Measuring the Impact of a State’s Legal and Organizational Framework on Social Capital through System Dynamics Modeling

2015

The scientific community recognizes the critical effect of social capital on economic development; social capital benefits society with lower transaction costs and less opportunistic behavior among institutions, thus representing a key factor contributing to the quality of a country’s global competitiveness. At a macro level of analysis, social capital arises through formalized institutional relationships, structures and public policies constituting a state’s organizational and legal framework. Good public management, services and transparency foster in individuals their social commitment, honesty and a solid trust toward public institutions – all proxies of social capital. In contrast, bad…

Social media users’ online subjective well-being and fatigue: A network heterogeneity perspective

2021

Scholars have drawn increasing attention to the implications of the dark side of social media for users’ online subjective well-being (OSWB). We develop a research framework based on the limited-capacity model to examine the relationship between OSWB and social media fatigue. Moreover, we explore the associations between specific aspects related to network heterogeneity and social media fatigue for social media users in the United States of America (USA). Further, we examine the mediating effect of network heterogeneity on the association between OSWB and social media fatigue. We utilised a cross-sectional research design to collect data from Prolific Academic (N = 320) and analysed the dat…

ADI DESIGN INDEX 2017

2017

The role of controversy in engineering design

1997

Abstract To ensure the acceptance of technical systems and products in society, the crucial role of social controversy in technology development has to be more openly recognized. Many of the current acceptance problems of technical systems developed because the social controversy generated by the system under design was not sufficiently taken into account. Actively managed and organized controversy, on the other hand, could become an integral part of the engineering design process and the basis for a new underlying philosophy of design. Technical design in companies and technological organizations could be opened up to the active involvement of social actors usually excluded from it (like t…

Human Rights and the Inclusive Society

2012

Chapter 3 approaches disability as a reality that may impede the universality of human rights given that the rights of the group in question are “systematically violated”. To achieve an inclusive society in which everyone’s rights are implement, it is necessary to start with an adequate definition of the problem, referring to these individuals as “people with different capacities”, recognizing the place this difference has in society, and the role the State plays in the integration of this difference. To do this, their social visibility needs to be promoted as well as their accessibility to all spheres of social life, guaranteeing their participation in the labour and political fields, over…

Selection of Large Sub-Samples from the Continuous Sample of Working Lives Representative of the Benefits Provided by the Spanish Public Pension Syst…

2016

The Continuous Sample of Working Lives (CSWL) is a set of anonymized microdata with information about individuals taken from Spanish Social Security records. It provides very valuable information, which is used in many studies on labor economics and in the analysis of the Spanish public pension system. This article presents two major contributions: The first is an analysis of how representative CSWL is of the population of pensioners for the period 2005-2013. It is concluded that the CSWL does not follow the same distribution as the population with respect to some types of benefits, and that this happens in most waves. One of the reasons is that it is obtained by simple random sampling, so …

Apathy Towards the Integration of Usability Work: A Case of System Justification

2016

In this article we report from a case study of a software development organization and we study in particular the developers’ and product managers’ attitudes towards integrating usability work into software development. We offer explanations based on system justification theory illuminating what would-be integrators might be up against. The analysis shows how the developers only pay lip service to usability work and how they treat users superficially. It further shows how that leads to stereotyping of usability designers and users in order to preserve status quo, and how internalization of inequality between the developers and usability designers rationalizes the preservation of status quo.…

Editorial: Software language engineering

2008

Software languages play an important role in software development. Software languages are the artificial languages that are used to describe software systems at various abstraction levels. They are applied to describe requirements and designs for software, definitions of software architectures, and implementations of software systems. A huge variety of different technological spaces exist to describe languages: programming languages, software modeling languages, data modeling languages, domain-specific languages, ontology language, and others.

Customer-related social stressors and service providers' affective reactions

2012

Summary Previous research has shown that customer-related social stressors (CSS) have negative effects on service providers' long-term well-being. Little is known, however, about short-term and mid-term affective stress reactions and reciprocal effects between service providers' affect and CSS. The aim of this study was to expand extant research (i) by analyzing service providers' short-term (across a day) and mid-term (across 2 weeks) affective reactions to perceived CSS; (ii) by analyzing intraindividual as well as interindividual effects; and (iii) by investigating reciprocal effects of affective reactions and CSS that may eventually lead to psychosocial cycles. Our study employed a diar…

A museum system of design/craft for sustainable development in southern Italy

2018

Abstract: In this extended abstract we are going to explain an academic project entitled “THE SYSTEM OF TERRITORIAL DESIGN SYSTEMS. Cultural tourism, craftsmanship and design for the local development of the production enterprises of excellence in Southern Italy and Made in Italy”. It is based on the cooperation among designers and artisans in order to encourage the development of local craft- based production, by creating a REGIONAL MUSEUM SYSTEM OF DESIGN AND APPLIED ARTS in the five regions of Southern Italy. Then, the “SYSTEM OF THE SYSTEMS” is constituted of the five specific museum systems to be created in each region; these systems - especially in Campania and Sicily – can then repre…
