Five-Coordinate Complexes [FeX(depe)2]BPh4, X = Cl, Br: Electronic Structure and Spin-Forbidden Reaction with N2
2002
The bonding of N(2) to the five-coordinate complexes [FeX(depe)(2)](+), X = Cl (1a) and Br (1b), has been investigated with the help of X-ray crystallography, spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Complexes 1a and 1b are found to have an XP(4) coordination that is intermediate between square-pyramidal and trigonal-bipyramidal. Mössbauer and optical absorption spectroscopy coupled with angular overlap model (AOM) calculations reveal that 1a and 1b have (3)B(1) ground states deriving from a (xz)(1)(z(2))(1) configuration. The zero-field splitting for this state is found to be 30-35 cm(-1). In contrast, the analogous dinitrogen complexes [FeX(N(2))(depe)(2)](+), X = Cl (2a) and Br (…
Magnetic coupling in discrete cyano-bridged Mn(III)-Fe(III) motifs: synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic properties and theoretical study.
2010
The preparation, crystal structures and magnetic properties of the heterobimetallic complexes of formula [Mn(III)(n-MeOsalen)(H(2)O)(mu-CN)Fe(III)(bpym)(CN)(3)]·mH(2)O with n = m = 3 (1) and n = 4 and m = 2 (2) [n-MeOsalen(2-) = N,N'-ethylenebis(n-methoxysalicylideneiminate) dianion and bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine] are reported. 1 and 2 are dinuclear neutral species where the cyano-bearing low-spin unit [Fe(III)(bpym)(CN)(4)](-) acts as a monodentate ligand towards the [Mn(III)(SB)(solv)(x)](+) entity (SB = tetradentate Schiff-base) through one of its four cyano groups. Adjacent heterobimetallic units are interlinked through hydrogen bonds involving the coordinated water molecule of one dinucl…
Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of cyanide- and phenolate-bridged [MIIINiII]2tetranuclear complexes (M = Fe and Cr)
2005
The binuclear complex NiII2L(H2O)2(ClO4)2 (1) and the neutral tetranuclear bimetallic compounds [{MIII(phen)(CN)4}2{NiII2L(H2O)2}]·2CH3CN with M = Fe (2) and Cr (3) [H2L = 11,23-dimethyl-3,7,15,19-tetraazatricyclo[19.3.1.19,13]hexacosa-2,7,9,11,13(26),14,19,21(25),22,24-decaene-25,26-diol] have been synthesized and the structures of 2 and 3 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. 2 and 3 are isostructural compounds whose structure is made up of centrosymmetric binuclear cations [Ni2(L)(H2O)2]2+ and two peripheral [M(phen)(CN)4]− anions [M = Fe (2) and Cr (3)] acting as monodentate ligands towards the nickel atoms through one of their four cyanide nitrogen atoms. The environment of t…
Weak interactions between trivalent pnictogen centers: computational analysis of bonding in dimers X3E...EX3 (E = pnictogen, X = halogen).
2009
The nature of weak interactions in dimers X(3)E...EX(3) (E = N-Bi, X = F-I) was investigated by wave function and density functional theory (DFT)-based methods. Out of the 20 systems studied, 10 are found to be bound at the CP-MP2 and LMP2 levels of theory. Detailed partition of the interaction energy into different components revealed that dispersion is the primary force holding the dimers together but there also exists an important ionic component whose contribution increases with increasing halogen size. As expected, standard density functionals fail to describe bonding in the studied systems. However, the performance of DFT methods can be easily improved via empirical dispersion correct…
A black-box approach to the construction of metal-radical multispin systems and analysis of their magnetic properties
2020
An interaction of M(hfac)2 (M = Mn or Ni) with N-(bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-3-oxido-1-oxyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)methylene)-2-methyl-propan-2-amine oxide (a nitronyl nitroxide diradical with theC[double bond, length as m-dash]N(O)-tert-Bu coupler) was investigated under various conditions. It was found that prolongation of reaction time caused transformation of the initial diradical into new diradicals with the uniqueC[double bond, length as m-dash]N-OH coupling unit and formation of binuclear Mn(ii) and Ni(ii) complexes, which were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The resulting binuclear heterospin complexes have a complicated magnetic structure with six paramagnetic cente…
Near-UV to red-emitting charged bis-cyclometallated iridium(iii) complexes for light-emitting electrochemical cells
2011
Herein we report a series of charged iridium complexes emitting from near-UV to red using carbene-based N^C: ancillary ligands. Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical properties of this series are described in detail together with X-ray crystal structures. Density Functional Theory calculations show that the emission originates from the cyclometallated main ligand, in contrast to commonly designed charged complexes using bidentate N^N ancillary ligands, where the emission originates from the ancillary N^N ligand. The radiative process of this series of compounds is characterized by relatively low photoluminescence quantum yields in solution that is ascribed to non-radiative deactivati…
Emission energy of azole-based ionic iridium(III) complexes: a theoretical study.
2014
A theoretical density functional theory study has been performed on different families of cationic cyclometallated Ir(III) complexes with the general formula [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)](+) and azole-based ligands. The goal was to investigate the effect that the number and position of the nitrogen atoms of the azole ring have on the electronic structure and emission wavelength of the complex. The increase in the number of nitrogen atoms changes the relative energy of the HOMO and LUMO levels and leads to a gradual shift in the emission wavelength that can be larger than 100 nm. The direction of the shift however depends on the ligand in which the azole ring is introduced. The emission shifts to bluer wa…
Tuning the photophysical properties of anti-B18H22: efficient intersystem crossing between excited singlet and triplet states in new 4,4'-(HS)2-anti-…
2013
The tuning of the photophysical properties of the highly fluorescent boron hydride cluster anti-B18H22 (1), by straightforward chemical substitution to produce 4,4'-(HS)2-anti-B18H20 (2), facilitates intersystem crossing from excited singlet states to a triplet manifold. This subsequently enhances O2((1)Δg) singlet oxygen production from a quantum yield of ΦΔ ∼ 0.008 in 1 to 0.59 in 2. This paper describes the synthesis and full structural characterization of the new compound 4,4'-(HS)2-anti-B18H20 (2) and uses UV-vis spectroscopy coupled with density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio computational studies to delineate and explain its photophysical properties.
Towards a better understanding of honeycomb alternating magnetic networks.
2015
Two new two-dimensional homometallic compounds {[M2(bpm)(ox)2]n·5nH2O} with M = Co(II) (1) and Zn(II) (2) and the mononuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni(bpm)2(ox)]·2H2O (3) [bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine and ox = oxalate] have been prepared and structurally characterized. 1 and 2 are isostructural compounds whose structures are made up of oxalate-bridged M(II) cations cross-linked by bis-bidentate bpm molecules to afford a honeycomb layered network extending in the crystallographic ab plane. The layers are eclipsed along the crystallographic c axis and show graphitic-like interactions between the bpm rings. The three-dimensional supramolecular network deriving from such interactions is characterized …
