Changes in Oxidative Stress Index and Lipid Peroxidation Product in the Brain of Rats with Lesion of Central Dopaminergic System after Propofol Admin…

2019

Propofol is a commonly used intravenous anesthetic agent with antioxidant properties. However, the effect of propofol on oxidative stress index (OSI) and lipid peroxidation in Parkinson’s disease is still unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of propofol on OSI and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the selected brain regions of the rats with Parkinson’s disease (PD). 32 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: I- control group, II- group with PD, III-control group with propofol, IV-PD group with propofol. 60mg/kg of propofol was given to the 8-weeks-old rats intraperitoneally, and the selected parts of the rats’ brains (frontal cortex, striatum, thalamus and hippocampu…

High Lipid Content of Prey Fish and n−3 PUFA Peroxidation Impair the Thiamine Status of Feeding-Migrating Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) and Is Reflec…

2022

Signs of impaired thiamine (vitamin B1) status in feeding-migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were studied in three Baltic Sea areas, which differ in the proportion and nutritional composition of prey fish sprat (Sprattus sprattus) and herring (Clupea harengus). The concentration of n−3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n−3 PUFAs) increased in salmon with dietary lipids and n−3 PUFAs, and the hepatic peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration increased exponentially with increasing n−3 PUFA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n−3) concentration, whereas hepatic total thiamine concentration, a sensitive indicator of thiamine status, decreased with th…

Effects of different doses of doxepin on passive avoidance learning in rats

2013

Background: Studies have shown that Doxepin has anti-inflammatory effects and reduces oxidative stress. Due to the fact that other tricyclic antidepressants have been shown to have neuroprotective effects, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different doses of doxepin on passive avoidance learning in rats. Materials and Methods: Old male Wistar rats were used in this study. Doxepin was administered intraperitoneally (1, 5 and 10 mg/kg) for 21 days. Passive avoidance learning test was used for evaluation of learning and memory. Rats received foot electrical shock on fifteen day, and step through latencies were evaluated one week after the electrical shock in retention phase. Resul…

Ro 15-4513 Antagonizes Alcohol-Induced Sedation in Mice Through αβγ2-type GABAA Receptors

2011

Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) has many molecular targets in the nervous system, its potency at these sites being low compared with those of sedative drugs. This has made it difficult to discover ethanol’s binding site(s). There are two putative binding sites at gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A receptor subtypes for the proposed ethanol antagonist Ro 15-4513, the established gamma2 subunit-dependent benzodiazepine site and the recently reported delta subunit-dependent Ro 15-4513/ethanol binding site. Here, we aimed at clarifying the in vivo role of Ro 15-4513 at these two sites. We found that the antagonism of ethanol actions by Ro 15-4513 in wildtype mice was dependent on the test: an open f…

Contribution of benzodiazepines in dental care of patients with special needs.

2019

Background Conscious sedation in dental treatment of patients with special needs (PNEs) has the purpose of controlling events such as anxiety and fear, as well as promoting muscle relaxation and mastery of uncoordinated movements. Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are among the most used drugs due to their anxiolytic, hypnotic and sedative properties. The objective of this investigation is to demonstrate a study on the contribution of conscious sedation with BZD in PNEs. Material and Methods The study included 40 PNEs, non-collaborators, submitted to conscious oral sedation with Midazolam (0.5 mg/kg) for dental treatment, receiving vital signs monitoring in the pre, trans and postoperative periods. Re…

Atherogenic dyslipidemia and oxidative stress: a new look

2009

Although results from in vitro studies and clinical trials demonstrate strong associations between oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk, to date still no convincing data are available to suggest that treatment with antioxidants might reduce vascular events. Oxidative modifications of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) represent an early stage of atherosclerosis, and small, dense LDL are more susceptible to oxidation than larger, more buoyant particles. Oxidized LDL are independent predictors of subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis. Recent studies suggested that novel therapeutic strategies may take into account the removal of such particles from circulation. Future research is required …

Nutritional Status in Aging and Lung Disease

2016

Abstract Lung diseases exert a negative impact on nutritional status, especially among older patients where aging per se is already associated with relevant changes in nutrient intake, metabolism, and body composition. Both respiratory (increased respiratory work, hypoxia, and local oxidative stress and inflammation) and nonrespiratory (sarcopenia, reduced mitochondrial biogenesis and anabolic hormones, balance of orexigenic/anorexigenic neuropeptides, and systemic inflammation and oxidative stress) contribute to the association between lung diseases and malnutrition. For these reasons, nutritional assessments are of paramount importance in older patients with lung diseases. Current evidenc…
