Introduction: Functional imaging studies have demonstrated the recruitment of additional neural resources as a possible mechanism to compensate for age and Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-related cerebral pathology, the efficacy of which is potentially modulated by underlying structural network connectivity. Additionally, structural network efficiency (SNE) is associated with intelligence across the lifespan, which is a known factor for resilience to cognitive decline. We hypothesized that SNE may be a surrogate of the physiological basis of resilience to cognitive decline in elderly persons without dementia and with age- and AD-related cerebral pathology. Methods: We included 85 cognitively normal…

36 Altered Prefrontal Cortex Responses in Older Adults with Subjective Memory Complaints and Dementia During Dual-Task Gait: An Fnirs Study

2019

Abstract In this study, we investigated the effects of walking during single-task and dual-task gait (STG and DTG) conditions, on left prefrontal cortex (LPFC) activation in older adults with subjective memory complaints (SMC) and Dementia. A total of 72 older adults (aged 65-94 yrs; 33 Healthy; 28 SMC; 11 Dementia) were recruited from the community and assisted living facilities. A portable 7m zeno walkway gait analysis mat was used to measure stride, velocity, length and duration during 4 passes of STG and DTG each. A portable single-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device (Portalite, Artinis Medical Systems) was placed over the LPFC to measure changes in oxyhaemoglob…

Effect of Organic Amendments on the Evolution of Soil Organic Matter in Soils Stressed by Intensive Agricultural Practices

2013

Losses of soil organic carbon often occur because of intensive agricultural practices that lead to removal of organic carbon following harvest production and to insufficient inputs. Organic amendments can be a very appropriate matrix for enhancing organic carbon content in very stressed agricultural soils. In general, they, enhancing soil organic matter, play an important role in environmental matrices due, for example, to their capacity in retaining water, in interacting with organic and inorganic pollutants, and in enhancing nutrient availability to plants. For this reason, the understanding of the mechanisms with which organic amendments interact with other chemicals in the environment i…

La formazione del caregiver: un’indagine esplorativa sui bisogni e le competenze di chi si prende cura

2021

In Italy, most people with dementia are looked after by an informal caregiver and, due to the care burden and the lack of systematic-institutional support, they risk deleterious effects on psycho-physical well-being and on relational functionality with the assisted. Considering the ontological dimension of care, it is necessary to deepen the pedagogical implications deriving from the needs of the caregiver of people with Alzheimer Disease. The survey carried out based on the administration of two tools: the semi-structured interview addressed to the associations that in the Sicilian territory deal with family support and the check-list for conducting focus groups with cargivers, allowed the…

CHARACTERIZATION OF THE SYNAPTIC PROTEOME IN NON-DEMENTED SUBJECTS WITH ALZHEIMER’S NEUROPATHOLOGY

Some individuals, here refereed to as Non-Demented with Alzheimer’s Neuropathology (NDAN), retain their congitive function despite the presence of amyloid plaques and tau tangles typical of symptomatic Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). In NDAN, unlike AD, toxic amyloid beta oligomers do not localize to the postsynaptic densities (PSDs). Synaptic resistance to amyloid beta in NDAN may thus enable these individuals to remain cognitively intact despite the AD-like pathology. The mechanim(s) responsible for this resistance remains unresolved and understanding such protective biological processes could reveal novel targets for the development of effective treatments for AD. The current work describes th…

EPIGENETIC REGULATION OF NEUROGENESIS IN NON-DEMENTED HUMANS WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE NEUROPATHOLOGY

This project was designed to investigate the role of neurogenesis and its epigenetic regulation by microRNA in the preservation of cognition against Alzheimer’s disease. This was accomplished by comparing by immunohistochemistry the capacity for neurogenesis in the subgranular zone of the hippocampus in 4 distinct populations of human subject’s tissue representing the full disease, intermediate cognitive decline, healthy controls, and a poorly characterized group who have all of the histopathological hallmarks of the full disease but are cognitively normal. To investigate the microRNAs of interest in the correct context, as microRNA expression can vary significantly by region, the granular …

Anesthetic management of a patient diagnosed with CADASIL (cerebral arteriopathy, autosomal dominant, with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopat…

2011

CADASIL (cerebral arteriopathy, autosomal dominant, with subcortical infarcts and leu-koencephalopathy) is an infrequent inherited disease that could have anesthetic implica-tions. However these have rarely been reported. We present a male patient previously diagnosed with CADASIL, who had suffered an ischemic vascular cerebral accident with a MRI compatible with leukoencephalopathy, and who was dependent for daily activities, and sustained dementia, mood alterations, apathy, and urine incontinence. He had famil-ial antecedents of psychiatric symptoms and ischemic stroke events in several relatives including his father, two brothers and one sister. He was scheduled for arthrodesis of the le…

A Novel Series of Acylhydrazones as Potential Anti-Candida Agents: Design, Synthesis, Biological Evaluation and In Silico Studies

2019

In the context of an increased incidence of invasive fungal diseases, there is an imperative need of new antifungal drugs with improved activity and safety profiles. A novel series of acylhydrazones bearing a 1,4-phenylene-bisthiazole scaffold was designed based on an analysis of structures known to possess anti-Candida activity obtained from a literature review. Nine final compounds were synthesized and evaluated in vitro for their inhibitory activity against various strains of Candida spp. The anti-Candida activity assay revealed that some of the new compounds are as active as fluconazole against most of the tested strains. A molecular docking study was conducted in order to evaluate the …
