Extracting Structured Knowledge From Sensor Data for Hybrid Simulation

Obtaining continuous and detailed monitoring of indoor environments has today become viable, also thanks to the widespread availability of effective and flexible sensing technology; this paves the way for the design of practical Ambient Intelligence systems, and for their actual deployment in real-life contexts, which require advanced functionalities, such as for instance the automatic discovery of the activities carried on by users. Novel issues arise in this context; on one hand, it is important to reliably model the phenomena under observation even though, to this end, it is often necessary to craft a carefully designed prototype in order to test and fine-tune the theoretical models.

A tool to support the creation of datasets of tampered videos

Digital Video Forensics is getting a growing interest from the Multimedia research community, as the need for methods to validate the authenticity of a video content is increasing with the number of videos freely available to the digital users. Unlike Digital Image Forensics, to our knowledge, there are not standard datasets to test video forgery detection techniques. In this paper we present a new tool to support the users in creating datasets of tampered videos. We furthermore present our own dataset and we discuss some remarks about how to create forgeries difficult to be detected by an observer, to the naked eye.

Knowledge Discovery and Digital Cartography for the ALS (Linguistic Atlas of Sicily) Project

In this paper the latest developments of the ALS (Linguistic Atlas of Sicily) project are presented. The ALS project has the purpose to define methodologies and tools to allow researches in the socio-linguistic field. Different types of variables (both quantitative and qualitative) are involved. The whole framework is based on the definition of ontology-based applications for the creation, retrieval, manipulation and browsing of related data. SESAMO: An integrated framework for gathering, managing and sharing environmental data

ICT systems are widely adopted for environmental management, but existing solutions address limited tasks and compose a plethora of heterogeneous tools, which impose a great additional effort on the operators. This work presents SESAMO, a novel framework to provide the operators with a unique tool for gathering, managing and merging environmental and territorial data. SESAMO uses WSNs for providing pervasive monitoring of environmental phenomena and exploits a multi-tier infrastructure in order to integrate data coming from heterogeneous information sources.

The basic ideas of self-adaptive systems are not a novelty in computer science. There are plenty of systems that are able of monitoring their operative context to take run-time decisions. However, more recently a new research discipline is trying to provide a common framework for collecting theory, methods, middlewares, algorithms and tools for engineering such software systems. The aim is to collect and classify existing approaches, coming from many different research areas. Benford's Law for economic data reliability: The case of tourism flows in Sicily

This paper proposes a data science approach based on Benford's Law to analyse tourist flows – being tourism a relevant economic sector in Sicily. In particular, we are interested in detecting irregular patterns in the numerical data that may represent manipulations, inaccuracies or biases in the self-reported data from tourism organisations.
