The archbishops of Palermo ove…

An original way to evaluate daily rainfall variability simulated by a regional climate model: the case of South African austral summer rainfall

2014

We discuss the value of a clustering approach as a tool for evaluating daily rainfall output from climate models. Ascendant hierarchical clustering is used to evaluate how well South African recurrent daily rainfall patterns are simulated during the austral summer (December to February 1970–1971 to 1998–1999). A set of 35-km regional climate simulations, run with the WRF model and driven by the ERA40 reanalysis, is chosen as a case study. Six recurrent patterns are identified and compared to the observed clusters obtained by applying the same methodology to 5352 daily rain gauge records. Two of the WRF clusters describe either a persistent and widespread dryness (65% of the days) or pattern…

Black and brown carbon over central Amazonia: long-term aerosol measurements at the ATTO site

2018

The Amazon rainforest is a sensitive ecosystem experiencing the combined pressures of progressing deforestation and climate change. Its atmospheric conditions oscillate between biogenic and biomass burning (BB) dominated states. The Amazon further represents one of the few remaining continental places where the atmosphere approaches pristine conditions during occasional wet season episodes. The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) has been established in central Amazonia to investigate the complex interactions between the rainforest ecosystem and the atmosphere. Physical and chemical aerosol properties have been analyzed continuously since 2012. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of t…

Assessments for the impact of mineral dust on the meningitis incidence in West Africa.

2013

9 pages; International audience; Recently, mineral dust has been suspected to be one of the important environmental risk factor for meningitis epidemics in West Africa. The current study is one of the first which relies on long-term robust aerosol measurements in the Sahel region to investigate the possible impact of mineral dust on meningitis cases (incidence). Sunphotometer measurements, which allow to derive aerosol and humidity parameters, i.e., aerosol optical thickness, Angström coefficient, and precipitable water, are combined with quantitative epidemiological data in Niger and Mali over the 2004-2009 AMMA (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis) program period. We analyse how th…

A new system for animal products traceability and authentication: Use of DNA analysis of natural tracers and example of application to dry cured hams

2010

A few DNA based approaches have been developed to trace animal products from the farm to the consumer “fork”. These approaches make use of the animal DNA that can be recovered during all steps of t...

Evaluation of yeasts from Ecuadorian chicha by their performance as starters for alcoholic fermentations in the food industry

2020

Yeasts involved in the spontaneous fermentation of traditional beverages like chicha (indigenous Andean beer) may have the potential to be used as starter cultures to improve the quality and microbiological safety of these products, but also as non-conventional alternatives to other food alcoholic fermentations. In this research, we isolated, identified and characterised yeast strains from four Ecuadorian chichas made by using four different raw materials: rice (RC), oat (OC), grape (GC) and a mixture of seven corn varieties (yamor, YC). Finally, 254 yeast isolates were obtained and identified by molecular methods. Eleven yeast genera and 16 yeast species were identified with relatively few…

Seismic stratigraphy of upper Quaternary shallow-water contourite drifts in the Gulf of Taranto (Ionian Sea, southern Italy)

2018

Abstract The occurrence of articulated seafloor morphology over continental shelf-upper slope environments, may result in a significant change in the patterns and intensity of basin-scale thermohaline circulation during eustatic sea-level fluctuations. These changes may cause, in turn, erosion, deposition and/or transport of sediments at the seafloor, to form shallow-water contourite drifts. Here we investigate this process in the NW sector of the Gulf of Taranto (Ionian Sea) during and following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), by integrating multibeam bathymetric data, ultra-high resolution seismic-reflection data and gravity core data. Sea level fall caused subaerial exposure of the summi…

Adaptive discontinuous evolution Galerkin method for dry atmospheric flow

2014

We present a new adaptive genuinely multidimensional method within the framework of the discontinuous Galerkin method. The discontinuous evolution Galerkin (DEG) method couples a discontinuous Galerkin formulation with approximate evolution operators. The latter are constructed using the bicharacteristics of multidimensional hyperbolic systems, such that all of the infinitely many directions of wave propagation are considered explicitly. In order to take into account multiscale phenomena that typically appear in atmospheric flows nonlinear fluxes are split into a linear part governing the acoustic and gravitational waves and a nonlinear part that models advection. Time integration is realiz…

The first part of this note is dedicated to the life, the works and the bibliographical "status quaestionis" of Baudry of Bourgueil, an important medieval latin poet who lived between the XI and XII centuries. The second part, instead, focuses on the recent book of Francesca SIVO, Follia d’amore. La “fabu…

Genetic analysis of early lamb survival in extensively reared lambs

2005

In sheep production, lamb survival is an important economic trait (Conington et al., 2004). Therefore, this trait has been studied by many scientists, especially in countries with an extensive husbandry system. In the United Kingdom, the number of lambs dying before weaning has been estimated ranging from 5 to 40% (Eales et al., 1983).
