Automatic Extraction of Semantic Roles in Support Verb Constructions
2021
This paper deals with paraphrastic relations in Italian. In the following sentences: (a) Max strappò delle lacrime a Sara 'Max moved Sara to tears' and (b) Max fece piangere Sara 'Max made Sara cry', the verbs differ syntactically and semantically. Strappare 'tear/rip/wring' is transitive, fare ‘have/make’ is a causative, and piangere 'cry' is intransitive. Despite this, a translation of (a) as (b) is legitimate and therefore (a) is a paraphrase of (b). In theoretical linguistics this raises an issue concerning the relationship between strappare and fare/piangere in Italian, and that in English between move and make. In computational linguistics, can such paraphrases be obtained automatical…
Data Mining Approach for Detection of DDoS Attacks Utilizing SSL/TLS Protocol
2015
Denial of Service attacks remain one of the most serious threats to the Internet nowadays. In this study, we propose an algorithm for detection of Denial of Service attacks that utilize SSL/TLS protocol. These protocols encrypt the data of network connections on the application layer which makes it impossible to detect attackers activity based on the analysis of packet payload. For this reason, we concentrate on statistics that can be extracted from packet headers. Based on these statistics, we build a model of normal user behavior by using several data mining algorithms. Once the model has been built, it is used to detect DoS attacks. The proposed framework is tested on the data obtained w…
Determination of triamterene in urine by HPLC using fluorescence detection and column-switching
1994
A liquid chromatographic method incorporating column-switching and fluorimetric detection for the determination of triamterene in untreated urine, is described. The urine samples (5 μL) were directly introduced onto an Hypersil ODS-C18, 30 μm (20 mm×2.1 mm I.D.) pre-column. Polar urinary compounds were removed by flushing the pre-column with water for 1 min, and the analyte was then switched onto an HP-LiChrospher RP C18,5 μm (125 mm×4mm ID) analytical column using an acetonitrile/phosphate buffer gradient elution. Fluorescence detection was performed at 230 nm excitation and 430 nm emission wavelengths. The recovery of drug was 102±2% in the 0.10–20.0 μg/mL concentration range, the limit o…
Chromatographic determination of diuretics in urine samples using hybrid micellar mobile phases with fluorimetric detection
1998
Abstract A rapid and simple chromatographic procedure, that uses hybrid micellar mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), propanol and phosphate buffer at pH 3, and fluorimetric detection ( λ exc =270 nm, λ em =430 nm), is reported for the determination of mixtures of seven diuretics of diverse efficacy (amiloride, bendroflumethiazide, bumetanide, furosemide, hydroflumethiazide, piretanide and triamterene), in urine samples. The application of a sequential optimization procedure for the resolution of the mixtures of the diuretics was problematic. However, their separation was achieved through the use of an interpretive optimization procedure based on the accurate description of the r…
Advanced Virgo Status
2015
Abstract The detection of a gravitational wave signal in September 2015 by LIGO interferometers, announced jointly by LIGO collaboration and Virgo collaboration in February 2016, opened a new era in Astrophysics and brought to the whole community a new way to look at - or “listen” to - the Universe. In this regard, the next big step was the joint observation with at least three detectors at the same time. This configuration provides a twofold benefit: it increases the signal-to-noise ratio of the events by means of triple coincidence and allows a narrower pinpointing of GW sources, and, in turn, the search for Electromagnetic counterparts to GW signals. Advanced Virgo (AdV) is the second ge…
Rapid determination of sterols in vegetable oils by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns
2008
A method for the determination of sterols in vegetable oils by CEC with UV-Vis detection, using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns, has been developed. To prepare the columns, polymerization mixtures containing monomers of different hydrophobicities were tried. The influence of composition of polymerization mixture was optimized in terms of porogenic solvent, monomers/porogens and monomer/crosslinker ratios. The composition of the mobile phase was also studied. The optimum monolith was obtained with lauryl methacrylate monomer at 60:40% (wt:wt) lauryl methacrylate/ethylene dimethacrylate ratio and 60 wt% porogens with 20 wt% of 1,4-butanediol (12 wt% 1,4-butanediol in the polymeriz…
Observations of Kinematics and Thermodynamic Structure Surrounding a Convective Storm Cluster over a Low Mountain Range
2009
Abstract Measurements of a convective storm cluster in the northern Black Forest in southwest Germany have revealed the development of a warm and dry downdraft under its anvil cloud that had an inhibiting effect on the subsequent development of convection. These measurements were made on 12 July 2006 as part of the field campaign Prediction, Identification and Tracking of Convective Cells (PRINCE) during which a number of new measurement strategies were deployed. These included the collocation of a rotational Raman lidar and a Doppler lidar on the summit of the highest mountain in the region (1164 m MSL) as well as the deployment of teams carrying radiosondes to be released in the vicinity …
Multivariate optimization of the hollow fibre liquid phase microextraction of muscimol in human urine samples.
2016
Abstract A liquid phase microextraction based on hollow fibre followed by liquid chromatographic determination was developed for the extraction and quantitation of the hallucinogenic muscimol from urine samples. Method applicability on polar hallucinogens was also tested on two alkaloids, a psychedelic hallucinogen, tryptamine and a polar amino acid, tryptophan which exists in its charged state in the entire pH range. A multivariate design of experiments was used in which a half fractional factorial approach was applied to screen six factors (donor phase pH, acceptor phase HCl concentration, carrier composition, stirring rate, extraction time and salt content) for their extent of vitality i…
MMP-10/stromelysin-2 promotes invasion of head and neck cancer.
2011
BackgroundPeriostin, IFN-induced transmembrane protein 1 (IFITM1) and Wingless-type MMTV integration site family, member 5B (Wnt-5b) were previously identified as the invasion promoted genes of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) by comparing the gene expression profiles between parent and a highly invasive clone. We have previously reported that Periostin and IFITM1 promoted the invasion of HNSCC cells. Here we demonstrated that Wnt-5b overexpression promoted the invasion of HNSCC cells. Moreover, stromelysin-2 (matrix metalloproteinase-10; MMP-10) was identified as a common up-regulated gene among Periostin, IFITM1 and Wnt-5b overexpressing HNSCC cells by using microarray data s…
Radiometric Partial Discharge Detection: A Review
2023
One of the most common failures or breakdowns that can occur in high-voltage (HV) equipment is due to partial discharges (PDs). This occurs as a result of inadequate insulation, aging, harsh environmental effects, or manufacturing flaws. PD detection and recognition methods have gained growing attention and have seen great progress in the past decades. Radiometric methods are one of the most investigated detection approaches due to their immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and their capabilities to detect and locate PD activities in different applications such as transformers, cables, etc. Several review articles have been published to classify and categorize these works. Nonethe…
