Suppression of extinction with TMS in humans: from healthy controls to patients.
2006
We review a series of studies exemplifying some applications of single-pulse and paired-transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the study of spatial attention and of its deficits. We will focus primarily on sensory extinction, the failure to consciously perceive a contralesional sensory stimulus only during bilateral stimulation of homologous surfaces. TMS studies in healthy controls show that it is possible either to interfere or modulate the excitability of the parietal cortex during sensory (i.e. tactile and visual) attentional tasks, thus reproducing a condition of virtual extinction. TMS studies in patients with unilateral (mainly right) brain damage show that the modulation of the …
alpha-Tocopherol, MDA-HNE and 8-OHdG levels in liver and heart mitochondria of adriamycin-treated rats fed with alcohol-free beer.
2008
Different studies indicate that oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage are key factors in different pathogenic process. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible protective role of alcohol-free beer on adriamycin-induced (ADR) heart and liver toxicity using biomarkers of oxidative stress. This effect was compared with the effect of alcohol beer intake and with a control group. Rats were randomly divided into six groups. The first group received no adriamycin, was fed with water and was regarded as the control group; the second group was injected with a ADR (two cycles of 5mg/kg); the third and fourth groups were fed with alcohol-free and beer for 21 days, respectively and the…
Influence d'une supplémentation en vitamines sur le rendement de la locomotion après une épreuve d'ultratrail
2006
International audience; Aim: The purpose of this study was to study changes in gross efficiency of locomotion after a prolonged trail running race (3000 m up and 300 m down). The second purpose was to investigate the effectiveness of supplementation in vitamin on gross efficiency variability.Materials and methods: Twenty-two well-trained endurance runners took part in this study. They had to perform four sub maximal tests before, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the race in order to estimate gross efficiency of locomotion and a maximal contraction test in the same period. They were divided in two groups either with supplementation (Isoxan Endurance ®) or without (placebo). Results: In both groups w…
Effects of Kaolin on Ophelimus maskelli (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in Laboratory and Nursery Experiments
2011
Although recent research has demonstrated that clays provide satisfactory control of some agricultural insect pests, the effect of clays on gall wasps that damage forest trees has not been previously reported. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the clay kaolin in the laboratory and in the field in reducing the damage caused by the eulophid Ophelimus maskelli (Ashmead) on seedlings of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus L'Hér.) species. In the laboratory, kaolin + wetting agent significantly reduced the percentage of infested leaves and the number of galls per leaf. In the nursery, gall number per leaf was not correlated with leaf area with kaolin + wetting agent but was rel…
The Management of Water Resources during Drought in Southern Italy
1999
The aim of this paper is to describe how one of the most severe droughts of the century in Sicily has brought awareness of the insufficiency of the water resources system supplying Palermo, due not only to the lack of timely infrastructural measures, but also of an appropriate decisional framework. The experienced shortage has directed research efforts to overcome this problem. As a matter of fact, the 1989–90 drought gave clear evidence of how an heavy hydrologic failure can result in a real crisis depending on the system which suffers from it. Unplanned urban expansion and increased demands levels, mixed with the lack of a drought-oriented water managenment, have produced considerable dis…
Stochastic modeling and prediction of catalytic converters degradation
2009
This paper proposes a stochastic model for describing the degradation process of catalytic converters over time, where the degradation is indirectly measured through the emission of complex hydrocarbons (HC) in legislated driving cycles. The proposed model is the superposition of two processes, the former being a dependent increments process which describes the actual degradation process, and the latter a white noise process which models the experimental errors. In particular, the proposed model assumes that the degradation growth in a small usage interval depends on the degradation level at the beginning of the interval, rather than on the age of the converter. The model has been applied t…
Wee1 inhibition potentiates Wip1-dependent p53-negative tumor cell death during chemotherapy
2016
AbstractInactivation of p53 found in more than half of human cancers is often associated with increased tumor resistance to anti-cancer therapy. We have previously shown that overexpression of the phosphatase Wip1 in p53-negative tumors sensitizes them to chemotherapeutic agents, while protecting normal tissues from the side effects of anti-cancer treatment. In this study, we decided to search for kinases that prevent Wip1-mediated sensitization of cancer cells, thereby interfering with efficacy of genotoxic anti-cancer drugs. To this end, we performed a flow cytometry-based screening in order to identify kinases that regulated the levels of γH2AX, which were used as readout. Another criter…
A thermodynamically consistent cohesive-frictional interface model for mixed mode delamination
2016
Abstract A new interface constitutive model based on damage mechanics and frictional plasticity is presented. The model is thermodynamically consistent, it is able to accurately reproduce arbitrary mixed mode debonding conditions and it is proved that the separation work is always bounded between the fracture energy in mode I and the fracture energy in mode II. Analytical results are given for proportional loading paths and for two non-proportional loading paths, confirming the correct behavior of the model for complex loading histories. Numerical and analytical solutions are compared for three classical delamination tests and frictional effects on 4ENF are also considered.
The interphase model applied to the analysis of masonry structures
2014
Abstract Masonry material presents a mechanical response strongly dependent on the static and kinematic phenomena occurring in the constituents and at their joints. At the mesoscopic level the interaction between the units is simulated by means of specific mechanical devices such as the zero thickness interface model where the contact tractions and the displacement discontinuities are the primary static and kinematic variables respectively. In many cases the joint response depends also on internal stresses and strains within the interface layer adjacent to the joint interfaces. The introduction of internal stresses and strains leads to the formulation of the interphase model, a sort of enha…
Traditional Architecture and seismic security. Earthquake in the Madonie inner mountain area of Sicily: damages and construction techniques
2017
