Size dependence of the Josephson critical behavior in pyrolytic graphite TEM lamellae

2014

We have studied the transport characteristics of TEM lamellae of different widths obtained from a graphite sample with electrical contacts at the edges of the embedded interfaces. The temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as the current-voltage characteristics, are compatible with the existence of Josephson-coupled superconducting regions. The transition temperature at which the Josephson behavior sets in decreases with a decreasing interface width and vanishes for widths below 200 nm. This interface-size dependence provides an explanation for differences observed in the transport behavior of graphite-based samples with interfaces, and it appears to be related to the influence o…

Microwave Surface Resistance and Upper-Critical-Field Anisotropy of MgB2 Superconductor

2002

The field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance are investigated in two different samples of powdered MgB2. The experimental results can be justified in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account. Assuming the angular dependence of the upper critical field expected from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, we determine the anisotropy factor by fitting the experimental data of the field dependence of the microwave surface resistance. We show that the anisotropy factor is constant in a range of temperatures of about 3 K below Tc and it takes on di…

Magnetic hysteresis in the microwave surface resistance of Nb samples in the critical state

2006

We discuss the hysteretic behavior of the field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance in superconductors in the critical state. Measurements have been performed in a bulk sample of Nb and a powdered one at different values of the temperature. We discuss a model, based on the Coffey and Clem theory, in which we take into account the flux distribution inside the sample, due to the critical state. The experimental results are justified quantitatively in the framework of our model. We show that by fitting the experimental data it is possible to determine the value of the critical current density and its field dependence.

Cultural Institutes – Enablers of Sustainable Development

2015

Abstract The primary goal of this study is to examine the role of culture - as one of the most enduring, vital and long-lived components of sustainable development, with multifarious potential continuously explored and capitalized by individuals, communities or institutions. All definitions of the phrase sustainable development include culture as a sine-qua-non element that is also inextricably connected and interdependent with the other three pillars: economic, social and environmental. In this context of cultural centres worldwide, Confucius Institutes represent a successful and efficient managerial model by capitalizing on the most important resource of an organization: human capital.

Systems of quasilinear elliptic equations with dependence on the gradient via subsolution-supersolution method

2017

For the homogeneous Dirichlet problem involving a system of equations driven by \begin{document}$(p,q)$\end{document} -Laplacian operators and general gradient dependence we prove the existence of solutions in the ordered rectangle determined by a subsolution-supersolution. This extends the preceding results based on the method of subsolution-supersolution for systems of elliptic equations. Positive and negative solutions are obtained.

On the classification of visual patterns: systems analysis using detection experiments.

1977

Behavioral experiments are indispensable for the analysis of biological systems for cognition and recognition. When these are carried out as detection experiments three types of description can be used for the problem of visual pattern recognition which allow conclusions to be drawn on the operating function of the system. Provided that the signals to be recognized have additive noise superimposed on them, system description is possible: 1. on the basis on the probabilities of recognition and of mix-up,--2. through the analysis of the transformation of distribution densities of the noise,--3. by means of the measurable distances of the patterns from each other in feature space.-The analysis…

Altered processing of sensory stimuli in patients with migraine.

2014

Migraine is a cyclic disorder, in which functional and morphological brain changes fluctuate over time, culminating periodically in an attack. In the migrainous brain, temporal processing of external stimuli and sequential recruitment of neuronal networks are often dysfunctional. These changes reflect complex CNS dysfunction patterns. Assessment of multimodal evoked potentials and nociceptive reflex responses can reveal altered patterns of the brain's electrophysiological activity, thereby aiding our understanding of the pathophysiology of migraine. In this Review, we summarize the most important findings on temporal processing of evoked and reflex responses in migraine. Considering these d…

Interdependence between best team members and their teammates

2013

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine how, within a team, the value of their best member depends critically on the performance of the rest. Analysis of the interdependent team members complements the traditional focus of resource‐based‐view analyses of isolated resources.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used data from 584 National Basketball Association teams (30 teams collected over 21 seasons).FindingsThe authors find a positive relationship between best member performance and team performance that increases as the rest of the team members’ performance improves.Practical implicationsHaving team members with a high individual performance does not imply that the team will hav…

Croissance et convergence des pays de la zone CFA : une étude par les données de panel non stationnaires

2011

During the recent years, african countries in the CFA zone have experienced many economic changes on the one hand through the measures initiated by bilateral and multilateral donors and on the other hand through the economic and monetary integration policies. Thus, relying on the assumption that because of these interventions, the economic systems incorporate various phenomena such as structural change and economic interdependencies, we studied their major implications on growth, convergence and growth predictability. Emphasis is first placed on the major features of integration policies in a monetary union, while stressing the possible implications of such policies on the economic dynamics…
