Deweyan Democracy, Neoliberalism, and Action Research

2019

This article aims to establish a line of continuity between John Dewey's democratic and educational ideals and the practice of action research, to justify that the latter affords an adequate means to enact Dewey's ideals against the destructive challenges that neoliberalism poses to democracy today. This aim involves three ideas that will be developed in three corresponding sections. After the Introduction, the first section analyzes at length the main tenets of Dewey's thoughts about democracy by emphasizing the role of the educational dimension. The article then approaches neoliberalism by focusing on one of its variants, New Public Management, and explains why the latter implies a direct…

La religione laica di John Dewey e di Aldo Capitini

2021

The contribution proposes an analysis on a subject that, today, appears more controversial than ever and full of ideas for reflection for the pedagogical world: the religion. This will be done through a reference to the theoretical contribution of John Dewey, who, presenting the terminology difference between the word "religion" and "religiousness", has disseminated the idea of a secular religion, whose values, transcending the boundaries of multiple religious confessions, can be fulfilled by all, contributing to the realization of democratic society. The deweyan approach will be compared to that of Aldo Capitini who, in a similar way to the American thinker, has promoted a form of secular …

Study and optimization of freeze-drying cycles of a model probiotic strain

2018

This work is based on the experimental study of the freeze-drying process to understand the impact of numerous factors on the survival rates of a model probiotic strain of Lactobacillus casei type. With the aim to find out if cell density in the matrix and survival rates are linked, we have studied the location of the cells after freeze drying inside a porous  matrix composed of a lactose basis with a polymer, the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in various amounts. The best survival rate were obtained at slow freezing rate for a formulation containing 5% (m/V) of lactose and 5% (m/V) of PVP. Keywords: Freeze-Drying; Freezing; Probiotics; L. Casei ATCC 393

Particle transport in recirculated liquid metal flows

2008

PurposeAims to present recent activities in numerical modeling of turbulent transport processes in induction crucible furnace.Design/methodology/approach3D large eddy simulation (LES) method was applied for fluid flow modeling in a cylindrical container and transport of 30,000 particles was investigated with Lagrangian approach.FindingsParticle accumulation near the side crucible boundary is determined mainly by the ρp/ρ ratio and according to the presented results. Particle settling velocity is of the same order as characteristic melt flow velocity. Particle concentration homogenization time depends on the internal flow regime. Separate particle tracks introduce very intensive mass exchang…

Numerical and experimental study of liquid metal stirring by rotating permanent magnets

2018

In this work, we study liquid gallium stirring by rotating permanent magnets. We demonstrate possibility of easily creating different flow patterns by rotating permanent magnets, which can be industrially important for controlling heat and mass transfer processes in the system. Unlike the typical approach of simulating magnet rotation as a transient problem and time-averaging the Lorentz forces, we solve the magnet rotation as a harmonic (frequency domain) problem, which leads to forces equal to time-averaged ones and decreases the simulation time considerably. Numerical results are validated using qualitative flow structure results from the neutron radiography visualization of tracer parti…

Membrane bioreactors sludge: From production to disposal

2020

Abstract This chapter reviews the MBR activated sludge from production to disposal. Starting from sludge characterization, the chapter first presents the features of MBR sludge (morphology and EPS chemical composition), also in terms of differences with the activated sludge from conventional activated sludge plants. Sludge dewaterability is then discussed, focusing on the differences between aerobically and anaerobically digested sludge. An analysis of the costs related to MBR sludge treatment and disposal also is presented in order to provide a framework for a sustainable MBR sludge management.

The sludge dewaterability in membrane bioreactors

2016

The influence of the sludge origin on the dewaterability features has been investigated by comparing the experimental results of six membrane bioreactor pilot plants with different configurations. The capillary suction time (CST) and the specific resistance to filtration (SRF), identified as representative of sludge dewaterability features, were measured. The results were related to operational parameters, such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial product (SMP), influent salinity and hydrocarbon, in order to elucidate the influence exerted on the dewaterability. Furthermore, the effect of biofilm and suspended biomass was also investigated. The results showed th…

Knee-clicks and visual traits indicate fighting ability in eland antelopes: multiple messages and back-up signals

2008

Abstract Background Given the costs of signalling, why do males often advertise their fighting ability to rivals using several signals rather than just one? Multiple signalling theories have developed largely in studies of sexual signals, and less is known about their applicability to intra-sexual communication. We here investigate the evolutionary basis for the intricate agonistic signalling system in eland antelopes, paying particular attention to the evolutionary phenomenon of loud knee-clicking. Results A principal components analysis separated seven male traits into three groups. The dominant frequency of the knee-clicking sound honestly indicated body size, a main determinant of fight…
