Tethyan domains (NW Europe / Central Tunis…

2008

International audience; Since the end of the 19th century the interval comprising the uppermost Upper Albian, the Cenomamian, the Turonian and the basal Coniacian has been subdivided, first into ammonite zones, then, beginning in the middle of the 20th century, into zones of planktonic foraminifera. These two groups, one macrofossil, the other microfossil, are particularly effective for bio-chronostratigraphy thanks to their rapid rates of evolution. But differences in the faunal makeup between the Boreal domain (northwestern Europe) and the Tethyan domain (Mediterranean) have for a long time hindered precise correlation of the two domains. Today, in a time interval covering about 16 millio…
