2002

1,2-Di-(o-salicylaldiminophenylthio)ethane reacts with Co(II) salts to form a complex with oxidative cleavage of the C–S bond, to result in the formation of a Co(III) complex of the cleaved ligands.

Diastereoselective Michael addition of (S)-mandelic acid enolate to 2-arylidene-1,3-diketones: enantioselective diversity-oriented synthesis of dense…

2006

[EN] A diversity-oriented approach to enantiomerically pure densely substituted pyrazoles, ¿-aryl-¿-pyrazolylatrolactic acid and ¿-aryl-¿-pyrazolylacetophenones has been developed. The approach utilises the conjugated addition of the lithium enolate of the (2S,5S)-cis-1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde to several 2-arylidene-1,3-diketones, which proceeds readily to give the corresponding Michael adducts in good yields and diastereoselectivities. The cyclocondensation of the 1,3-diketone moieties present in Michael adducts with several hydrazines leads to enantiomerically pure densely substituted pyrazoles. Subsequent basic hydrolysis of the …

Synthesis of μ-C2S44− Cobalt Complexes by Activation of the 1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene-2,5-dione, and Electrochemical Study of [(Cp*Co)2(μ-C2S4)]

2002

The bimetallic complex [Cp(*)Co)2(μ-C2S4)] in which the two metal centres are linked by an ethylenetetrathiolate C2S44− unit, was synthesized in high yield by oxidative addition of 1,3,4,6 tetrathiapentalene-2,5-dione to [Cp(*)Co(CO)2]. The X-ray crystal structure of the intermediate product Cp*Co(dmid) (dmid2− = 4,5-disulfanyl-1,3-dithiol-2-onate) is presented. The electrochemical behaviour of the [(Cp*Co)2(μ-C2S4)] complex was studied in detail in the oxidative range. This study has shown that the nature of the product obtained after oxidation depends on the presence of complexing agent in the solution. The mechanism has been elucidated in a CH2Cl2 solution in the presence of P(OMe)3. In …

Enantioselective Synthesis of Unsymmetrical Benzoins from (S)-Mandelic Acid Enolate and Aromatic Aldehydes.

2004

The reaction of the lithium enolate of the 1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde with aromatic aldehydes proceeds readily to give the corresponding aldol products in good yields and diastereoselectivities. Subsequent hydroxyl protection, basic hydrolysis of the dioxolanone, oxidative decarboxylation of the α-hydroxyacid moiety, and hydroxyl deprotection provides chiral unsymmetrical benzoins with high enantiomeric excesses.

Inhibitory effects of N-acetylcysteine on the functional responses of human eosinophils in vitro

2007

Background Oxidative stress appears to be relevant in the pathogenesis of inflammation in allergic diseases like bronchial asthma. Eosinophils are oxidant-sensitive cells considered as key effectors in allergic inflammation. Objective The aim of this work was to study the effects of the clinically used antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) on the functional responses of human-isolated eosinophils. Methods Human eosinophils were purified from the blood of healthy donors by a magnetic bead separation system. The effects of NAC were investigated on the generation of reactive oxygen species (chemiluminescence and flow cytometry), Ca2+ signal (fluorimetry), intracellular glutathione (GSH; flow c…

Anti-inflammatory actions of the heme oxygenase-1 pathway.

2003

Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) is induced by oxidative or nitrosative stress, cytokines and other mediators produced during inflammatory processes, likely as part of a defence system in cells exposed to stress to provide a negative feedback for cell activation and the production of mediators, which could modulate the inflammatory response. HO-1 activity results in the inhibition of oxidative damage and apoptosis, with significant reductions in inflammatory events including edema, leukocyte adhesion and migration, and production of inflammatory cytokines. HO-1 is induced by nitric oxide (NO) in different biological systems and can control the increased production of this mediator observed in many i…

Responses of citrus plants to ozone: leaf biochemistry, antioxidant mechanisms and lipid peroxidation.

2006

The effects of ozone upon 3-year-old trees of Clementina mandarin (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.) cv. Marisol exposed for 12 months to ambient (10 nl l(-1)) and high (30 and 65 nl l(-1)) concentrations in open top chambers (OTCs) were investigated. The data showed that in leaves, ozone reduced total chlorophylls, carotenoid and carbohydrate concentration. and increased 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content and ethylene production. In treated plants, the ascorbate leaf pool was decreased, while lipid peroxidation and Solute leakaGe were significantly higher than in ozone-free controls. The data indicated that ozone triggered protective mechanisms against oxidative stress in c…

Chlorophyll a fluorescence, antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in tomato in response to ozone and benomyl

2001

Ozone is a widely distributed phytotoxic air pollutant and is known to reduce the yield of several important agricultural crops in Spain. However, benomyl has been found to lessen the adverse impact of ozone on plants. We studied the effects of ozone and benomyl on chlorophyll a fluorescence, antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxidation in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Tiny Tim) grown in open-top chambers in the field. Our results indicate that benomyl prevented the peroxidation of membrane lipids and increased protection of PSII from ozone. There was also a significant reduction in the activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase in ozone-exposed plants that had not b…
