Explaining Change Paths of Systems and Software Development Practices

This chapter discusses how systems development practices are shaped. Based on interviews conducted in ten development organizations and previous literature, we identify eight types of change paths in systems development practices: emergence, adoption, idealization, formalization, abandonment, informalization, entropy, and disobedience. We argue that the eight change path types provide an integrated theoretical framework on the study of how systems development practices change in organizations, projects, and among individual developers in a given context. We discuss how this framework complements existing theories and concepts of the contemporary literature on systems development.

Co-evolution of three mega-trends nurtures un-captured GDP – Uber's ride-sharing revolution

Uber used a disruptive business model driven by digital technology to trigger a ride-sharing revolution. The institutional sources of the company’s platform ecosystem architecture were analyzed to explain this revolutionary change. Both an empirical analysis of a co-existing development trajectory with taxis and institutional enablers that helped to create Uber’s platform ecosystem were analyzed. The analysis identified a correspondence with the “two-faced” nature of ICT that nurtures un-captured GDP. Defining user experience goals to guide the design of industrial systems

The key prerequisite for experience-driven design is to define what experience to design for. User experience (UX) goals concretise the intended experience. Based on our own case studies from industrial environments and a literature study, we propose five different approaches to acquiring insight and inspiration for UX goal setting: Brand, Theory, Empathy, Technology, and Vision. A modest but practical software process modeling technique for software process improvement

One of the main problems with software engineering is due to the difficulties in evaluating and improving our software processes, especially in the light of the fact that reuse depends on a process which supports it. Generally used approaches to the evaluation and improvement of software processes are based on the CMM, for example. In this paper we present a technique to improve software processes through modeling and evaluation. The presented technique is fairly easy to use, provides reasonably good results and requires only a fraction of resources required by CMM appraisals. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Development of the BCI Device Controlling C++ Software, Based on Existing Open Source Projects

The possibility of using the BCI open source code for building BCI controlled device, based on small AVR or ARM microcontrollers was considered. Some techniques to extract code snippets from other BCI projects were presented in the case of OpenViBE as the code donor. Problem with obtaining driver source codes for factory BCI devices has been pointed out.

Characterization of the parameters of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors for a loss model algorithm

Abstract The paper provides the results of a detailed experimental study on the variations of the characteristics of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, when load, speed and/or magnetization conditions vary. In particular, the characterization is carried out by assessing, for several working conditions, the motor parameters that influence its efficiency. From the knowledge of the variability of these parameters, it is possible to develop a dynamic model of the motor, which accurately describes its behaviour and allows estimating the power losses for whatever speed and load. Rare events and scaling properties in field-induced anomalous dynamics

We show that, in a broad class of continuous time random walks (CTRW), a small external field can turn diffusion from standard into anomalous. We illustrate our findings in a CTRW with trapping, a prototype of subdiffusion in disordered and glassy materials, and in the L\'evy walk process, which describes superdiffusion within inhomogeneous media. For both models, in the presence of an external field, rare events induce a singular behavior in the originally Gaussian displacements distribution, giving rise to power-law tails. Relaxation of Electron Spin during High-Field Transport in GaAs Bulk

A semiclassical Monte Carlo approach is adopted to study the multivalley spin depolarization of drifting electrons in a doped n-type GaAs bulk semiconductor, in a wide range of lattice temperature ($40<T_L<300$ K) and doping density ($10^{13}<n<10^{16}$cm$^{-3}$). The decay of the initial non-equilibrium spin polarization of the conduction electrons is investigated as a function of the amplitude of the driving static electric field, ranging between 0.1 and 6 kV/cm, by considering the spin dynamics of electrons in both the $\Gamma$ and the upper valleys of the semiconductor. Tests for Differentiation in Gene Expression Using a Data-Driven Order or Weights for Hypotheses

In the analysis of gene expression by microarrays there are usually few subjects, but high-dimensional data. By means of techniques, such as the theory of spherical tests or with suitable permutation tests, it is possible to sort the endpoints or to give weights to them according to specific criteria determined by the data while controlling the multiple type I error rate. The procedures developed so far are based on a sequential analysis of weighted p-values (corresponding to the endpoints), including the most extreme situation of weighting leading to a complete order of p-values.
