MicroRNA expression profile in endometriosis: its relation to angiogenesis and fibrinolytic factors

2014

Study question Could an aberrant microRNA (miRNA) expression profile be responsible for the changes in the angiogenic and fibrinolytic states observed in endometriotic lesions? Summary answer This study revealed characteristic miRNA expression profiles associated with endometriosis in endometrial tissue and endometriotic lesions from the same patient and their correlation with the most important angiogenic and fibrinolytic factors. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN?: An important role for dysregulated miRNA expression in the pathogenesis of endometriosis is well documented. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of the relationship between angiogenic and fibrinolytic factors and mi…

Modifications in the production of cytokines and growth factors in drainage fluids following mesh implantation after incisional hernia repair

2005

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the production of some cytokines (interleukins [ILs]-6, -10, -1, and -1ra), vascular endothelial growth factor, and beta-fibroblast growth factor after polypropylene mesh implantation. Methods Twenty female patients were divided into 2 groups. In 1 group, hernia repair was performed with conventional sutures (CR), whereas in the other group polypropylene mesh (MR) was used. Growth factors and cytokines production was analyzed in wound drain fluids based on the amount produced during 24 hours. Results IL-1 increased substantially in MR patients on postoperative days 1 and 2. IL1-ra and IL-10 production was always significan…

Effects of Estrogen on Vascular Inflammation

2012

Objective— Our study aims to determine the role of time of menopause on vascular inflammation biomarkers and how it affects their modulation by estrogen and raloxifene in postmenopausal women. Methods and Results— Uterine arteries from 68 postmenopausal women were divided into 3 segments and cultured for 24 hours in tissue culture media containing 17β-estradiol (100 nmol/L), raloxifene (100 nmol/L), or vehicle. Assessment of arterial concentration of 13 inflammatory biomarkers was performed by multiplex immunobead-based assay. Aging per se has a positive correlation with the generation of several proinflammatory markers. Although short-term estradiol exposure correlates with lower expressi…

Inverse correlation between baseline inhibin B and FSH after stimulation with GnRH: a study of serum levels of inhibin A and B, pro alpha-C and activ…

2000

OBJECTIVE: Interest has focused recently on the influences of the polypeptide factors inhibin and activin on the selective regulation of the pituitary secretion of gonadotropins. DESIGN: Measurement of the concentrations of inhibin-related proteins in relation to the changes in pituitary gonadotropin (FSH, LH) parameters, after GnRH stimulation with a bolus injection of 100 microg gonadorelin, in 19 women with ovulatory disturbances. METHODS: Serum levels of inhibin A and B, activin A, and pro alpha-C were measured using sensitive ELISA kits. RESULTS: Within 60 min after GnRH stimulation, FSH values doubled from 5 to 10 mU/ml (P < 0.001). LH increased 12-fold from 2 to 24 mU/ml (P < 0…

Lower apoptosis rate in human cumulus cells after administration of recombinant luteinizing hormone to women undergoing ovarian stimulation for in vi…

2007

Objective: To investigate the effects of recombinant (r-) LH supplementation in “low responder” patients undergoing ovarian stimulation with r-FSH for an IVF program. The apoptosis rate in cumulus cells was used as an indicator of oocyte quality. Design: Comparison of the rate of DNA fragmentation and caspase-3 activity in cumulus cells in women stimulated with r-LH and r-FSH, versus patients treated with r-FSH alone (control). Setting: In vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory. Patient(s): Forty patients undergoing assisted fertilization programs treated with a GnRH agonist, or r-FSH treatment begun on day 3 of the cycle (control). In the r-LH group, from day 8 of gonadotropin stimulation, 1…

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-I regulation of interleukin (IL)-1b and IL-1 receptor antagonist expression in cultured human endometrial strom…

2008

Aim:  Human endometrium is an active site of cytokine production and action. Among these cytokines, the interleukin-1 (IL-1) system seems to be relevant to the embryonic implantation process. We have previously reported the production of GnRH-I by human blastocyst, as well as the presence of GnRH-I receptor in human endometrium. This suggests a close interaction between the immune and endocrine systems through these cytokine mediators in embryonic implantation. Methods:  To test the relevance of this interaction during embryonic implantation, we investigated GnRH-I regulation of IL-1b and IL-1ra mRNA and protein expression in human endometrial stromal cells using quantitative competitive po…

Subclinical hypothyroidism resulting from autoimmune thyroiditis in female patients with endogenous depression.

1994

Thyroid function and presence of thyroid autoantibodies were assessed in a group of 75 consecutive female patients with mood disturbances and in a group of 38 healthy women of similar age recruited as controls. Nine patients suffered from major (endogenous) depression and 66 from minor (neurotic) depression. The individual patients had normal values of circulating thyroid hormones. Nevertheless, endogenously depressed patients had total serum triiodothyronine (M±SE=1.49±0.09 nmol/l) and both total (83.9±4.3 nmol/l) and free serum thyroxine (13.9±1.1 pmol/l) lower than in the group of minor depressed and in the group of controls (p<0.01, in both comparison). The median value of serum thyrotr…

Possible link between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and oral lichen planus: a novel association found

2013

Objectives: Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as lichen planus has been associated to a number of disorders, generally of auto-immune origin. A novel possible association between oral lichen planus (OLP) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is here proposed on the basis of a cross-sectional survey. Materials and methods: One hundred and five unrelated OLP patients were considered. Diagnosis of HT was based on positive serum anti-TPO, anti-Tg, TSH levels and the typical ultrasound pattern of the thyroid gland. Results: In the present survey, the prevalence of HT in the OLP group was 14. 3 % whereas the prevalence of HT-related hypothyroidism in the general population was reported to be equal to 1 …

High-dose recombinant LH add-back strategy using high-dose GnRH antagonist is an innovative protocol compared with standard GnRH antagonist.

2011

High daily doses of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists during the follicular phase of ovarian stimulation were associated with low implantation rates. To test if this occurred because of profound pituitary suppression, the pituitary response was suppressed with a high-dose GnRH antagonist and recombinant LH (rLH) was added back to correct the implantation rate. An open-label, randomized, controlled, prospective clinical study in 60 patients undergoing IVF was performed. GnRH antagonist was initiated on day 6 of stimulation (2 mg/day) together with 375 IU rLH, and maintained until the day of HCG administration. Controls received 0.25 mg/day GnRH antagonist. Fluctuating LH con…
