Satisfacción de las mujeres con la experiencia del parto: validación de la Mackey Satisfaction Childbirth Rating Scale Women's satisfaction with the …

2012

Sonoporation, a redefined ultrasound modality as therapeutic aid: a review.

2011

Traditionally a diagnostic modality, ultrasound is emerging as a promising tool for non-invasive therapy, drug delivery, and gene therapy. The ultrasound is a mechanical wave energy generated in a medium as oscillating pressure in space and time at frequencies above 20 kHz, beyond the audible range. The ultrasound exposure generates bioeffects resulting in tissue heating, shear stress, and cavitation, which have been exploited for therapeutic applications. Ultrasound cavitation, enhanced by injected micro bubbles, perturbs cell membrane structures to cause sonoporation and increases the permeability to bioactive materials. Ultrasound-mediated gene delivery has been applied to heart, blood v…

Pig liver gene therapy by noninvasive interventionist catheterism

2006

The efficacy of noninvasive interventionist catheterism in large animals as an alternative to the hydrodynamic procedure, described for small animals, is evaluated. Basically, gene transfer is performed by implantation and fixation of a balloon catheter within the suprahepatic vein of anesthetized pigs, through the femoral vein. The catheter tip is identified by fluoroscopy, injecting a contrast solution that marks large or small hepatic territories. Animals were injected with a 100 ml pTG7101 plasmid solution (40 microg/ml), which contains the human alpha-1 antitrypsin gene, perfused at a rate of 7.5 ml/s and efficacy and toxicity of the procedure were evaluated. The results show: (i) the …

Evaluation of Galantamine transbuccal absorption by reconstituted human oral epithelium and porcine tissue as buccal mucosa models: Part I

2008

Over the last decade, interest in delivering drugs through buccal mucosa has increased. As a major limitation in buccal drug delivery could be the low permeability of the epithelium, the aim of this study was to evaluate the aptitude of galantamine, useful in Alzheimer's disease, to penetrate the buccal mucosa. The evaluation of the ability of galantamine to permeate through the buccal epithelium was investigated using two permeation models. Firstly, in vitro permeation experiments were carried out using reconstituted human oral non-keratinised epithelium and Transwell diffusion cells system. Results were validated by ex vivo experiments using porcine buccal mucosa as membrane and Franz typ…

How to Improve the Uterotomy Healing

1994

Abstract Suboptimal uterotomy healing following cesarean delivery or metroplastic operations may lead to considerable complications. New insights in the biology of wound healing and the availability of a variety of biologic response modifiers open the possibility to modulate the process of wound healing in order to gain clinical benefits. Can uterotomy healing be improved by local application of biosubstances? We developed an uterotomy model in the rat and measured the bursting pressure at defined times postwounding as a functional parameter of wound healing. In addition, the healing process was assessed by serial light microscopic histology. Uterotomy healing was investigated in the presen…

Risk assessment in ginecology and obstetrics in Sicily: an approach based on Wolff's Criteria

2013

Objectives To apply Wolff’s Criteria to hospital discharge records (HDR) in order to detect adverse events worthy of further study. Methods Gynecology and Obstetrics Units of three Sicilian hospitals were considered and HDR regarding ordinary and day hospital admissions in 2008 were collected. A matched case-control study was designed, by random selection of 10 controls at maximum for each case. Matching was performed on the variables age and speciality of admission (gynecology or obstetrics). Results Out of a total of 7011 HDR examined, 114 cases were identified with Wolff’s Criteria. Multivariate analysis confirmed a statistically significant association with the origin of admission, diag…

Emotion regulation in patients with somatic symptom and related disorders: A systematic review

2019

BackgroundSomatic symptoms and related disorders (SSD) are prevalent phenomena in the health-care system. Disturbances in emotion regulation (ER) are commonly observed in patients suffering from SSD.ObjectivesThis review aimed to examine ER processes that characterize SSD by a systematic analysis of the available empirical studies.Data sourcesPsycINFO and PubMed databases for the articles published between January 1985 and June 2018.Search terms"emotion/al regulation" or "affect regulation" and various forms of SSD.Study eligibility criteriaEmpirical studies that a) assigned adolescent or adult patients suffering from SSD based on a clinical diagnosis, and b) examined the relationship betwe…

Disease expression in women with hereditary angioedema

2008

Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Jun-11 OBJECTIVE: Fluctuations in sex hormones can trigger angioedema attacks in women with hereditary angioedema. Combined oral contraceptive therapies, as well as pregnancy, can induce severe attacks. The course of angioedema may be very variable in different women. STUDY DESIGN: Within the PREHAEAT project launched by the European Union, data on 150 postpubertal women with hereditary angioedema were collected in 8 countries, using a patient-based questionnaire. RESULTS: Puberty worsened the disease for 62%. Combined oral contraceptives worsened the disease for 79%, whereas progestogen-only pills improved it for 64%. During pregnancies, 38% of women had more attacks, …

The Impact of the International Cooperation On Familial Hypercholesterolemia Screening and Treatment: Results from the ScreenPro FH Project

2019

Purpose of Review Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is often perceived and described as underdiagnosed and undertreated, though effective treatment of FH is available. Owing to the mentioned facts, it is ever more imperative to screen and treat FH patients. Subsequent to the identification of patients, the project focuses on the improvement of their prognoses. The ScreenPro FH project was established as a functional international network for the diagnosis, screening, and treatment of FH. Individual countries were assigned goals, e.g., to define the actual situation and available treatment. With “central support,” more centers and countries participated in the project. Subsequently, individ…

Lost in Transition: A Systematic Review of Neonatal Electroencephalography in the Delivery Room—Are We Forgetting an Important Biomarker for Newborn …

2017

Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring is routine in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) for detection of seizures, neurological monitoring of infants following perinatal asphyxia, and increasingly, following preterm delivery. EEG monitoring is not routinely commenced in the delivery room (DR). Objectives: To determine the feasibility of recording neonatal EEG in the DR, and to assess its usefulness as a marker of neurological wellbeing during immediate newborn transition. Methods: We performed a systematic stepwise search of PubMed using the following terms: infant, newborns, neonate, delivery room, afterbirth, transition and electroencephalography. Only human studies describ…
