Quantized current source with mesoscopic feedback

We study a mesoscopic circuit of two quantized current sources, realized by nonadiabatic single-electron pumps connected in series with a small micron-sized island in between. We find that quantum transport through the second pump can be locked onto the quantized current of the first one by a feedback due to charging of the mesoscopic island. This is confirmed by a measurement of the charge variation on the island using a nearby charge detector. Finally, the charge feedback signal clearly evidences loading into excited states of the dynamic quantum dot during single-electron pump operation. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Light trapping by plasmonic nanoparticles

Abstract Metallic nanoparticles sustaining localized surface plasmon resonances are of great interest for enhancing light trapping in thin film photovoltaics. In this chapter, we explore the correlation between the structural and optical properties of self-assembled silver nanostructures fabricated by a solid-state dewetting process on various substrates relevant for silicon photovoltaics and later integrated into plasmonic back reflectors. Frank H. Knight, pragmatism, and American institutionalism: A note

This note deals with the debated question of whether, and to what extent, Frank Knight's epistemology was consistent with the general philosophy of American pragmatism. First, in accord with recent interpretations, I provide new evidence illustrating that Knight's views on science, knowledge and related philosophical topics present some important similarities with the pragmatic tradition. Second, I attempt to demonstrate that Knight's unsympathetic reading of Dewy and pragmatism was, to a relevant extent, a consequence of his aversion to the so-called scientific wing of American interwar institutionalism. © 2009 Taylor & Francis.

A parts-per-billion measurement of the antiproton magnetic moment

The magnetic moment of the antiproton is measured at the parts-per-billion level, improving on previous measurements by a factor of about 350. Comparing the fundamental properties of normal-matter particles with their antimatter counterparts tests charge–parity–time (CPT) invariance, which is an important part of the standard model of particle physics. Many properties have been measured to the parts-per-billion level of uncertainty, but the magnetic moment of the antiproton has not. The CoSMOS L-band experiment in Southeast Australia

The CoSMOS (Campaign for validating the Operation of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission) campaign was conducted during November of 2005 in the Goulburn River Catchment, in SE Australia. The main objective of CoSMOS was to obtain a series of L-band measurements from the air in order to validate the L-band emission model that will be used by the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) ground segment processor. When, why, and how to perform wire-based antegrade dissection and reentry technique

Antegrade dissection and reentry (ADR) refers to an attempt to cross a coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesion through wire and/or equipment passage in the subintimal space followed by reentry to the distal true lumen. From the original subintimal tracking and reentry (STAR) technique description by Colombo in 2005, refinement of the technique, improved characteristics of the microcatheters and wires, and better understanding of subadventitial vessel trauma have led to higher success rates, lower complications rates, and improved long-term outcomes. In this chapter, we discuss the technique, its outcomes, and limitations.

PowDery mildew caused by Podosphaera pannosa (Wallr. Fr.) De Bary on roses in greenhouse cultivation is usually controlled by chemical products. Aiming to lower the use of chemical treatments, in vitro and in planta assays were carried out using some natural products. The inhibitory effect of essential oils extracted from oregano inflorescences (Origanum heracleoticum L.) and cloves (Syzygium aromaticum L. Merril et L.M. Perry), was evaluated by in vitro tests.
