OSL dating of sediments from the Gobi Desert, Southern Mongolia

2010

Abstract The present study focuses on the chronological relationship between alternating dune sand and silty water-lain sediments in the central part of the Khongoryn Els dune field in the Gobi Desert, Southern Mongolia. The 23 m high section evolved from the construction of a natural dam by west–east moving sand dunes and fluvial inundation by a river system from the mountain ranges in the south. To resolve the chronology of events, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was applied and from sedimentological and geochemical analysis the depositional processes could be characterised. Quartz OSL dating of these sediments is hindered by feldspar contamination. Thus, dating of coarse-g…

Systems tracts and depositional sequences in a carbonate setting: a study of continuous outcrops from platform to basin at the scale of seismic lines

1991

Abstract The application of sequence stratigraphy concepts to carbonates is feasible and this paper presents an example of its successful application. The continuity and lateral extent of outcropping sedimentary sections observed at the scale of a seismic line from platform to basin in the Southern Vercors Plateau (western Alps, France) confirm the validity of sequence stratigraphy concepts when applied to carbonate depositional systems. From the stratal patterns displayed in outcrop, we determined that carbonate lowstand systems tracts are major components in the basin, even in the deep pelagic realm. Transgressive and highstand systems tracts are very thin, a response to starvation. In co…

Surface Development of (As2S3)1–x (AgI)x Thin Films for Gas Sensor Applications

2011

Thin (As2S3)100−x(AgI)x (x = 0–40) films were deposited by thermal vacuum evaporation from the respective bulk glasses; their structure and morphology before and after illumination with light have been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As-deposited films show fractional evaporation and surface inhomogeneities but after illumination they become uniform on the surface and in the depth as revealed by SEM top-view and cross-section images. Mechanical parameters like stress and microhardness of as-prepared and illuminated films were also investigated. The results from the stress measurements show variation in both the sign and the magnitude of the values with increasing AgI content …

Neutronic and photonic analysis of the water-cooled Pb17Li test blanket module for ITER-FEAT

2002

Abstract Within the European Fusion Technology Program, the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) DEMO breeding blanket line was selected in 1995 as one of the two EU lines to be developed in the next decade, in particular with the aim of manufacturing a Test Blanket Module (TBM) to be implemented in ITER. This specific goal has been maintained also in ITER-FEAT program even if the general design parameters of the TBMs have reported some changes. This paper is focused on the investigation of the WCLL-TBM nuclear response in ITER-FEAT through detailed 3D-Monte Carlo neutronic and photonic analyses. A 3D heterogeneous model of the most recent design of the WCLL-TBM has been set-up simulating reali…

Direct Metal‐Free Chemical Vapor Deposition of Graphene Films on Insulating Substrates for Micro‐Supercapacitors with High Volumetric Capacitance

2019

Direct, metal‐free synthesis of graphene films on insulating substrates in a controlled manner is of great importance for applications in (opto)electronic and energy storage devices. Graphene films are fabricated on fused silica substrates without metal catalyst via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), using propionic acid as a carbon source. Film‐thickness is readily adjustable between 5 and 45 nm by changing the deposition time and flow rate of the precursor, displaying sheet resistance in the range of 0.27–1.86 kΩ□−1. The resulting graphene films are directly integrated into micro‐supercapacitors without film transfer or liquid‐phase processing, and demonstrate ultrahigh operation rates up t…

Preparation and characterization of (Hg0.7Mo0.3)Sr2(Ca0.7Y0.3)Cu2Ox and (Hg0.9Re0.1)Ba2CaCu2Oy superconducting films by laser ablation

2000

Abstract Oriented (Hg 0.7 Mo 0.3 )Sr 2 (Ca 0.7 Y 0.3 )Cu 2 O x and (Hg 0.9 Re 0.1 )Ba 2 CaCu 2 O y superconducting films were prepared on SrTiO 3 substrates using laser ablation and post-Hg-vapor annealing. Due to the stability of Mo 0.3 Sr 2 (Ca 0.7 Y 0.3 )Cu 2 O x and Re 0.1 Ba 2 CaCu 2 O y in air, no special handling was needed during the grinding, mixing and pressing of the precursor targets. The superconductivity of the films was characterized with the temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility ( χ - T ) and the resistance ( R - T ) while the crystallography was probed with x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Suspended single-electron transistors: Fabrication and measurement

2005

We have fabricated aluminum single-electron transistors in which the island is not in contact with the substrate. This new type of device, which can be called suspended single-electron transistor (SUSET), displayed well-defined I-V and dI/dV-V features typical for high-quality standard SET's.

Resistivity and irreversibility line of (Hg0.9Re0.1)Ba2CaCu2O6+δ HTS thin films

2003

Abstract High-quality epitaxial (Hg 0.9 Re 0.1 )Ba 2 CaCu 2 O 6+ δ HTS thin films were successfully prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of Hg-free precursor material on (1 0 0)-oriented SrTiO 3 substrates with subsequent Hg vapour annealing. (Hg 0.9 Re 0.1 )Ba 2 CaCu 2 O 6+ δ HTS thin films exhibit sharp superconducting transitions at T c ≈122 K. The electrical resistance for c -axis oriented HgRe-1212 films has been studied as a function of temperature and dc magnetic fields up to 10 T parallel to the crystallographic c -axis. The irreversibility line for the HgRe-1212 has been deduced from the data and investigated as a function of reduced temperature T / T c . The result of the irr…
