Usage of filter arrays is becoming increasingly attractive for many research laboratories involved in determination of gene-expression profiles. However, analysis of numerous spots, representing genes or partial gene sequences (ESTs), is still tedious work involving the ordered analysis of vast amounts of numerical tabular data. Computer-aided system for morphometric mandibular index computation (Using dental panoramic radiographs)

Objective: We propose and validate a computer—aided system to measure three different mandibular indexes: cortical width, panoramic mandibular index and, mandibular alveolar bone resorption index. Study Design: Repeatability and reproducibility of the measurements are analyzed and compared to the manual estimation of the same indexes. Results: The proposed computerized system exhibits superior repeatability and reproducibility rates compared to standard manual methods. Moreover, the time required to perform the measurements using the proposed method is negligible compared to perform the measurements manually. After Golgi-Cajal mapped neural circuits, the discovery and mapping of the central monoamine neurons opened up for a new understanding of interneuronal communication by indicating that another form of communication exists. For instance, it was found that dopamine may be released as a prolactin inhibitory factor from the median eminence, indicating an alternative mode of dopamine communication in the brain. Sea urchin embryos as a model system for studying autophagy induced by cadmium stress

It is well known that sea urchin embryos are able to activate different defense strategies against stress. We previously demonstrated that cadmium treatment triggers the accumulation of metal in embryonic cells and the activation of defense systems depending on concentration and exposure time, through the synthesis of heat shock proteins and/or the initiation of apoptosis. Stress-70 proteins in marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis as biomarkers of environmental pollution: a field study.

In the present work we have investigated levels of stress-70 proteins in the gills of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis collected seasonally from subtidal rocky shores at 6 different sites of the Rovinj coastal area (Northern Adriatic, Croatia). 1-D analysis (SDS-PAGE) using monoclonal mouse antibodies anti-HSP70 detected two bands of stress-70 proteins, 70 and 72 kDa constitutively present during the year. 2-D analysis (IEF+SDS-PAGE) proved that the antibodies used detected HSP70 (pI 5.7–5.9) and HSP72 (pI 5.5–5.6). Isolation and Characterization of Epidermal DNA and RNA from Guinea Pig Skin

DNA and RNA were isolated from mammalian epidermis in a relatively small scale procedure. The high purity and native state of the DNA isolated is reflected by its molar absorptivity E (P), its thermal hyperchromicity and its hyperchromicity upon DNase treatment and by its sedimentation profile as well as by its profile in a cesium chloride density gradient. The very low content of protein and RNA, as well as the data of DNA determination, indicate that this method permits the isolation of a highly purified product. Timm-staining intensity is correlated with the density of Timm-positive presynaptic structures in the cerebral cortex of lizards

In cortical areas of the lizard, Podarcis hispanica, Timm staining reveals a distinct pattern of lamination. At the electron-microscope level, virtually all of the reaction product is located in the synaptic vesicles of Timm-positive boutons. Using linear-regression analysis, the area density of Timm-positive bouton profiles as well as the numerical and volume density of stained vesicles were found to be closely correlated with the light-microscopic densitometric values obtained for each Timm-positive cortical zone. We discuss the possibility of estimating stereological electron-microscopic data parameters from densitometric measurements at the light-microscope level.

Densitometry and parametric imaging with quality control

X-ray contrast image series of the myocardium were studied using the approaches of densitometry and parametric imaging accompanied by quality control. Contrast angiograms were digitized at six predefined phases of the heart cycle. For densitometry, regions of interest (ROIs) were defined semi-automatically for all phases. The resulting six densograms were summed up and weighted according to their quality determined by a measure. Previously validated parameters such as rise time were calculated. This hypothesis is further supported by the successful treatment of the disease with immunomodulatory drugs such as cyclosporin A. Imaging of metabolic bone disease

Osteoporosis is the most important metabolic bone disease, with a wide distribution among the elderly. It is characterized by low bone mass and micro architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. Identify bone weakening with an appropriate and accurate use of diagnostic imaging is of critical importance in the diagnosis and follow-up of osteoporotic patients. The aim of this review is to evaluate the detection rates of the different imaging modalities in the evaluation of bone strength, in the assessment of fracture risk and in the management of fragility fractures.
