Quality Model - Master Plan and DNA of an Information System

2012

Every theory has its surroundings and postulates. So has a theory about quality models, and it is better to make the main lines of these ideas explicit before presenting the theory itself. A human made information system (IS) as a technical artifact exists and operates always in the context of societies, organizations, personal lives etc. It is a tool used for gathering, storing, processing, presenting and exchanging (communication) information. These activities can be termed “information behavior” (Allen et al., 2011). Accordingly the context of an information system has a two-tiered structure (Figure 1). The inner tier, information behavior, is subordinate to the outer tier, human society…

Modelling Offices Through Discourse Analysis: A Comparison and Evaluation of SAMPO with OSSAD and ICN

1992

In a previous paper the importance of framing office communications in terms of discourse analysis was explored. 2 It also presented an approach based on speech acts and conversations to allow this framing to occur. The approach was termed SAMPO. In this paper, we continue the discussion on discourse analysis by comparing SAMPO with two prominent office modelling approaches, Information Control Nets (ICN) and OSSAD, and discuss its merits in modelling office communications.

Using store level scanner data to improve category management decisions: Developing positioning maps

2009

This paper provides evidence of the usefulness of aggregated point-of-sale scanner data to infer the positioning of competing brands, providing valuable information for category management and hence facilitating decision making. Specifically, the authors propose a methodology to study the internal market structure based on market share models with latent heterogeneity when only macro-level time series data (not individual choices) are available. The proposed approach assumes a multidimensional decomposition, latent in the preference structure that is implicit to these types of models. By empirically applying this approach, the authors (1) simultaneously identify both latent dimensions of co…

A practical framework for data management processes and their evaluation in population-based medical registries.

2013

We present a framework for data management processes in population-based medical registries. Existing guidelines lack the concreteness we deem necessary for them to be of practical use, especially concerning the establishment of new registries. Therefore, we propose adjustments and concretisations with regard to data quality, data privacy, data security and registry purposes.First, we separately elaborate on the issues to be included into the framework and present proposals for their improvements. Thereafter, we provide a framework for medical registries based on quasi-standard-operation procedures. The main result is a concise and scientifically based framework that tries to be both broad a…

Ontology-Guided Approach to Feature-Based Opinion Mining

2011

The boom of the Social Web has had a tremendous impact on a number of different research topics. In particular, the possibility to extract various kinds of added-value, informational elements from users' opinions has attracted researchers from the information retrieval and computational linguistics fields. However, current approaches to socalled opinion mining suffer from a series of drawbacks. In this paper we propose an innovative methodology for opinion mining that brings together traditional natural language processing techniques with sentimental analysis processes and Semantic Web technologies. The main goals of this methodology is to improve feature-based opinion mining by employing o…

A Newcomer's Guide to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems Community

2019

[EN] Welcome to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems community, PACMHCI/EICS journal, and annual conference! In this short article, we introduce newcomers to the field and to our community with an overview of what EICS is and how it positions with respect to other venues in Human-Computer Interaction, such as CHI, UIST, and IUI, highlighting its legacy and paying homage to past scientific events from which EICS emerged. We also take this opportunity to enumerate and exemplify scientific contributions to the field of Engineering Interactive Computing Systems, which we hope to guide researchers and practitioners towards making their future PACMHCI/EICS submissions successful an…

epiPATH: an information system for the storage and management of molecular epidemiology data from infectious pathogens.

2007

Abstract Background Most research scientists working in the fields of molecular epidemiology, population and evolutionary genetics are confronted with the management of large volumes of data. Moreover, the data used in studies of infectious diseases are complex and usually derive from different institutions such as hospitals or laboratories. Since no public database scheme incorporating clinical and epidemiological information about patients and molecular information about pathogens is currently available, we have developed an information system, composed by a main database and a web-based interface, which integrates both types of data and satisfies requirements of good organization, simple…

Interactions of pharmaceutical companies with world countries, cancers and rare diseases from Wikipedia network analysis

2019

AbstractUsing the English Wikipedia network of more than 5 million articles we analyze interactions and interlinks between the 34 largest pharmaceutical companies, 195 world countries, 47 rare renal diseases and 37 types of cancer. The recently developed algorithm using a reduced Google matrix (REGOMAX) allows us to take account both of direct Markov transitions between these articles and also of indirect transitions generated by the pathways between them via the global Wikipedia network. This approach therefore provides a compact description of interactions between these articles that allows us to determine the friendship networks between them, as well as the PageRank sensitivity of countr…

IoT-Based Home Monitoring: Supporting Practitioners' Assessment by Behavioral Analysis.

2019

This paper introduces technical solutions devised to support the Deployment Site - Regione Emilia Romagna (DS-RER) of the ACTIVAGE project. The ACTIVAGE project aims at promoting IoT (Internet of Things)-based solutions for Active and Healthy ageing. DS-RER focuses on improving continuity of care for older adults (65+) suffering from aftereffects of a stroke event. A Wireless Sensor Kit based on Wi-Fi connectivity was suitably engineered and realized to monitor behavioral aspects, possibly relevant to health and wellbeing assessment. This includes bed/rests patterns, toilet usage, room presence and many others. Besides hardware design and validation, cloud-based analytics services are intro…
