Economic and Technical Efficiency of Drinking Water Systems: An Empirical Approach for Spain
2009
The objective of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of drinking water systems. Efficient performance, both in technical and economic terms guarantee minimum water losses in the network and reduced tariffs for the users. An analytical benchmarking methodology based on non-radial measures considering water losses as undesirable output gives us an efficiency indicator for each input used in the water supply process. These indicators, obtained by means of mathematical programming techniques, are used to rank suppliers' activity. The relation between the efficiency in the activity of the companies and the establishment of different tariffs is also analyzed. An empirical application is carry…
Forecast of Study Success in the STEM Disciplines Based Solely on Academic Records
2020
We present an approach to the forecast of the study success in selected STEM disciplines (computer science, mathematics, physics, and meteorology), solely based on the academic record of a student so far, without access to demographic or socioeconomic data. The purpose of the analysis is to improve student counseling, which may be essential for finishing a study program in one of the above mentioned fields. Technically, we show the successful use of propositionalization on relational data from educational data mining, based on standard aggregates and basic LSTM-trained aggregates.
Liposomes as nonspecific nanocarriers for 5-Fluorouracil in the presence of cyclodextrins
2021
Abstract 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is one of anticancer drugs with broad activity. Due to its severe side effects, recent studies concentrate on new ways of directed 5-FU delivery and its release in ill tissue. One of selective carriers could be cyclodextrins and liposomes. The combination of novel methods, leading to formation of inclusion complexes (IC) between host molecule of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) or 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and 5-FU guest and its subsequent encapsulation in dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposomes is studied experimentally in the present work. Several methods are applied to proof the encapsulation of the analysed drug and its release over time at 37 …
Sténoses carotidiennes athéromateuses : causes fondamentales et conséquences cliniques
2014
The treatment of high-grade carotid stenosis is surgery combined with best medical treatment. We established since 2003, a prospective database including all patients hospitalized in our vascular surgery department for management of carotid stenosis. Since 2012, the clinical database was completed for the establishment of a biological database. We present here the method of setting up such a database, and the results of four original studies on the theme of "high-risk patient" for carotid surgery: the influence of renal function, of the delay between symptoms and surgery and of the contralateral carotid artery on outcome and the proposal of a prognostic score of intolerance to carotid clamp…
RepeatsDB in 2021: improved data and extended classification for protein tandem repeat structures
2020
The RepeatsDB database (URL: https://repeatsdb.org/) provides annotations and classification for protein tandem repeat structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). Protein tandem repeats are ubiquitous in all branches of the tree of life. The accumulation of solved repeat structures provides new possibilities for classification and detection, but also increasing the need for annotation. Here we present RepeatsDB 3.0, which addresses these challenges and presents an extended classification scheme. The major conceptual change compared to the previous version is the hierarchical classification combining top levels based solely on structural similarity (Class > Topology > Fold) with two new lev…
Repeatability in protein sequences
2019
Low complexity regions (LCRs) in protein sequences have special properties that are very different from those of globular proteins. The rules that define secondary structure elements do not apply when the distribution of amino acids becomes biased. While there is a tendency towards structural disorder in LCRs, various examples, and particularly homorepeats of single amino acids, suggest that very short repeats could adopt structures very difficult to predict. These structures are possibly variable and dependant on the context of intra- or inter-molecular interactions. In general, short repeats in LCRs can induce structure. This could explain the observation that very short (non-perfect) rep…
Quality of reporting in abstracts of RCTs published in emergency medicine journals: a protocol for a systematic survey of the literature
2017
Introduction The quality of reporting of abstracts of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in major general medical journals and in some category-specific journals was shown to be poor before the publication of the ConsolidatedStandards of ReportingTrials (CONSORT) extension for abstracts in 2008, and an improvement in the quality of reporting of abstracts was observed after its publication. The effect of the publication of the CONSORT extension for abstracts on the quality of reporting of RCTs in emergency medicine journals has not been studied. In this paper, we present the protocol of a systematic survey of the literature, aimed at assessing the quality of reporting in abstracts of RCTs p…
Advantages and limitations of using national administrative data on obstetric blood transfusions to estimate the frequency of obstetric hemorrhages
2013
International audience; BACKGROUND: Obstetric hemorrhages are a frequent cause of maternal death all over the world, but are not routinely monitored. Health systems administrative databases could be used for this purpose, but data quality needs to be assessed. OBJECTIVES: Using blood transfusion data recorded in administrative databases to estimate the frequency of obstetric hemorrhages. Research design A population-based study. Subjects Validation sub-sample: all mothers who gave birth in a French region in 2006-07 (35 123 pregnancies). Main study: all mothers who gave birth in France in 2006-07 (1 629 537 pregnancies). METHOD: Linkage and comparison of administrative data on blood transfu…
Designs and methods in school improvement research: a systematic review
2016
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on challenges faced by longitudinal quantitative analyses of school improvement processes and offers a systematic literature review of current papers that use longitudinal analyses. In this context, the authors assessed designs and methods that are used to analyze the relation between school improvement processes and student outcomes. Based on this the authors point out to what extent the papers consider different aspects of the complex nature of school improvement (e.g. multilevel structure, indirect and nonlinear effects, reciprocity). The choice of study designs and methods of analysis substantially determines which aspects of this complex…
