Transition-Edge Sensors for Particle Induced X-ray Emission Measurements

2013

In this paper we present a new measurement setup, where a transitionedge sensor detector array is used to detect X-rays in particle induced X-ray emission measurements with a 2 MeV proton beam. Transition-edge sensors offer orders of magnitude improvement in energy resolution compared to conventional silicon or germanium detectors, making it possible to recognize spectral lines in materials analysis that have previously been impossible to resolve, and to get chemical information from the elements. Our sensors are cooled to the operation temperature (65 mK) with a cryogen-free adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator, which houses a specially designed X-ray snout that has a vacuum tight window…

A Metaheuristic Bandwidth Allocation Scheme for FiWi Networks Using Ant Colony Optimization

2015

Optical-wireless access networks constitute a quite attractive solution to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth requirements of end-users, offering significant benefits such as ubiquitous coverage in the wireless domain and huge bandwidth in the optical domain. However, converging optical and wireless networking technologies, with Passive Optical Networks (PONs) and 4G wireless standards, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) and the Long Term Evolution (LTE), entails major challenges that need to be addressed. In this context, designing an efficient and fair bandwidth distribution with Quality of Service (QoS) support is a difficult task due to the interdependen…

Accurate estimation of retinal vessel width using bagged decision trees and an extended multiresolution Hermite model.

2012

We present an algorithm estimating the width of retinal vessels in fundus camera images. The algorithm uses a novel parametric surface model of the cross-sectional intensities of vessels, and ensembles of bagged decision trees to estimate the local width from the parameters of the best-fit surface. We report comparative tests with REVIEW, currently the public database of reference for retinal width estimation, containing 16 images with 193 annotated vessel segments and 5066 profile points annotated manually by three independent experts. Comparative tests are reported also with our own set of 378 vessel widths selected sparsely in 38 images from the Tayside Scotland diabetic retinopathy scre…

Peak half-width plots to study the effect of organic solvents on the peak performance of basic drugs in micellar liquid chromatography.

2009

The addition of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) to hydro-organic mixtures of methanol, ethanol, propanol or acetonitrile with water yielded enhanced peak shape (i.e. increased efficiencies and symmetrical peaks) for a group of basic drugs (β-blockers) chromatographed with a Kromasil C18 column. The effect can be explained by the thin layer of surfactant associated to the hydrocarbon chain on the stationary phase in the presence of the organic solvents, which covers the free silanols on the siliceous support avoiding their interaction with the cationic basic drugs. These instead interact with the anionic head of the surfactant increasing their retention and allowing a mo…

First Multi-wavelength Campaign on the Gamma-ray-loud Active Galaxy IC 310

2017

The extragalactic VHE gamma-ray sky is rich in blazars. These are jetted active galactic nuclei viewed at a small angle to the line-of-sight. Only a handful of objects viewed at a larger angle are known so far to emit above 100 GeV. Multi-wavelength studies of such objects up to the highest energies provide new insights into the particle and radiation processes of active galactic nuclei. We report the results from the first multi-wavelength campaign observing the TeV detected nucleus of the active galaxy IC 310, whose jet is observed at a moderate viewing angle of 10 deg - 20 deg. The multi-instrument campaign was conducted between 2012 Nov. and 2013 Jan., and involved observations with MAG…

Perfusion MRI in normal and abnormal pituitary gland. A preliminary study.

1997

Perfusion MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the pituitary gland was performed in 20 healthy volunteers and 63 patients with various lesions involving the pituitary gland. All patients underwent sequential contrast-enhanced MRI using spoiled gradient recalled sequences with high temporal resolution (7 seconds). Four pituitary areas (pituitary stalk, posterior lobe, postero-superior, and antero-inferior adenohypophysis) were tested with a selected region of interest. Maximal contrast percentual variation was calculated. The timing of enhancement in normal patients matched perfectly with normal pituitary vascularization. Abnormal timing in pathological condition was investigated.

Canova divulgato tra «Können» e «Wollen» nell’opera di Alfred Gotthold Meyer

2014

This article is a critical introduction to the Italian translation of Meyer's Canova monograph (1898), it focuses on the editorial process and on the use of photography during this early stage of popular art history. Further consideration is given to Meyer's critical point of view in the context of the German fin-de-siècle art discourse (Burckhardt, Springer, Bode, Wölfflin, Hildebrand).

The Association between Peripheral Blood Cells and the Frailty Syndrome in Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases

2020

Background: Frailty syndrome is characterized by multisystem dysregulation frequently found in older individuals or even in younger patients with chronic disabling diseases such as cardiovascular diseases. Objective: To determine whether peripheral blood cell count, and its subpopulations, red blood cell and platelets, morphology and different ratios (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood distribution width-to-platelet ratio) are associated with cardiac frail patients, and through this to improve the prediction of frailty status in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Methods: An observational, retrospective, cohort study enrolling 179 patients with c…
