Self-stabilizing Balls & Bins in Batches
2016
A fundamental problem in distributed computing is the distribution of requests to a set of uniform servers without a centralized controller. Classically, such problems are modelled as static balls into bins processes, where m balls (tasks) are to be distributed to n bins (servers). In a seminal work, [Azar et al.; JoC'99] proposed the sequential strategy Greedy[d] for n = m. When thrown, a ball queries the load of d random bins and is allocated to a least loaded of these. [Azar et al.; JoC'99] showed that d=2 yields an exponential improvement compared to d=1. [Berenbrink et al.; JoC'06] extended this to m ⇒ n, showing that the maximal load difference is independent of m for d=2 (in contrast…
Error bounds for a convexity-preserving interpolation and its limit function
2008
AbstractError bounds between a nonlinear interpolation and the limit function of its associated subdivision scheme are estimated. The bounds can be evaluated without recursive subdivision. We show that this interpolation is convexity preserving, as its associated subdivision scheme. Finally, some numerical experiments are presented.

More About the Musical Expertise of Musically Untrained Listeners
2003
Several behavioral experiments that were designed to compare the abilities of musicians and nonmusicians to process subtle changes in musical structures are surveyed. These experiments deal with different aspects of music perception including the processing of melodic and harmonic structures, the processing of large-scale structures, and implicit learning. In all these experiments, the so-called nonmusician listeners behaved in a very similar way as did highly trained students from music conservatories and music departments. This outcome suggests that when the experimental setting requires participants to process musical structures (in contrast to musical tones), the large audience of untra…
Aquapentachlororhenate(iv): a singular and promising building block for metal assembly
2015
The novel ReIV compound of formula PPh4[ReIVCl5(H2O)] (1) is the first example of a ReIV compound containing a coordinated water molecule which has been magnetostructurally studied.
The solution behavior of dopamine in the presence of mono and divalent cations: A thermodynamic investigation in different experimental conditions
2021
The interactions of dopamine [2-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)ethylamine, (Dop-)] with methylmercury(II) (CH3Hg+), magnesium(II), calcium(II), and tin(II) were studied in NaCl(aq) at different ionic strengths and temperatures. Different speciation models were obtained, mainly characterized by mononuclear species. Only for Sn2+ we observed the formation of binuclear complexes (M2L2 and M2LOH (charge omitted for simplicity)
Modification of Nanocrystalline WO3 with a Dicationic Perylene Bisimide: Applications to Molecular Level Solar Water Splitting
2015
[(N,N?-Bis(2-(trimethylammonium)ethylene) perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimide)(PF6)2] (1) was observed to spontaneously adsorb on nanocrystalline WO3 surfaces via aggregation/hydrophobic forces. Under visible irradiation (? > 435 nm), the excited state of 1 underwent oxidative quenching by electron injection (kinj > 108 s-1) to WO3, leaving a strongly positive hole (Eox ? 1.7 V vs SCE), which allows to drive demanding photo-oxidation reactions in photoelectrochemical cells (PECs). The casting of IrO2 nanoparticles (NPs), acting as water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) on the sensitized electrodes, led to a 4-fold enhancement in photoanodic current, consistent with hole transfer from …
Protein knot server: detection of knots in protein structures
2007
KNOTS (http://knots.mit.edu) is a web server that detects knots in protein structures. Several protein structures have been reported to contain intricate knots. The physiological role of knots and their effect on folding and evolution is an area of active research. The user submits a PDB id or uploads a 3D protein structure in PDB or mmCIF format. The current implementation of the server uses the Alexander polynomial to detect knots. The results of the analysis that are presented to the user are the location of the knot in the structure, the type of the knot and an interactive visualization of the knot. The results can also be downloaded and viewed offline. The server also maintains a regul…
Formal Concept Analysis of Musicians' Awareness for Musical Expression
2009
This paper proposes a logical framework that visualizes musicians' conceptual structures that are acquired in skill communication processes for musical expression as rhetoric. Generally, these conceptual structures are difficult to show difference between experts and beginners. So, we first carry out a theoretical analysis of musicians' awareness for musical expression using Channel theory and Formal Concept Analysis (FCA). Then, we propose a representation that shows the level of musicians' skills of musical expression. Finally, we discussed about hierarchy of musicians' conceptual structure.
Possibilities of Elementary Musical Lessons for Children Communication Skills
2012
Object of the paper - explore the possibilities of musical lesson for the child for communication skills. The paper was used for theoretical metod - analysis of scientific literature and empirical research method – pedagogical observations of individual and group lessons. Theoretically and practically explored and described possibilities of music lessons for communication skills. The author main conclusions of the study: 1. By participating in the musical play, children are encouraged musical hearing, physical coordination, language development, emotional and social development, communication and independence skills, etc. 2. When creating classesmodels to integrate all the musical creativit…
