C9ORF72 in a Large Series of Italian and Sardinian Familial and Sporadic ALS Patients (IN9-1.003)

Objective: To assess the frequency and the phenotype of a large series of Italian sALS and fALS with C9ORF72 repeat expansions. Background Recently we found that large expansions of hexanucleotide repeats (GGGGCC) in the first intron of the C9ORF72 gene, located in the chromosome 9p21, are related to familial and sporadic ALS cases(Renton et al, 2011). Design/Methods: We assessed 126 index fALS (106 Italians, 20 of Sardinians) and 601 sALS (485 Italians, 116 Sardinians), negative for other ALS-related genes mutations. Publisher Summary The Wallenberg syndrome or dorso-lateral medullary infarction is the most common vascular syndrome of the medulla oblongata. Its clinical features include an ipsilateral Horner's syndrome, an ipsilateral limb ataxia, and mostly an ipsilateral but sometimes also a contralateral or bilateral decrease of pain and temperature sensibility of the face. Binding studies and receptor autoradiography reveal the overall changes of acetylcholine receptors (AChR) in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s dementia cortices.2,5 A detailed account of these changes requires a study of neurochemical phenotype of individual neurons as basic elements of networks constituting the substrate of cortical functions.4 Examples will be given for cell-type specific AChR localization in normal and diseased human cerebral cortex.

An 80-year soil archive, the 42-plot experimental design at the INRA in Versailles (France), is used here to study long-term contamination by 137Cs atmospheric deposition and the fate of this radioisotope when associated with various agricultural practices: fallow land, KCl, NH4(NO3), superphosphate fertilizers, horse manure and lime amendments. The pertinence of a simple box model, where radiocaesium is supposed to move downward by convectional mechanisms, is checked using samples from control plots which had been neither amended, nor cultivated since 1928.
